...Having recently upgraded to WIndows XP Home edition from Windows 98, I was very unhappy about the way much of my software now wont work.
Many of my daughters edcational games just will not run under it, or do not run correctly; even with the relevant compatibility options checked.
It is extremely bad at running dos based programs, espescially those older games that use extended memory handling or screen handling software (Most of my SSI dos based games are now just coaster material).
Additionally some recent Windows based games will not play, and the response from games manufacturers is poor. I had the original version of Railroad Tycoon 2. When I tried to run it it advised me that the game would not run under NT!! I contacted the makers who basically told me to go away, and Microsoft were totally unhelpful (Unless paid a lot...

I have used them myself now to host quite a few sites and have always found them to be pretty good. Granted my sites are not major players attracting thousands of hits each week, but none the less I have experienced very little downtime over the past four years of using them. On the few occasions I have felt the need to contact their support team I have found them to be responsive and helpful in resolving my problems. I have never personally experienced unauthorised charges to my account. One of the main reason I chose Streamline initially was the package on offer for the price was extremely competetive, and included upto 10 sub domains and more importantly SSI which I was keen to use. ...SSI failed to meet really excting story and the game attractivity has fallen. Previous one was of course bugfull, and on Win95 and Win98 was melting down with "internal error" many time after 20 years of play-time.
But the story and representation of maps were much better. Now you can't make your own in notepad, or just change some name to your favorite.
Great nations now are unable to remove boycott on the enemy, but with Imperialism technology.
Technology gets all fine marks, money-deductive tree, and now you can only inest in technology, what is really true for 15-16th centures.Graphics hasn't changed a lot. The system of roads is much better than rail depots in IMPERIALISM I, now good are to transported on well equiped roads. But the story that there is no gold or diamonds in the Old World is unreal.

Advantages: FREE!!! CGI scripting, SSI, E-mail forwarding to multiple addresses, FREE!! Disadvantages: 15 meg max limit, 100 meg per month bandwith limit, not for the greener among us.
...Portland offer free hosting for webpages. Excellent, so do many other places, but portland also offer Perl CGI, PHP, SSI and E-mail forwarding to multiple addresses. I honestly cannot think of any other placxe that gives you so much for so little. Portland do not even force you to have a nasty pop up advert to claw a few pence back on thier outlay.
After purchasing a domain name from your-name-here.co.uk and having very little joy with them with regards to web hosting, I decided to change servers to Portland, and have not looked back since.
The service can be a little patchy at times, and logging onto FTP does sometimes take a few attempts, but the service gets better and better every week, and besides, its free, so who am I to complain.
