Silent Samsung
Review of Samsung SpinPoint Hard drive 10.2 GB by
A.Smith
Advantages: Fast, Silent, Price
Disadvantages: Nothing
...There's not an awful lot to say about an hard drive really, but I'll try my best.
I've bought several hard drives in the past which were either Maxtor or Western Digital, unfortunately my Western Digital failed but all the Maxtor hard disks I've purchased are still going strong.
I bought an 80gb Samsung Spinpoint drive so I could use it with my Maxtor 60gb drive and use one for operating system and the other for games/files. When I turn on my computer you hear the Maxtor spin up is a high-pitch whirring sound but not a whisper from the Samsung, I have never known a hard disk to be as silent as the Samsung, you really cannot hear anything out of it.
I haven't done any benchmarks on the Samsung drive but I haven't had any problems with speed, everything seems to transfer as fast, if not faster, than it did with the Maxtor alone...

Spinning a Success...
Review of Samsung SpinPoint P120 SP2504C 250 GB by
Radical-Machine
Advantages: Very Quiet, Long-Lasting
Disadvantages: None!
...Here we are, a superb hard disk. Quiet, durable and fast. With a 7200rpm spin speed and its SATA interface, this drive is the perfect desktop hard disk.
I've now installed two of these in a RAID stripe, and they've always been fast and reliable.
However, that's all good and dandy and stuff, but many, many hard disks last a very long time, serving their computer impeccably year after year. What should make this one different?
At the end of the day, it's a manufacturer's average performance that allows you to spot a quality hard disk. For instance, I've purchased 4 Maxtor hard disks in my time, and 3 of them have failed all within the first year of operation. On the other hand, I've purchased 5 Samsung SpinPoint drives and they're all still going. The first was a 120GB ATA-133 jobby, which was bought 2 years ago. This remains...

One word - excellent!
Review of Samsung SpinPoint P80SD Hard drive 80 GB by
prosser13
Advantages: Fast, quiet, cheap
Disadvantages: None!
...After having problems with my Seagate 7200.7 200GB, I decided to replace it with a smaller drive just for Windows. I bought a Samsung Spinpoint 80GB in the sales and installed it.
Inital thoughts
The drive is well packed in a plastic case and a manual as well as a jumper to set SATA 150. The manual is two very small pages, with a couple of pictures and some writing. The manual guides you through how to make the hard drive SATA I compatible, how to install the drive and how to make your computer detect the hard drive. Its simple but everything is explained well - it could have a bit more explanation on why you may need to make the drive SATA I instead of SATAII.
Installation
I screwed the drive into my 3.5" bay, plugged in the SATA power and connection cable switched on my PC and put in the Windows disk - Windows setup...

A fast, quiet hard drive
Review of Samsung SpinPoint S250 HD250HJ 250 GB by
fatnickccash
Advantages: Fast, quiet, cheap
Disadvantages: Can get better value with bigger HDDs, may be too small for some
...The Samsung Spinpoint has, for the past year or so, been the hard drive of choice for those looking for good value. I needed a new hard drive recently, and I had no reservations whatsoever about getting this.
When it arrived, I installed it and was immediately impressed at how much quicker my computer felt to use. Perhaps this was mainly due to the reinstallation of Windows, but nevertheless the hard drive was performing better than my previous one (a Western Digital model), and it was quieter too. The SATA II interface allows for fast data transfer, and I could copy files about my series of folders with great speed. This model is only 250GB, and so is inevitably not quite as good value as the 500GB model (in terms of £/GB, where it sits at about £0.17/GB compared to £0.12/GB), but I cannot see myself using any more than what...

Raising the Bar, Not Just Your PC Speed!
Review of overclockers.co.uk by
Radical-Machine
Advantages: Lovely Site, Massive Product Range
Disadvantages: Shipping and Products often expensive!
...-up questions, the store should offer an apology and handle the exchange/repair sympathetically, doing so in a timely manner.
Now, that's alot to ask from an online retailer, who can't physically meet the customer, or vocally communicate (usually). How are you meant to feel "looked after" by a webpage?
Looking at Overclockers UK, I can show you how.
On loading the homepage, the website is well-balanced. The colours are distinct and matching, all the "latest products" are detailed in the middle, with large, clear pictures. Common categories are listed down the left and right, again with large, clear pictures fully representative of the particular category. A clearly visible, horizontal navigational menu at the top of page will take you to the main pages of the site. The other nice touch about the homepage is that the address and telephone...

This really is one of the bigguns!
Review of Maxtor MaXLine Plus II 200 GB by
chris_ah1
Advantages: Fast, huge capacity, reliable, well built, quiet, good compromise between speed and price
Disadvantages: Relatively expensive, not the biggest or fastest
...a rotating shaft, propelled by the hydronomic force being created by the lubricant which helps it rotate some more. This system's non-contact construction of the bearing makes it better than the previous fixed bearing technique. Thus, it improves quietness and reliability. Almost all modern hard disks that are labelled 'quiet' include this marchitecture. It is important enough though to warrant this section*****
Installation:
As with most hard disks available today, installation is very simple. However, with this drive you have to make sure that your motherboard and operating system supports 48-bit Long Bit Addressing. Simply, this means that hard disks are limited to approximately 120GB of space formatted unless the update is applied. If you have a relatively modern computer, and Windows XP SP1 all should be well. If you don't have it, maybe...

Good Fast RAM
Review of GeIL Ultra Series DDR2 DRAM 2 GB PC2-5400 by
tamss
Advantages: Very easy to install and Fast
Disadvantages: None
...The Geil Ultra Series DDR2 2GB is a great piece of kit for any PC gamer. It works amazingly in my set up consisting of Asus P5B Motherboard, Corsair HX 520w Modular Power Supply,Intel Core 2 Duo E6600, BFG 8800 GTS 320MB, Geil 2GB Ultra PC2-6400 RAM, 320GB Samsung Spinpoint and the Arctic Freezer 7 Pro.
<WHAT YOU GET>
A box, the RAM and a warning about Anti-Static.
<INSTALLATION>
Like most RAM the Geil Ultra Series is extremelly easy to install onto the motherboard simply align the pins and push down spreading the pressure evenly until the clips on either side pop in. When you first boot with this RAM in your system it will appear to be running at 5-5-5-15 timings to get it to run at 4-4-4-12 you will have to do a bit of tweaking in the BIOS if you want to know how just search for an Overclocking guide on google. One thing...

The (Very) Poor Man's SkyPlus!
Review of Nikkai Barebone Twin Tuner Freeview Digital TV Recorder by
BNibbles
Advantages: Cheap, given the wherewithal to finish it cheaply.
Disadvantages: Somewhat limited facilties. Crap manual
...- 7200 rpm compared to 5400 rpm.
It's important to read around the subject and buy one that's acknowledged to be quieter than the rest. Samsung Spinpoint disks spring to mind from my experience with another brand of PVR, which by some strange quirk of fate is exactly the make of spare drive I used.
Alternatively, seek out a disk drive that claims to be made for 'Consumer Electronics' i.e. in a PVR. These spin slower and whine less, but thanks to the fact that they don't do such stringent error checking, can still transfer data to and from the disk at a rate higher than is needed, therefore, you won't get any loss of continuity on recording or playback.
You're not so likely to find a 2nd hand one of these though.
Fitting the disk is easy. Make sure its little 'jumper' (a plastic tab at the business end) is in the right place...
