Keep your Eyes Wide Open
Review of The Stanley Kubrick Collection DVD by  Kouros

Advantages: Great Collection of Films, fantastic direction, beautiful music
Disadvantages: Not to everyones taste - but what is?

...For those of you who have never seen a Stanley Kubrick film... Shame on you! You really don't know what you're missing out on! But seriously, a little background information. Stanley Kubrick was one of the great directors of the 20th Century, whose career began with boxing news reels in New York, and culminated with a psycho-sexual drama filmed in London, but also set in New York. Stanley Kubrick was a recluse, a man who despised flying, lived in England for much of his life. But, not an Englishman, he created some of most famous cross cultural (Anglo-American) films of our era. The Stanley Kubrick collection comprises his most famous films: Lolita, Dr. Strangelove, 2001, A ClockWork Orange, The Shining, Barry Lyndon, Full Metal Jacket, and his final film, Eyes Wide Shut. LOLITA Lolita is an intriguing film. In todays... Read review

Cruise. Kidman. Kubrick.
Review of Eyes Wide Shut DVD by  DarkMark

Advantages: Beautifully shot, expert direction, good performacnes
Disadvantages: not Kubrick's best, some may be bored, content may offend

...Apart from Martin Scorsese, there has never been a filmmaker more consistent than Stanley Kubrick in terms of style and substance. Any new kid on the block can (and have) imitate the work of other great directors but this is not the case with Kubrick. Often taking huge ‘time-out’ gaps between making movies, (the longest being twelve years between “Full Metal Jacket” and “Eyes Wide Shut”) Kubrick wasn’t exactly the kind of man who had the urge to bang out a film year after year to keep studios happy. No, with Kubrick, each long awaited film was a masterpiece, each showing a different yet surreal aspect to humanity and social image. Infamous for his zero compromise style of directing, often taking over the jobs of others to do things his way. His films usually developed an air of controversy to boot, especially “A Clockwork Orange”, which... Read review

Another Dirty Box
Review of Box Of The Banned 2 (Box Set) by  sghawken

Advantages: Great value movies
Disadvantages: Some real turkeys

..., an honest hard working adventuring sea captain. While he was a captain of a fishing boat, he was far from adventurous on the water. However as a child Molly was subjected to years of beatings and sexual abuse at the hands of her father. What triggers off in Molly’s mind is unclear, but for some reason she decides that all men must pay for the abuse she received; first seducing then killing several men. I hear people raving about this movie about how ahead of its time it was, but to me it just looks terribly dated. Its not a compelling movie and I seldom manage to stay awake through viewing of this “classic” that being said I do believe unlike the previous movie that the movie genuinely deserves to be in this box set. Molly is played by Millie Perkins, who holds the unusual title of being one of the only people in history to appear... Read review

* "Stanley I presume" . .
Review of Stanley Trim Knife by  smudgeybabes

Advantages: Very goon indeed.
Disadvantages: Can be dangerous

...OK, the knife is made by the famous Stanley company, and a lot of people here will think it just a "Stanley knife". Well let me just say that this is the Daddy of Stanley knives, it is a far better example of a wonderful tool. These are larger than conventional ones, and I thought these were only available to carpet fitters, as they are far too good for us mere Mortals. Having owned a second hand example, I can recommend it for accuracy and ease of handling. The bigger handle gives more control, and they still use the replaceable small blades. A Stanley knife, according to good old Wikipedia, is a utility knife (also called a box cutter, a Stanley knife, a razor blade knife, a carpet knife, or a stationery knife) is a common tool used in various trades and crafts for a variety of purposes. Israel and Switzerland call them Japanese... Read review

The Lee Evans Box Set
Review of Lee Evans (Box Set) by  kimhumphreys

Advantages: Ooooh, too many to put here!
Disadvantages: Erm....stitch from laughing too much!

...Hello everybody, I'm writing a review on this Box Set by Lee Evans! My Grandfather bought it for me because it was going cheap in a shop in the High Street. I'd previously bought Lee Evans 2005 XL Tour Live for my flat mate for Christmas. I watched it on Xmas day with him and was hooked! I let my Grandfather borrow it, he was hooked, then let my Parent's borrow it, they were hooked and thus starting a Lee Evans revolution within my family! It was a stroke of luck that my Grandfather was in the high street and saw this DVD Box Set in passing whilst searching for something else. He bought it, it was 19.99 GBP instead of the 39.99 GBP recommended retail price. (The new box set was coming out with the new XL DVD in it!) He bought it, and I've been watching them non-stop ever since. He did theorectically buy it for himself but since... Read review

Review of Samurai X - The Collection (Box Set) by  Jon_Farrimond

Advantages: Good value, good quality all around
Disadvantages: May be a little hard to understand for a first time anime viewer

Another great Simpsons box set
Review of The Simpsons - Series 6 - Complete (Homer Head Limited Edition Box Set) by  bigmike33

Advantages: Another superb Simpsons box set
Disadvantages: None

...I've got most of the Simpsons season box sets so didn't hesitate to purchase the Season 6 box set, which contains a massive 25 episodes, as well as commentaries for every episode, commercials and deleted scenes. Season 6 is one of the best seasons of the Simpsons, the others being season 4, 7 and 8. Of course these episodes are very old, as the DVD boxsets are being released very slowly, with all of these episodes at least 10 years old. A lot of great highlights come from these 25 episodes, including Lisa becoming competitive in Lisa On Ice, Bart accusing Ned of murder in Bart of Darkness and the hugely popular Who Shot Mr Burns part 1 episode. This is the first box set of the Simpsons where you have a choice of packaging, either the Homer head as pictured or an alternative packaging, which I plumped for because it fitted in with my... The Funniest Box Set, Ever.
Review of Monty Python Collection (Box Set) by  OddGodHMK

Advantages: A collection of all the great Monty Python movies
Disadvantages: Some movies, ie., Monty Python and the Meaning of Life, have no extra features

...Monty Python films are absolutely hilarious. I feel that, without a doubt, they are some of the finest movies ever made. At the time, I had only seen Monty Python and the Meaning of Life and I adored it, so when I saw the box set I thought "Fantastic!" and bought it, along with one of the CDs, within a week. Here's my review. This review focuses mainly on the content of the boxset rather than the films themselves, though I will include sections about the films. ~~~ Humour ~~~ Obviously, with Monty Python, the films are all meant to be humourous, and I agree that they are incredibly funny. I personally found Monty Python and the Meaning of Life to be the best of the four, and found Monty Python and the Holy Grail - which is the all-time favourite of probably 90% of the people that've seen the movies - to be my least favourite...
