A Careful Choice

...I am a keen amateur photographer with a special interest in wildlife photography. I purchased the Cannon 70-300mm Image Stabiliser as the most active time for this wildlife photography is either early morning or late evening when the light tends to be less than ideal. The lens itself is very heavy in comparison to similar 'non-image stabiliser' style lenses and this needs to be taken into account when considering the total weight of camera equipment that you will be carrying around, especially if you are carrying it around rough terrain. As a standard lens with the image stabiliser turned off the lens functions as well, the optical quality is similar if not better than the standard 70-300mm lens and the results are pleasing. ...I bought this camera from marks and spencers for £279.99. This camera is great due to all the features that it has. It has a great 12x optical zoom, which even at 9x or 10x zoom, the pictures look quite clear and well taken photos. It has a good image stabilisation feature which allows you to take photos even if the object of person is moving very fast. Its battery life is quite good compared to most ordinary cameras which allows you to take 250 photos on average. It is a 10.1 megapixel camera which has a very high number of pixels for each picture, and I can say this is definitely so when I upload my pictures onto my laptop as the pictures are VERY clear and they still look good when zoomed in by half the size of the picture....

I took a picture of the crescent moon (hand held) the other night at 1/8th sec at full telephoto and it was in focus with no evidence of shake. ...This is not a review, but a comment on the shortcomings of investing in this Canon system. Given the superb performance of the CMOS image sensor, particularly at high sensitivity settings, the lenses offered by Canon as 'kit' lenses are somewhat of a let-down and disappointment for the following reasons: The camera body does not have image stabilisation. If you wish to have this facility each lens you buy has to have it built in. This makes the lenses inherently more expensive than similar ones without image stabilisation. The 'kit' lenses (18-55 and 55-250) are not internal focus, therefore the filter thread rotates when you change focus, making the use of polarising filters difficult.
