Stealth. It's crap.

Advantages: Starts off well. Amazing special effects.
Disadvantages: All over the place. Cruddy dialogue. Can't make up its mind what it wants to be.

...Stealth is an interesting movie, but probably not for the 'right' reasons. While at times it's a completely formulaic action movie, it strives to be more intelligent than it actually is. "In the near future", out of four hundred applicants for a new Navy programme, only three aviators have been selected. Of course, being America, they're all young and easy on the eye and not at all the experienced aviators you'd expect to fly the state of the art machines. Lt. ...As the warmer weather approaches and the waters around the English coast begin to heat up a little bit I sometimes wonder if the temperature will perhaps rise enough for me to dispense with my bulky dry suit and all the thermal gear and be able to slip into my Pinnacle Stealth semi dry suit, when I say slip what I actually mean is to squeeze, curse and contort my body into said suit as the only main criticism I have of this suit is that it is not the easiest to get into. Shame this didn't stealthily avoid me!

Advantages: Cast looks okay and um.... CGI & flying is very good
Disadvantages: Acting, script, direction, everything really!

...Stealth is a prime example of the high concept pitch gone wrong, and it just goes to show that sometimes the idea of making a film just because the pitch is good can be so mistaken. I can imagine the makers of this film going to in to see the studio executives and selling the idea of the film with the words "Top Gun meets Wargames, with a bit of a buddy movie thrown in' The execs then rub their hands in glee, thinking of the money rolling in and asking for more details. ...From some of my previous movie reviews you've probably gathered that I often don't rent films on their oscar winning potential, and instead go fo films to entertain - even if they do fall into the 'so bad their good' catagory. I have wanted to see Stealth for a while, infact ever since I saw a flashy 30 second trailer on the internet. Finally I got round to it, although wasn't expecting too much from the film. The story is set in the near future (classic - basically this means you can get away with technical slip ups by saying technology has advanced). Highway to the pilotless danger zone

Advantages: Enjoyable
Disadvantages: Nothing special

...: a completely automatic and independent stealth plane, virtually capable of thinking for itself. Requiring no pilot, the plane, EDI (pronounced like Eddie), joins them, but it isn't too long before ulterior motives and some highly dangerous and precarious situations reveal that there is more to the military project that initially meets the eye. Okay, so the plot doesn't seem particularly complicated, and this is the case throughout. There are a few more plot details as the film progresses, naturally, and while I won't give them away, there really is nothing surprising about any of it. The acting is decent enough, will all roles quite convincing. Everyone goes on about Metal Gear Solid, but MGS doesn't hold a candle up to Tenchu! The game is basically a stealth game where you steer your character, either Rikimaru or Ayame, through the missions set out for you. These vary from making corrupt businessmen pay for their misdemeanors and rescuing hostages. To accomplish these missions you have to use stealth to creep up on guards and soldiers, kill them quickly and get back into hiding. You can creep along walls, hang and shimmy on edges and crouch and roll through trees. This game isn't particularly difficult by the time you get to the later levels. ...cheque to be had? The special effects throughout are laughable. For a kick-off the production design is terrible. I know the stealth fighters must have been based on the ugly but effective Blackbird bomber, but frankly they end up looking like the spacecraft from "Flight of the Navigator". It might be forgivable if they were at least rendered properly, but the opening aerial combat features muddy visuals that look unfinished because the wing edges aren't properly defined. Then there's the use of shoddily made models and background mattes that can't compete with reality or well thought out CGI. The scoring is as slipshod as the rest of the movie that mixes self-important brass based orchestral music with drum machine dance breaks to teeth-grindingly loud effect.
