Staged brilliance, enough said.
Review of Stage (Live/Remastered) [Digipak] - David Bowie by
No_name
Advantages: Bowie at his absolute brilliant best with a band and music to kill for!
Disadvantages: Practically nothing whatsoever...
...the difference. Bowie is in fine form vocally, as evident from "Heroes" but Belew's presence throughout the album is absolutely pivotal, he gives the music a potency that Bowie's other guitarist can't quite provide.
The first CD of Stage, with the exception of Fame, consists entirely of tracks from Low and Heroes. We're treated to the syncopated funkiness of What in the World and downright disturbing lyrics of Breaking Glass, both of which are played with a solid grace, especially Belew's energetic, nigh psychotic guitar work but it has some superb, near sublime moments. The always fun (I always think of it like some strange art-pop cockney knees up - I assume you, it makes sense) Be my Wife is one of the absolute highlights of the album, regardless of CD. From the playful east-end piano introduction to Bowie's kinda-matter-of-fact vocals...

Art!?! - Me. NEVER!!
Review of Ferens Art Gallery (Hull) by
kerryzach
Advantages: free, quite interesting
Disadvantages: not well known
..., Maritime Art, Paintings, Photography, Prints, Sculpture, Video art all grace the stage at Ferens.
Highlights include masterpieces by Frans Hals, Antonio Canaletto, Stanley Spencer, David Hockney, Helen Chadwick and Peter Howson. Although some of you may recognise the names I have given, (I recognise Hockney, but thats about it!) many of the artists are from the Humberside and North East region so perhaps not that well known.
There is also a collection of paintings by Frederick Elwell R.A who lived in the nearby town of Beverley for many years. His paintings, including “the first born” which depicts a mother and father embracing their newborn baby in a traditional romantic style, are on permanent display in one of the gallery’s smaller rooms. I actually received the picture on a card when I gave birth to Zach.
There is also a huge life...

MMA - Mixed Martial Arts
Review of Martial Arts by
nakedchoke
Advantages: Covers only the things that work
Disadvantages: Hard to find somewhere to train
...knockout, submission or corner throwing in the towel. A new type of stage was built known as the octagon because of its shape this is where the competitors would fight. Standing 5 foot tall and surrounded by a chain link fence this would be the new ring, two man enter one man leaves. It was hoped the small amount of rules would keep this as close to a real situation as possible without being unsafe.
Fighters from around the world were brought together to prove their style was best. These fighters were:
Teila Tuli from Hawaii representing sumo. Most people know that Sumo is a Japanese form of martial art involving large men trying to push each other out of a circle. As you can imagine these overweight and limited skilled fighters dont do well in this type of competition.
Gerard Gordeau from Holland representing savate. Savate...

A wombling good time at Wimbledon School of Art.
Review of Wimbledon School of Art by
peel.rebekah
Advantages: International students and extremely good tutors
Disadvantages: Not in Central London
...design (period or otherwise) and set design. The students have to write, stage and perform in their own pieces, periodically through the year; these are other events I would recommend to non-students, as they are thoroughly enjoyable and original. I know several ex students from this department: One designed the Spice Girls costumes, wedding dresses etc. (I know, not a great claim to fame - but it pays the bills), one who worked on Bram Stoker’s Dracula and consequently anything else to do with vampires, quite a few who work in theatre, and mostly, three others that work in the film industry - all of which are doing very well for themselves, thankyou.
The school always manages to whip up a lot of interest from outside during the final shows: A good friend of mine was picked up by an international art gallery at his final show, and has...

stage door
Review of The Stage Door Restaurant, Aberdeen by
lesleyalan
Advantages: Lovely food at reasonable prices
Disadvantages: Stairs , too hot , can be expensive
...The stage door restaurant is situated just off Golden square in Aberdeen city centre.
We have had the pleasure of eating there twice. Both times we were in large parties (12 and 10) so this review is from the perspective of a group of diners out on a casual night out.
To get to the restaurant you have to go up a large flight of stairs so it is not suitable for anyone with mobilty problems. Once you trek all the way up the stairs you are met by a waiter who will show you to your table.
The restraurant itself is well set out so that you are not too close to other tables without feeling that your table is in the middle of nowhere. The tables are set out with the classic lots of shiny cutlery and pressed napkins. The decor is a lovely art deco style. It feels warm and cosy while still giving a formal feel. We did find the room...

Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock & Roll
Review of Bang Bang Rock 'n' Roll [Digipak] - Art Brut by
carl.mcqueen
Advantages: Rock and roll....comedic style!
Disadvantages: Disadvantages?!
....A" and "Fight!" - yes, these guys don't bother with complicated song titles, so I need not explain too much about what those two songs are about, but let me just give you a line from "Fight!" - "Come on, come on, lets have a fight" - as if from the pen of Shakespeare himself!
Another stand-out is "Bad Weekend", which is apparently based literally on why the band formed - to appear on Top of the Pops, and quite simple, nothing else! Hey, it's the reason why all bands form...honestly!
Also note, that as a live act, they're just as enthusiastic as on CD - exploding on stage like hyper-active jack-in-the-boxes, with Eddie Argos proclaiming at the start of every song; "Let's Go Art Brut!" - fun time rock and roll!
Of course, it's certainly not going to be appreciated by some people, particularly traditionalists, which is fair enough...

Speciality baby food from first stage weaning
Review of Beechnut Stages Baby Food by
Lisa365
Advantages: Baby loves food, good variety, no additives
Disadvantages: sometimes overly runny
...When weaning my daughter, I found it useful to have jars around for when I was too lazy to cook some food! They are also great when travelling, as you just open the jar and the food is ready to eat!
The difference between the other jars and Beechnut jars is that Beechnut is made for special diets. Most of the food jars are Kosher, or Gluten-Free or Soy-Free.
My daughter really loves the Beechnut Jars - in fact she likes it a lot more than my own food :-( But I know when giving her the jars that the food is made well with no unecessary ingredients. They contain exactly what I would have made myself, and they are pureed perfectly (unlike my own food which always has lumps!). Sometimes the Stage 1 jars I find are a bit too runny, but as long as it is safe and doesn't have lumps for her to choke on, I'm not worried.
Beechnut...

The Compleat Female Stage Beauty
Review of Stage Beauty DVD by
afy9mab
Advantages: Great script, performances and attention to detail
Disadvantages: Unnecessary nudity
...In 1660, the most beautiful woman on the London stage is played by a man. Ned Kynaston is the most feted “actress” in the country, dazzling everyone as Desdemona in “Othello”. But when Charles II bans men from playing women, Ned is out of a job and has to watch as his lovelorn dresser Maria takes to the stage. How will he cope? And can his acting talents stretch to playing men as well as women?
Director Richard Eyre is best known as an award-winning theatre director, so who better to direct a film about the theatre? He and screenwriter Jeffrey Hatcher (adapting his own stage play) interweave fact and fiction. Ned Kynaston was a Restoration-era star and Margaret (Maria) Hughes was the first woman on the stage. Hatcher’s script is well-written, witty, poignant and intelligent and will frequently be compared to the Oscar...

Staged Beauty
Review of Stage Beauty DVD by
ruth_cole
Advantages: Crudup's surprising and engaging performance
Disadvantages: rather predictable fare
...Maybe it’s because I was less than complimentary about Billy Crudup’s rather functional perfomance in Big Fish, or perhaps I was just in a sentimental mood as I settled down to watch this theatrical little tale, but I left it rather moved. No genius here, but a lot of heart made it something worth watching, if not an urgent recommendation.
Seventeeth century English law decreed that it was illegal for a woman to take to the stage. As such, some male actors would specialise in playing women’s parts. Billy Crudup takes to the screen as Ned Kynaston, a beloved star of the stage, famed for his Desdemona, supported and secretly worshipped by his plucky dresser, Maria (Claire Danes). Her suppressed passion to emulate the object of her desire on the stage is finally given its outlet when one theatre takes the risk...

All the world's a stage
Review of The Stage by
w1ldrover
Advantages: dedicated publication with lots of job opportunities
Disadvantages: none
...The Stage is a dedicated newspaper for all those who are involved or interested in the entertainment industry. Not only does it publish knowledgeable and well informed criticism of performances in theatres up and down the country, it also prints relevent articles affecting the entertainment industry. It also provides a shop window for actors, singers, dancers, magicians, etc to show the world what they can do and there are always loads of adverts for training and auditions. For those interested in working backstage it also displays adverts for training and jobs.
It is a very 'within the trade' publication, which means that unless you are in showbusiness a lot of the editorial content will go over your head, but makes interesting reading nevertheless and a newcomer to the glitzy world of showbiz might pick up a tip or two...
