Garlic for free (well almost).
Advantages: Cheap and easy to grow
Disadvantages: Smelly breath
...defect will be passed on and possibly amplified with each generation so it is wise, each year, to start with an unrelated 'parent' clove. It is possible to buy cloves for growing in garden centres but I have never had any problems with using those found in the supermarket. My personal preference is to use organically grown cloves.
Garlic does like to grow in a sunny spot in order to produce a good sized bulb. It can be planted at two different times of the year, late autumn and/or spring. My first row is usually planted early October and already at the time of writing (beginning of February) the first shoots are about 10" high. I would usually expect them to be about 6" but with the exceptionally mild winter so far they have seem to have shot up. Planting cannot be simpler. Garlic doesn't need particularly rich growing soil but it...

Hmm Roasted Garlic
Advantages: Very good for your health
Disadvantages: Bad breath
...of the season.
Plant garlic in the first month of spring, with the pointed end up into holes about an inch deep and plant 6 inches apart, feed with a good liquid fertilizer and keep well watered. You can also plant garlic in the autumn but it will need protecting it the temperature drops below 5oF.
Hopefully by the end of the summer they will be well matured, a good sign is the top growth will start to change colour and will fall over. Tying the stems in a knot is said to increase the size of the clove. Ease the bulbs out of the ground once the leaves lose there greenness, and leave to dry in the sun for a few days if you can or bring indoors if there is rain forecast. Hang them up and place somewhere cool and dry.
Garlic can be planted in containers, it's also a very good companion plant for roses to help ward of black spot.

A Spring Experience
Advantages: All the staff are very friendly and professional
Disadvantages: It is quite expensive
...A place where the England Football Team come back time and time again to be pampered, a place that celebrities are often seen relaxing in. So when I felt last week very stressed and in need of 24hrs complete relaxation I couldn?t think of a better place to go. I had never been to Champneys Springs before and so was very excited as to what it would be like and wondering whether I might bump into a celebrity on my stay there. The resort is situated out in the countryside of Ashby de la Zouch in Leicestershire.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS
On entering the resort I felt like I had been transported into another world. A world away from problems, a very care free environment full of smiling faces and pleasant surroundings. I instantly felt a sense of calm floating around me. The reception area looked very lush and had several relaxing abstract...

Garlic - Bad Smell of Success
Advantages: Seems to alleviate a host of ailments.
Disadvantages: Causes odour, some may be intolerant to it.
...Much seems to have been written about garlic being good for the heart, cholesterol, circulation and a host of other conditions, but I thought I would add my "two-pence-worth" based on my experience of this pungent little herb.
To begin with, I must say that I have never found any benefit in taking garlic supplements, whether or not they were of the odourless variety. But I definitely have found fresh garlic bulbs to make a difference to the state of my health.
Before I go any further, I would like to advise readers with medical conditions to always visit their doctor to get a proper diagnosis and only self-medicate with the appropriate medical approval. Some people have also been found to be intolerant to garlic and experienced contact dermatitis on the skin and migraine headaches. I am no expert and what follows is...

Garlic, not boring but nice.
Advantages: Versatile.
Disadvantages: Most people hate the smell
...and gives the bulbs plenty of air.
Any with a thick, green stalk need using right away, as they won't keep.
Remember those little cloves you kept back from planting? Save them until spring and then pot them into some gritty compost. Put out in the sun and keep watering well. Cut finger length shoots and use them in stir-fries. More shoots will grow so you can have more another day.
In the kitchen you can use it in all your usual recipes, but why stop there?
Try roasting whole cloves with potatoes, red onions and red peppers. Sprinkle with olive oil and fresh thyme. Roast for an hour and serve with grilled chicken breasts.
Roast big tomatoes, halved, with olive oil thyme and whole garlic cloves. Puree this if you can resist eating it from the roasting dish.
Fill a bottle (sterilised first) with olive oil and drop in a few cloves...

How to Grow Garlic
Advantages: Really very easy to grow, and a fun project for kids.
Disadvantages: Not many, some people don't like the odor.
..."If everybody ate garlic,
Then nobody would find it objectionable."
French Peasant–Unknown
Did you know garlic is classified as an herb? My dictionary defines an herb as "A plant or plant part valued for its medicinal, savory, or aromatic properties." So, garlic, and many other plants are really herbs! Whatever you call it, garlic is an incredibly popular flavoring for all sorts of dishes. Growing garlic is really very easy. If you love "the stinking rose," you'll love growing your own fresh garlic!
Where to Plant Your Garlic
Garlic loves a rich, very well-drained soil. It's a perennial (which means the plant doesn't die over the winter, and will return in the spring), but in most climates, it is treated like an annual. (Which means it's grown anew every year.) Garlic can be grown from seed, but most people plant...

Put a Spring in your step
Advantages: Plenty of things to do at various levels
Disadvantages: Expensive
...As part of my friend’s 40th birthday celebrations I spent the day at Springs Health Farm with her, so I thought I would tell you all about it.
Springs is just south of Ashby de la Zouch near to Measham and junction 12 of the M42/A42.
There were quite a group of people who wanted to go, some stayed for the weekend (£209.95), some just stayed overnight on Saturday (£99.95) and three of us just went for the day on Saturday.
We chose the ‘Springs Day’ costing £74.95 payable when we booked last September. This included an introduction and coffee on arrival at 9am, a buffet lunch, a full body massage, a facial and unlimited use of all the facilities until departure at 6pm.
We arrived at 9am and were shown to the locker room where we could store our bags during the day. These were operated by a £1 coin, which was...

Be Smart! With Smart Price Garlic Bread.
Advantages: Very reasonable in price, easy to cook.
Disadvantages: Could have been stronger inn flavour
...Review of Asda Smart Price Garlic Bread.
The Product
This review covers garlic bread from the Asda economy budget range, known as Smart Price. Along with many other supermarkets budget lines, Asda's Smart Price is a range of lower priced, simply packaged basic items. As I am restricted to a tight budget nowadays, I have been buying more and more products from supermarket own ranges.
All my family enjoy garlic bread, we tend to eat it with a wide assortment of meals, my own favourite is a bowl of home made vegetarian pasta and a couple of slices of garlic bread...Yum!
Asda's Smart Price garlic bread is a baguette shaped white loaf filled with garlic butter.
Packaging
The 170g frozen garlic baguette comes in the instantly recognisable Asda Smart Price uniform of a basic green and white packaging. The product description...

Budget Garlic bread, great value
Advantages: -
Disadvantages: -
...Garlic Bread is one of my favourite accompaniments to pasta , pizza, or salad . I've been trying to economise, which mainly means that instead of buying Asda own brand, I'm trying, where I can to step down to the smartprice brand - the cheapest they offer- in order to make my money go further .
This frozen baguette cost me 36p, which, considering Asda do a 2 pack of their own brand for 98p, would save me 26 pence if I purchased two - not a huge saving, but a saving none the less . Its roughly the same size too, although perhaps slightly less plump, and is divided into nine slices (7 real slices, and 2 ends )
The packaging, like most of the Smart Price products, is a plain white with green writing - nothing to write home about, but it does make it easy to find the smart price items amongst all the others .
Cooking this is simple...

DIY Garlic
Advantages: Easy and undemanding
Disadvantages: Don't overwater or underwater!
...Garlic is easily grown from individual cloves, just like onions or shallots. You don't even need a windowbox, never mind a garden, for it will grow in a pot on a sunny windowsill.
However, beware using garlic from the supermarket shelf - most commercially grown garlic is treated with growth-regulating chemicals which will inhibit re-growth (although you may be lucky!).
Best to buy garlic as sets from the garden centre or one of the many good seed catalogues. But if you really want to do your own thing with the supermarket stuff, buy organic garlic and try growing that. It should be untreated and theoretically pure as the driven snow....
