Sport - Pleasure Or Punishment
Review of General - Sport for Kids by
KarenUK
Advantages: beneficial to health, encourages discipline and team skills, enjoyment, fun
Disadvantages: disliked by some kids
...As a child, I loved P.E. - well, I did when it was gymnastics anyway! Gym was the love of my life for some fifteen years or so, I even named two of my children after famous gymnasts!
But when it was netball or tennis, I hated P.E. because I was pretty useless at those sports. But I was one of those weirdos who enjoyed cross-country running, yep, really!
I hated getting changed, putting on embarrassingly small shorts or impractical P.E. skirts and I hated going out into the cold, often running a mile or two in the snow, but the run itself was invigorating and it felt so good.
I think your view of P.E. or sport in general is biased, depending on your own sporting expertise as a child. But now as a mother, I am definitely in favour of children having compulsory P.E. lessons in school.
When children are babies and toddlers, we...

Children and Sport
Review of General - Sport for Kids by
LGTramp
Advantages: Children are healthier and happier
Disadvantages: None
...It is important that children find the success that makes them feel valued and wanted and success should not be measured in terms of 'winning'. To some, simply achieving a new skill is success. In fact, until someone tells them otherwise, most children do not see 'winning' as the primary aim and are more concerned with achieving skill development than beating others. It is therefore very important that parents and coaches do not set expectations and standards that are too high. Good coaches recognise the role they play in influencing confidence, self-esteem and the general behaviour of their young athletes and use a positive approach to build on strengths rather than weaknesses.
Generally children participate in sport because it is fun. Other reasons cited are to improve skill levels, get fit, belong to a community, gain recognition...

A Sporting Oracle
Review of news.bbc.co.uk/sports/ by
jonesri
Advantages: Good structure and variety of articles
Disadvantages: Slow Forums, Useless Posts
...Regular readers will know that I am a football fan, but it is not just football that I tend to follow. I like to keep a general interest in most sports, although it does tend to be football that I pay most attention to. Since I started working I have tended to spend some time at the start and end of the day checking on that latest sporting results and news, and BBC Sport has always been my first port of call.
** Background **
BBC Sport is the sport arm of the BBC Interactive service. The BBC website has several different sections covering many areas of interest including general news, radio, sport as well as local services such as weather, what’s on and travel news. The BBC is funded by the television license fee and so is free from advertising. Being funded by the people it is required to provide entertainment and information...

Girls should be able to play any sport
Review of Sport in General by
sam123
Advantages: -
Disadvantages: -
...At High school I participated in a lot of different sports, and netball was one of them, being a girl, it was the one we had to take part in. I would have much preferred an option but we would have the choice of the feminine sports like gymnastics, hockey and netball and not football.
I think girls should be given the choice to do whatever sports they want and not forced to just do some sports traditionally seen as girlie sports. For instance rounders, is a sport with similarities to baseball but it’s seen as a girl sport. I think boys would like to play the sport but in summer time in our school the boys would play cricket whilst the girls would play rounders.
Some girls are happy with doing ‘girlie’ sports but some are restricted to doing sports chosen by their teacher. Some girls play football...

Top 10 Sporting Moments
Review of Sport in General by
41ggo
Advantages: Sport
Disadvantages: Aussies
...Sports fans listen up. The Guru of sport is about to announce the official top 10 sporting moments ever. Nah im just kidding, im not really a sporting guru, though, my body is a temple!! Anyway..
10. England beat West Germany 4-2 in the final of the 1966 world cup. After going 1-0 down within the first 15 minutes, Geoff Hurst leveled it out 5 minutes later. In the 77th minute, we were ahead by a goal from Martin Peters, however in the last minute of added time Germany equalized. Boo. Then during E.T, Geoff Hurst whipped in 2 more goals to make England World Cup winners.
9. Michael Schumacher wins 7 world championships in 2004. He won a record 12/ 13 races in the 2004 season, only to be eclipsed by magnificent upcomers, the likes of Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen.
8. Yesterday, Usain Bolt broke the 100 metres world record...

Not just sports
Review of Sport in General by
shaoli2
Advantages: see the opinion
Disadvantages: no one
...of Shaolin, and it isn't just a sport.
When you train Shaolin mon, you train basically three different arts: Thai chi, Qi qung and Shaolin mon.
With Qi qung you learn the right breathing, with Thai chi you learn how to use this particular way of breathing when you have to move, and with Shaolin mon you learn haw to fight.
Judo and Shaolin mon are diffrent as the sky and the earth: judo is a sport (a complete one, a beautiful one, but just a sport), while Shaolin mon is the 'way of knowledge' (that's also one of the possible translations of the name itself), something that involves not only your body, but also your mind.
But, both of them requires the same things, and teach basically the same things.
The first thing that you can learn training a martial art is humility. Humility let you understand, and teach you how to behave...

My best investment-by a sports shop assistant.
Review of Sport in General by
RuthHolohan
Advantages: Hardwearing
Disadvantages: Expensive
...I'll admit it now before I start, I'm a trainer sales-person. Yes, thats my job and I'm writing to tell you how great a pair of trainers are. I guess you might say thats a bit dodgy of me and I'm just trying to get you all to go out and buy a load of over-priced rubbish but NO! don't think about it that way. See, I spend 40 hours a week testing out the newest and trendiest sports gear when I really should be selling it and I'm going to write about a pair of trainers I bought back in 1996 that I'm still wearing.
Nike Air Max Classic Leather. Currently retailing at £84.99 and a terrible rip off as i'm told several times a day by the irate parents of stroppy 15 year olds who just won't wear anything else. Don't listen to them - these babies are the best pair of shoes I've ever bought. And I've bought a hell of a lot of trainers...

Forget Celery, get on the Wii Sports diet!
Review of Wii Sports (Wii) by
ratkid132
Advantages: Exercising or relaxing, whatever you want it to be
Disadvantages: Unrealistic drawing style (not that that matters to me!)
....
~~~ Other Game Modes ~~~
As well as simply playing the sport "as God intended", there are various different game modes. Wii fitness, a game mode that pits you against randomly selected challenges, tests your stamina, strength, and speed to work out your "Wii fitness age". This can be no lower than 20 however, so don't be worried if your kids are coming out at 30! I myself came out at 47 the first time I played Wii fitness. You can only play Fitness once a day to stop you tiring yourself out. If the idea if this interests you, you'll also be pleased to know there is a 2 month graph that monitors your fitness age day to day and plots it appropriately.
The other game mode, Wii Training, is a set of 3 game modes for each sport, designed to train you at that sport and by focusing on one aspect, get you better at the sport in general. Essentialy...
Sports Waste
Review of Sports Soccer (Shop) by
Nathan_Innit
Advantages: Cheap prices and large stores
Disadvantages: Generally ugly clothes
...with their purchases. To me there is nothing in their selection that I like currently, although one good thing I can say about this area of the shop is that they seem to keep this side of the store well staffed. There's usually always someone there to serve you, but with the trainers being more expensive than the clothes I'm not surprised that they want to get your business more on that side of the store. Having said that, the trainers are still quite cheap.
Upstairs is the more specified area, and it's generally well organised, although except for the till staff there is no one up there. It offers replica football tops, sporting equiptment, golf clubs, etc. Also the womens range is upstairs, even putting on fluffy boots that were all the rage when I last went up there looking around for some reason. Still don't expect anything upstairs to jump out...
