...A brilliant collection of Nick Hornby's 'Stuff I've Been Reading' magazine columns from 'The Believer' literary magazine, run by an ever-shifting, white-robed, omniscient, evangelical group of people nicknamed 'The Polysyllabic Spree'. There is only one rule: no negative comments on sensitive living authors, so anything he hates has to remain unnamed... Each month Hornby starts his column with two lists - 'Books bought' and 'Books read' - then proceeds to guide the reader through his choices. But this is no ordinary review column. Each month he dives into the very essence of reading - what guides us to pick up one book and not another? Why is there such a void between the literary snobs and real readers? How can one book lead us to the next, and why do some books leap out at us in a shop but never get read once they're back home...

Never Look At The Sun

Advantages: They're at least trying, bless 'em
Disadvantages: It's a poor album. How's that for a disadvantage?

...Before you listen to The Polyphonic Spree, all the signs have been universally bad. They call themselves a "choral symphonic rock" band who are run by a "musical director" called Tim, and they wear bright robes of different colours as they travel round the World - presumably in a series of VW Beetles painted all the colours of the rainbow - spreading their good word about how nice the sun is. Looking at the tracklisting for their debut album "The Beginning Stages Of The Polyphonic Spree" (a name which is of course another pre-emptive strike against them), the word 'day' appears seven times out of ten, and 'sun' appears on two. The only songs to avoid either word are "Soldier Girl", which could be promising, and "Lala", which? is not such a promising title. So before you listen to the album, there are already several ominous overtones...

I went on a mad murderous killing spree

Advantages: Reusable, no chemicals, great for spot checks
Disadvantages: takes time to reach a complete annihalation

Anytime the comb comes across a beastie the buzz will stop and at this point you need to lift the comb away from the hair and clean out between the teeth to remove the dead body\bodies. I don't mean to be gross and fair enough it was my husband who went on the killing spree but there was a great sense of satisfaction seeing all the little black dots on the kitchen roll. He did No.1 and No. 2 son in less than five minutes each. As the zapper only kills the living lice we (the royal we of course cos hubby always did it) ran the comb through the hair every night for two weeks just too be sure. There are also stores where all on this lane cost this much, all of the other lane cost that much. There are also some stalls selling jades. Saxo spree 1.0L

Advantages: Nippy around town, fuel economy, decent starter car

...I have had my saxo spree 4, 1.0L for about 8 months now and it is a good little runner, it is nippy around town and handles well, even if the steering can be a little heavy round corners sometimes. The petrol consumption is ok, it does about 48 miles to the gallon for me, but im not always light on the accelerator, so this is fairly good. The car is quick from 0-50 (well quick for a 1.0) but above this it takes its time...0-50 takes about ten seconds but then getting to 60 takes an extra 5 seconds in mine, because of the change to third gear...also if you want to get above 70 at all...dont put a body kit on it and do out all the sound system as i have done because this added loads of weight to the car, which is probably why mine take 15.64 seconds to get to 60. The most i have got out of my car is 85mph and this was pushing it, could...
