A SUITABLE RESTING PLACE FOR St ALBAN
Advantages: Antiquity, Architecture, Free Entry, Guides, History.
Disadvantages: None Found
...tonnes of the very hard Roman bricks from the ruined city with the intention of building a church worthy of St Albans stature.
Before any brick construction had started on the site, the Normans had invaded, and in order to stamp their authority and superiority on the Saxon abbots they planned and started to erect, in 1077, a large Norman church. The design was that of the first Norman abbot, Paul of Caen, the builder his master mason Robert.
St Alban was very well known in France, many churches there had already been dedicated to him. With this being the site of his martyrdom, Paul of Caen had the full backing of the Archbishop of Canterbury, using a largely Saxon workforce, he built his abbey church - at the time of its dedication in 1115 it was, unsurprisingly, the largest church in England.

St. Paul's: "The Little Chapel That Stood"
Advantages: Inspiration for humanitarian conduct
Disadvantages: The ongoing pain of loss
...Introduction
The manmade landscape of Lower Manhattan consists of a wondrously eclectic assemblage of intriguing structures. In the midst of this landscape, a carefully roving eye will detect an unnatural hole--unnatural, in that it is devoid of a skyline. That hole, of course, is the space where the World Trade Center once stood and where a kind of frenzied, reverent construction process is now the order of the day.
Just a few hundred yards away--indeed, right across the street--is another Manhattan anomaly, St. Paul's Chapel. As one of the few remaining colonial structures in Lower Manhattan, it is the area's oldest continuously used public building, not to mention its only remaining colonial church, St. Paul's is an exceedingly rare reminder that this corner of Manhattan Island was once...

Sheffield's Other Cathedral.
Advantages: Beautifully Decorated
Disadvantages: Quite Difficult To Find
...I am not a religious person and never have been but the sudden death of my partner recently made me pay a visit to the Church of St. Marie's in the centre of Sheffield.
The Church of St Marie's is the Catholic Cathedral within the city, and one of two Cathedrals within Sheffield, the other being the nearby Anglican Cathedral.
I did not visit this place for religious purposes, but to simply light a candle for my loved one. My partner, though Roman Catholic by Religion was not by any means a practising Catholic, and if truth be known he had struggled in the past with some of the aspects of his faith, including his Sexuality, but it had been a place where he had found some solace during a few low moments of his life over the years.
THE LOCATION
Unlike the Anglican Cathedral which dominates the centre of the city, the Church...

St Paul's Bay - excellent value for money
Advantages: Cheap, easy to get around, hassle free.
Disadvantages: The time share people, although we were only hounded twice.
...I booked a holiday for my husband, my mum and myself at the San Anton hotel in St Paul's Bay. The San Anton is a nice, basic hotel offering self catering or all inclusive. It's ideal for families as there is organised entertainment for both children and adults throughout the day. This was ideal for us as my mum can't walk very well and is often too tired to venture out of the hotel. There was a 5 minute walk to the nearest bus stop from the hotel so it wasn't difficult to find our way round the island on the local buses. Every thing I'd read about the local buses prior to arriving in Malta suggested they were falling to bits and were incredibly uncomfortable, however, I didn't find them any worse than the average bus at home in Glasgow, and at 80 pence, approximately, for the longest journey they offer much better value.

An Icy Cathedral
Advantages: Interesting place of worship
Disadvantages: Gets busy
...The Arctic cathedral in Tromsø stood out amongst the smaller houses surrounding it and was visible long before we approached the bridge to cross over to the mainland. The unusual shape representing the shape of a Sami (the people who tend the reindeer) tent and the iciness of a glacier was built in 1965 on a site that was originally a bunker, being close to Russia they were prepared. The huge white walls form an A shape and there are windows at both ends of the building. The walls are 11 pieces of concrete covered with Aluminium, which represent the 11 apostles left after the betrayal of Christ. Between the wall sections is glass which lets light into the church, supplying much of the inside light in the church, especially during the midnight sun season.
With the mountain behind covered in trees it stood out well, but when the snow...

Canterbury Cathedral
Advantages: Historical benefits, good attraction for all the family to learn about
Disadvantages: Mnay steps to climb.Apart form that none
...Well as my Dover castle review seemed to go down rather well with ratings received, and this is a rather local attraction to me, I thought I would do a review won Canterbury cathedral.
I can view this beautifully from my office window on my construction site, which I think is a privilege really.
History of the Cathedral
Well I should think most people know something about the cathedral and its history but I will merely scratch the surface of it in this review im sure?
The Cathedral was founded in 597AD by St Augustine who landed on the south east corner of England as a missionary from Rome.
St Augustine was given a site in Canterbury to set up his church and this was St Martins, which still stands today.
This was given to him by the then King of England Ethelbert. This Church was used throughout the Roman occupation and in...

Bradford Cathedral
Advantages: Lots of history
Disadvantages: The roof and chairs are very odd
....
For most of its long life Bradford's Cathedral was the Parish Church of St Peter. It stands on Stott Hill in an elevated position overlooking the city below. It seemed surprising at first that it could be hidden from view when you are at street level but when you examine it carefully you will note that its main tower is quite short. This tower is also square, that is to say that there is no steeple so despite its location it is less prominent than many Cathedrals in other cities that I have visited.
A fancy archway on the street marks the entrance to the Cathedral but again this is somewhat misleading. At the top of the steps I had expected to find myself inside the building so I had turned off my mobile phone in preparation yet when I reached the top of the stone steps instead I myself on the edge of a lovely landscaped garden...

Cathedral
Advantages: Good
Disadvantages: None
...One of the great buildings of the world and it is the largest cathedral in Britain and 5th largest in the world. The cathedral has high gothic arches and bells in the tower. The construction of the cathedral was designed by Giles Gilbert Scott. Car Parking is available at the Cathedral, with a charge of Ģ1. Multi stormy car parking is available nearer the city centre in Mount Pleasant and in neighboring Duke Street. There is some limited free street parking available. Entry to the cathedral is free of charge, but donations are invited - Ģ3.00 (?4/$5US) is suggested. Prices for the Tower are Ģ4.25 with concessions at Ģ2.50. A family ticket for up to 2 adults and 3 children is Ģ10.00.
A visit is highly recommended....

WORTH A VISIT
Advantages: See Opinion
Disadvantages: See opinion
...St Paul`s Cathedral is one of London`s most awe-inspiring sights. Its dome is the third largest in the world and its graceful bulk is an important feature of the City skyline.
The building also manages to communicate a sense of serenity, most notably in the famous of the dome untouched but wreathed in the smoke and flames of the blitz.
Wren`s original design for rebuilding St Paul`s was based on High Renaissance ideas, but it was considored too Italiante and too modern ~ the clergy of St Pauls wanted a traditional sanctuary rather than Wren`s Greek cross design.Wren adapted the plans, but kept the dome which gives the cathedral such a wonderfully uplifting atmosphere.
On entering the church it is natural to head for the crossing beneath the dome, through whose windows a strangely ambiguous golden light is filtered. In the pavement...

The Light of the World
Advantages: Beauty, peace, awe inspiring.
Disadvantages: None
...I visited this wonderful place many years ago when I was about 7 years old and my dad and I climbed up as far as the famous Whispering Gallery. We did not go right up to the top as mom was waiting for us at ground level – she’s not too good with climbs and heights! I had always wanted to return to complete the climb but had never got round to it until recently.
I had made a list of all the things that I wanted to do during my lifetime and one of these was to climb to the very top of St Paul’s Cathedral. A friend of mine lives in London and I went to stay with him for a weekend so that I could get to a work seminar near Tower Bridge early on Monday morning. As a surprise he took me on a trip to St Paul’s Cathedral and climbed with me to the top, even though he’s not very keen on heights either!
St Paul...
