Review of Cooler Master Thermal Compound Kit Premium by
bad_bob00
Advantages: Does its job, comes with good instructions, easy to use, some nice features
Disadvantages: More expensive then usual compound (worth it though if you have very cold CPU)
...*What it is*
Usually when it comes to computers, not many people have much knowledge of what processor heatsink paste actually is, and what job function it does inside a computer. To be honest though, you aren't really going to know what it is (not that many people would care) unless you were actually interested in the hardware-side of computers, and the configuration of the components. Basically processor heatsink paste is a thermal compound which is applied to the heatsink before it gets attached to the processor. This is done to make sure there is a good contact made between the two components. This is really important because the processor generates so much heat inside the computer, and this heat needs to be transferred instantly to the heatsink. Because it is really hard to make sure the heatsink is perfectly flat and able to make...

The best socket A heatsink available
Review of Thermalright SP-97 AMD Heatsink by
piloteer81
Advantages: Superb cooling, firm fixing, 80 or 92mm fans
Disadvantages: May not fit all boards. A bit fiddley.
...list of boards and conflicts on the thermalright website.
http://www.thermalright.com/
So how does it cool???? My processor is an AMD Athlon 2500XP-m, a mobile processor fitted in a PC. These overclock fantastically well! Mine currently is at 2500 mhz (2.5Ghz) which is equivalent to a normal athlon XP at something like 3700XP. On benchmark tests it performs as well as lower end athlon 64s and equals the performance of a P4 3.2ghz, no mean feat!
Of course overclocking to this state means you need to increase the voltage to the processor, and this means more heat!
The air temperature here is currently around 30'c, very warm and a little too warm for my liking!
This does mean however that the temps I get will be way above normal as the air passing over the heatsink will be warm too,
At a voltage of 1.675v I am getting a temperature of 44...

A professional grade scanner at affordable pricing
Review of Epson Perfection 2450 Photo by
rex73
Advantages: Great Look, quality of workmanship, great resolution, speed (USB 2.0 and IEEE firewire connection
Disadvantages: Will not scan anything beyound 8.5" x 11" max
...any 1.1 USB equipment to a USB 2.0 port.
However, many of the relatively new computers are not USB 2.0 ready, so if the speed is issue to you, you have two options with this scanner. You can either purchase an USB 2.0 to PCI expansion card (if you are going to do so the Startech www.startech.com makes great and inexpensive USB 2.0 cards) or if your computer comes equipped with the IEEE1394 (firewire) port, you can also hook up this unit this way as well for almost equal blazing speeds and reliability.
As far as the operational specs of this unit, the stats that this unit offers are quite impressive. The unit is capable of scanning anything up to 8.5" x11" (this is the only downplay I have found with this unit; would be nice if the unit could scan at least legal size documents but I suppose I can live with that) and a blazing resolution...

AMD Thunderbird - Scary to fit
Review of AMD Thunderbird by
RedFox
Advantages: Faster than equivalent Intel chips and lower in price
Disadvantages: No heat cut-out protection so fitting them is risky. They are easy to crush if you're not careful...
...case because I would have to take everything out of my computer to fit the motherboard and processor anyway and fitting a powersupply is another hastle for a relatively low saving. Also I needed to buy a heatsink but more about that in a moment.
-------------------------------------
[Parts needed]
The parts I decided to buy were:
From www.Ebuyer.com:
AMD K7 Thunderbird @ 1.4GHZ ~£105
ECS K7S5A Socket A Motherboard w/onboard sound ~£65
Thermaltake Mini-Orb Heatsink (rated upto 1.5GHz) ~£12
Local computer shop:
ATX form factor case w/300W powersupply and extra case fan ~£50
Final cost ~£227
Ouch. Its an investment though, I figured, since the its fast enough to last me a few years at least. Extra was spent on the heatsink and a case with an extra fan and this is recommended since Thunderbirds run hotter than...

A Via K8T800 chipset, with Abit's hi-tech around
Review of ABIT KV8-MAX3 - motherboard - ATX - K8T800 by
r-y-u
Advantages: Performance, nice cooling system, double RAID
Disadvantages: Low quality chipset fan
...Abit's MAX series keeps going on with this excellent piece of technology. Although it's not the latest technology out there right now, it is fairly fast, and one of the best socket 754 motherboards you can get.
MAX 3 comes equipped with tons of onboard features, such as the 3 Com Gigabit Ethernet, one on chip Via RAID controller (2xSATA), and another one onboard Silicon Image (4xSATA), allowing you to connect on your computer up to 10 (!!!) Hard Drives and CD/DVD drives. Its AGP guarantees to satisfy any gamer who inserts to it the most powerful AGPx4/x8 video card of his choice.
Its high quality 5.1 sound card has to offer crystal clear surround sound, powered by Realtek. And for the hardcore sound fanatics, this board is equiped with Optical In and Optical Out jacks at the back. Can't get any better!
Abit's OTES thermal solution...

OUT WITH THE OLD..
Review of AMD AthlonXP by
evansuk
Advantages: Rapid Speeds, Stable and Cheap
Disadvantages: None as yet
...In with the new - AMD Athlon XP 2000+
After several violent outbreaks caused by the crashing of my ancient computer system - running Windows BC (before Christ), I decided it was time to upgrade my processor.
Whilst browsing through ebuyer.com I noticed the fantastic deal of an Retail Athlon XP 2000+ processor for £60 inc VAT. I whipped out my debit card and purchased it immediately amongst a few other goodies to spice up my new self built computer.
Packaging - Drastic plastic
I received my new piece of kit within a couple of days. I tore off the external packaging to reveal a small plastic green cardboard lined box, boasting the Athlon XP logo and the words “Extreme performance for Windows XP” highlighted in the centre. At the bottom of the box lies a Athlon XP hologram, to assure you that the product is real. ( I have actually...

Best performance to cost ratio
Review of AMD Duron by
cjkace
Advantages: Cheap, great performance
Disadvantages: Runs hot, need new motherboard
...rate ram support, but these are expensive as is the memory, alyhough the Duron will run on it.
With these being priced so competitively and kicking the Celeron's behind (even the newer 100Mhz FSB Celeron's) there is just no reason to buy a Celeron. In certain situations the Duron can even outpace a similar speed Pentium 3. I've been using mine for around five months and it's still going strong.
The only major downfall is that the processor runs quite hot, meaning that a hefty heatsink is a of paramount importance. I have a Coolermaster DHP-51 and AMD carry a list of approved heatsinks on their website at www.amd.com. If you build your own PC then be very careful when fitting your heatsink as it is quite easy to chip the actual core of your processor and render it totally useless.
**UPDATE**
The 950Mhz Duron is listed on Dabs website...

Xdream Cooling Power
Review of Cooler Master XDream HAC V81 by
gilly_uk
Advantages: Efficient cooling, speed control
Disadvantages: Noisey at full power
...This was the very first heatsink I ever purchased. Coolermaster are renound for there cooling products from there cases right down to there fans. There are many heatsinks on the market and all have there own unique way of removing heat. The typical heatsink consists of a metal block usually made from copper or aluminum due to there heat conductivity being so good. On top of this block a fan is attached to keep the block cool and disperse the heat.
First Impressions - When i first had the XDream in my hands i was shocked at the size of it. Even a bit worried if it would actually fit in my case its very wide. Non the less i took out my old heatsink and started the frustrating part of attaching the new heatsink.
Installation - This part had to be the most worrying part for me. When installing the heatsink i was working very close...

Overall
--------------------------------------------------------
The board is well designed and well priced, its a shame the RAM isn't faster, but everything else is top-notch. Its got all the normal bits and bobs and pulls of everything quite well, apart from those funny heatsinks. As you would expect the box was nice (some people like to know these things) and the manual is easy to read. The device seems stable at a range of temperatures and is well...

cooling on a budget
Review of Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro by
sim_simian
Advantages: cheap and quiet
Disadvantages: installation nightmare
...I bought this cooler the other day on Amazon and it arrived today, thankfully 20 minutes after my new cpu did.
The first thing that struck me was that the fan is positioned to the side of the heatsink rather than on top of it. Thus blowing hot air through the fins of the heatsink, which has the added advantage of cooling the electical transistors on the motherboard. The heatsink also came with thermal paste already in place which made things easier. After my old generic fan (that came with my medion pc) this seems so quiet, its unbelievable. A few times today I have thought the pc was not coming on because I could nt hear anything. In fact I never realised my hard drive made so much noise. So a few hours in and no problems and very happy with the product.
That said all was not "sunshine and lollipops", the installation was a complete...
