Reviews of st george's
St George The Patron Saint of Sainsburys
Review of Young's St. Georges Ale by
peppermint
Advantages: It's by possibly the best overall brewery around, it's relatively cheap
Disadvantages: It's a mix of better Youngs beers, and the sum of the parts don;t make the whole, it's also exclusive to Sainsbury's, which means a 14 mile drive for me!
...St George – patron saint of England. Symbol of English spirit, bravery in the face of adversity, stiff upper lip. What better personification of this great land to choose for a thoroughly English ale? And so we have Young’s St George’s. Never heard of it? No, well neither have I!
Having seen this ale mentioned in the hallowed lists of ciao, I felt pangs of guilt that I hadn’t even heard of this ale. Even worse was that it was brewed by the fair hands of Young’s, whose Double Chocolate Stout, London Ale, Waggle Dance and Old Nick all feature regularly in my beer cupboard restocking (yes, I do have a cupboard just for beer!) The shame of it. Would people point and whisper behind my back if they knew I hadn’t heard of this ale? Would ciao members in their hundreds turn their backs on my ops, even those loyal few who know of my addictions...

worst hotel complex in malta,St Georges Hotel
Review of St. Georges Park Complex, Saint Julian's by
babajack
Advantages: ?????
Disadvantages: food, noise, rooms, swimming pools, position in fact everything
...Our last minute "allocated on arrival" holiday was cheap. The courier told us that the St Georges Park Hotel was in a lively part of town, with easy access to the whole of the island.
The entrance to the hotel was impressive but not grand, and the tired 1960s foyer suggested to us what the rest of the hotel was like. We slowly, as the lift only had two speeds (extremely slow and stop), rose to the eighth floor and trundled our luggage along the dark and dismal corridor to our apartment. I use the term advisedly because the room was fairly grim. Its cold tiled floor housed two single beds that would not have been out of place in a local homeless centre's dormitory. They were covered with bedding that I think must have been purchased when the hotel was built. It was clean but extremely thin and in need of replacement. There was a TV...

St Georges, the University of London (SGUL)
Review of London University St George's Hospital Medical School by
Rohan01
Advantages: probably best teaching in london and certainly best value med school in london
Disadvantages: still expensive compared to outside london, lack of multifacet uni, budget in recent years
...like Imperial and UCL to me is a huge gain in ents spending power. I dont think I would be able to cope without this freedom to spend if I was studying up in the city.
Teaching in my experience is variable but generally good. This is pretty much true of all the places I've studied, so no gain there.
The research factor is good but thats isnt really relevant to an MBBS, biomed, nurse or physio student, who will use research facilities in about 0.1 % of their time.
One negative is halls, which are very poor but are to be updated soon. Another possible problem lies in funding (see the press about George's being in the red), which has affected some aspects of the university recently, but with luck wouldnt really affect you. It might explain the lack of societies there , but lets be honest, theres more than enough to keep you busy...

In search of haunted St. Augustine
Review of St. Augustine by
ajfoster
Advantages: Lots of ghosts, steeped with history, lizards, has more character than Orlando
Disadvantages: Why is it there is never enough time to see everything?
...to miss the many choices available in St. Augustine. With nine different companies providing them, ghost tours are a thriving industry in the Oldest City. They aren't limited to walking, either. Some of the other transport options included horse and buggy rides, sailing, hearses, limosines, and buses. As Russell and I walked down St. George Street around 7:30 p.m., guides wearing black or historical costume lined the street like hookers looking for johns. "Looking for a good time tonight?"
Following is a list of the attractions I personally visited and are accessible to the public in some venue or another; however, I'll start with a general tip:
RED TRAIN TOURS
There are no ghosts on these trams, to my knowledge, but they can take punters to St. Augustine's most famous haunted sites. This is a step on-step off train tour...

St. Paul's: "The Little Chapel That Stood"
Review of St Paul´s Chapel, New York by
BawBaw
Advantages: Inspiration for humanitarian conduct
Disadvantages: The ongoing pain of loss
...a time of tragedy.
History and Architecture
Before 9-11, St. Paul's was already imbued with an impressive history. George Washington worshiped there during the 2 years that the port city of New York served as the Nation's capital, as did George Clinton, the State of New York's first governor. The two Georges had pews on opposite sides of the sanctuary, which means that modern visitors will find the Great Seal of the United States and the Coat of Arms of the State of New York facing each other from opposite walls of the chapel. Other presidents and dignitaries who have worshiped there include Britain's King William IV, who served as an officer in the Royal Navy during the American Revolution; Lords Cornwallis and Howe, who lead British forces against the American rebels; and Presidents Grover...

Cry God for England, Harry and St George
Review of Bombardier Premium Beer by
Newfloridian
Advantages: It's English, It's Imperial, It's Premium
Disadvantages: The Safeway special might not last long.
...I don’t know whether it has struck you but we have been surrounded over these last few days by an increased interest in St George and a controversy over who should be the patron Saint of England (The BBC Today programme has even suggested a move to St Thomas A’Becket.). St George’s Day of course is April 23rd. There have been suggestions that it should be moved to a Monday and made the subject of an extra Bank Holiday. There are societies who propose increasing St George fever in the same way that the other countries fete Sts. David, Patrick and Andrew.
I have pursued this preamble to introduce a very English brew from a brewery that has been doing its own bit to further the cause. The Brewery also says: “We think it's about time St. George's Day (April 23rd) got the recognition it deserves, and that's why, with your support, we...

A SUITABLE RESTING PLACE FOR St ALBAN
Review of St Albans Cathedral, England by
RICHADA
Advantages: Antiquity, Architecture, Free Entry, Guides, History.
Disadvantages: None Found
...original North Transept is anyone's guess. However, in a sense it represents the rise from the near ashes of St Albans Cathedral.
Various wealthy and in some cases well known benefactors have left their mark here at St Albans. Without them, this large church would never have been restored. The most notable was Sir George Gilbert Scott - architect of St Pancras Station and the Albert Memorial in London - son of a clergyman; most of his working life was spent restoring cathedrals. Sadly, he died in 1871 before completing the works at St Albans.
In his footsteps followed the wealthy and well meaning Lord Grimthorpe, who was an amateur architect, regrettably he had neither the skill or experience of Scott. Grimthorpe had little feeling for historical architecture and inflicted much damage - 'acts of vandalism' as Archdeacon Grant described...

St Trinian girls v Great Train Robbers
Review of The Great St Trinian's Train Robbery DVD by
MAFARRIMOND
Advantages: Flash Harry, good family fun
Disadvantages: Not as good as previous films
...with recurring themes full of wit and humour. The main theme is suggestive of school assembly played on the piano in a duet. Best of all is the memorable shady theme for the spivcharacter played by George Cole. The school song is a battle song, St Trinians, StTrinians, Our battle cry, St Trinians, StTrinians, Willnever die.
The Trains
The ftrain chase was shot exclusively on the Longmoor Military. A variety of steam locomotives an early Southern diesel multiple unit, an 0-6-0 diesel shunter (switcher) and a track inspection trolley all feature. Its good fun, the trains are real trains.
The Cost and Availability
The film is available on VHS Tape, published on 18th August 1997 by Warner Home Video and retails at approximately £5.99.
A two-DVD set of all four St Trinains films are available on DVD, realeased on 3rd November 2003 by Warner...

You, Me & George
Review of George Wimpey Homes by
robert_parnham
Advantages: Build Quality, Price, Discount & Service
Disadvantages: Poor Base Specification - Options Could be Better
...The concept of reviewing things is a sound one, tell people your thoughts (good or bad) about products or services you use or buy - anything from a tea bag to a hotel room. Well, this time I'm returning to Ciao to write a review of our most expensive ever purchase. I'm talking brick and motor. I'm talking a quarter of a million pound's worth of brand-spanking-new George Wimpy real-estate.
Be warned, there's so much to tell you this is a really long review - but there's a gold star in it for anyone who makes it to the end!
WHERE IT ALL STARTED
The post Christmas blues seemed to appear this year about the 1st December (26 days earlier than normal!) and I just wasn't happy. I needed something new to focus on, my feet were getting itchy and the guttering needed replacing. So the logical thing to do is move house...

By George!
Review of George Square (Glasgow) by
drewboy
Advantages: Usually something going on, Great meeting point, Christmas
Disadvantages: None unless you hate red tarmac!
...In most towns and cities you find that right in the middle you have a square of some description. In New York there is Time Square, In Venice there is the Piazza San Marco, in Moscow there is Red Square and in Beijing there is Tiananmen Square. These places are traditionally found in the centre of the city or town and are generally where you will find that the people will gather for various activities such as demonstrations, events, shows of solidarity and New Year celebrations. Here in good old ‘Glesga’, we have George Square.
The square was originally laid out in 1781 on what was then a marsh. Gradually, it was built around until eventually it became the centre of a bustling city which did very well in the industrial revolution and traded heavily in fabrics, tobacco and shipbuilding. Through the years the Square has evolved...
