A short tale about Stavanger

Advantages: Great nature and scenery, long summer days
Disadvantages: Can be a bit expensive, weather can be unpredictable

...I have a confession to make: I have not travelled to Stavanger in Norway...I live here. But I hope that I can contribute with information that will help you if you come to visit. Stavanger is located in the area Rogaland in the south-west coast of Norway. The people that live here are still debating wether we belong to the south of the country or if we can regard ourselves as true westeners. SO far we have not been able to reach a conclusion. The history of the city is long?the cathedral in the middle of Stavanger (Domkirken) dates back to 1125 if I?m not mistaken. The cathedral today is one of the sights in Stavanger. No, it is not as BIG as Notre Dame or other cathedrals in the big European cities. It is a small intimate cathedral and the most unique thing is that it is bulit in both roman and gothic style. Review of General: Norway

Cheap Cheerful and extremely enjoyable!

Advantages: Everything Really!
Disadvantages: Pool was closed.

...July 07 6 of us decided to go away for a 'mini cruise' this was a free offer as they were introducing the 'Queen of Scandinavia' on the Newcastle - Stavanger crossing. We didn't expect much and couldn't really find out much information online apart from images of the rooms. As the free promotion we were in a seaways class cabin with no window but thankfully upper decks (above the sea). We left on a Sunday night due to leave at 11pm boarding from 8.30. The dfds terminal at North shields was rather large with a pub up the road and on site safe parking (£8 per night). Unfortunately the Ship was late in and check in was delayed. We checked in at around 10.30 and then began boarding. As soon as we set foot on the ship we were greeted by kind staff who directed us to our rooms. The entrance and lobby was clean and shiny...

Our Norwegian Mini-Cruise

Advantages: Great offers, good value prices, en-suite cabins
Disadvantages: Expensive food, can be bad if you get sea sick

...and Holland. Our free cruise to Norway stopped at Stavanger in Norway before turning round and heading back to Newcastle. Due to the cheapness (i.e. free-ness!) of the trip we only had one hour and thirty minutes in Norway. We were rather annoyed when we turned up early and found another boat held up in the place we would have anchored and had to wait 30mins ? this obviously cut out a significant proportion of our stay in Norway. However, this wasn?t DFDS?s fault and we still saw loads of Stavanger in the remaining time. I think the ordinary trip to Norway carries on up through the Norwegian Fjords towards Bergen, but our free trip was just to Stavanger and back. The amazing Kjerag

Advantages: Amazing views of the Lysefjord
Disadvantages: You have to be a bit fit to do this :-)

...Kjerag is located about 2 hours outside Stavanger on the south west coast of Norway. At the top of the Kjerag area you are located about 1000 meter above Lysefjord and the view can be quite amazing. Kjerag has become a quite popular hiking destination in the last few years. Some go there because Preikestolen (Pulpit rock) has become too crowded, some people go to jump onto Kjeragbolten and quite a lot of BASE jumpers go there to dive of the might cliffs. Review of Kjerag, Norway

My local airport.

Advantages: Small airport all within one big terminal building so easy to use
Disadvantages: Not enough international flights

...Air France:- Paris CDG which is operated by Gillair in a Fokker 100 three times daily British Airways Including partners like Brymon and Cityflyer :- Birmingham ,Cardiff, Bristol, Southampton, Gatwick , Heathrow, Copenhagen, Aberdeen, Dublin ,Belfast City and soon to Oslo and Cork Sabena:-Brussels four times a day on a four engine jet Braathens:- Twice daily to Stavanger Lufthansa:-New service to Dusseldorf shortly with parther Ausburg air. The only Airlines to offer Business class from Newcastle are Sabena and Air France. Charter Aircrafts fly regular into Newcastle and we have destinations like Orlando Sanford and Toronto as well as loads of others.Ive never travel charter so thats all I can say except Benidorm with the uniform of a Newcastle United top!!!! Review of Northumberland (England)

No way is there anywhere better than Norway

Advantages: Fantastic food, lovely ship, views that could turn a man to religion
Disadvantages: Bumpy ride if you go in winter. Cabin a bit cozy

...hung in relation to the wall, we could see what angle the ship was pitching at. As we got about 2 hours west of Stavanger (our first port), the sea got mental. One moment saw the boat pitch up, then left 40 degrees and then right 40 degrees. We both fell out of bed and I could hear people screaming. The shops had to be shut as things were being thrown off the shelves, and the captain was advising everyone to go to the main desk if they needed medical assistance. Now I know that there are bound to be worse sea journeys than this one, but for a first timer this was all a tad scary. But at around 4pm during a period of thick, dark fog, we managed to see, for the first time in 19 hours?land! Ok, it was a patch of rock but it was land all the same. A haven of calm for travellers to/from Norway

Advantages: Contemporary design, amazingly quiet and relaxing atmosphere!
Disadvantages: Refreshments are expensive

...49,- which is approx £4. There used to be only a limited selection of shops in the departure hall, but they have recently developed a new shopping area and this has much improved the choice! There is of course the obligatiry Duty Free, along with fashion shops and places to pick up souvenirs and traditional Norwegian produce. I reckon you have probably guessed that this is my favourite airport! All the others seem to be so stressful and fast-paced you just get annoyed and aggravated - at Oslo Airport Gardermoen you will notice the difference! ...aaaaaaaah....relax... The beautiful Vigeland Park

Advantages: Beautiful sculptures, a break from the city life
Disadvantages: Can be quite crowded in the summer time

...is not really that far. If you want to walk you walk up Karl Johan, pass the Royal palace on the right hand side, walk up Bogstadveien and turn left into Kirkeveien. About the Vigeland Park So what is the Vigeland Park? Well, it is a park that includes 212 sculptures made by the artist and sculptor Gustav Vigeland (1869-1943). I?m not sure how the project came about but Gustav Vigeland teamed up with the city of Oslo and he got a house and a studio and in return he made sculptures for the park. Wedding in KL

Advantages: A taste of Asia
Disadvantages: KL is "small" and it doesn't offer that many great attractions

...Once again it turns out that it is great having friends around the world. The trip to Singapore and Kuala Lumpur was triggered by an invitation to a wedding in Kuala Lumpur (called KL from now on). We didn?t get that much time to plan the trip because we got the invitation on pretty short notice. We did manage to get tickets round trip from Stavanger to Singapore for about 6000 Norwegian kroner (about 650 US dollars) and that is not bad. Maybe the price is related to the time of year when we went on the trip. We started from Stavanger on November 9th 2000. As usual we flew to Amsterdam to catch the next flight from there to Singapore. When I say we I?m referring to my love Nikki and myself. For the first time we had decided to bring a video camera. I also had to bring a laptop and it can get pretty heavy to carry all these items around...
