Britannia Stockport - a good budget stopover

Advantages: Cheap, spacious, good location
Disadvantages: Old fashioned decor, poor service on a few occasions

...My husband and I spent last weekend in Manchester visiting friends and family, and chose Britannia Stockport Hotel as our base for the weekend. The hotel is situated on Dialstone Lane in Offerton, Stockport, and is about 5 minutes away from the M60 ringroad around Manchester. I had previously read several reviews of this hotel on other websites suggesting that the hotel was terrible ? dirty rooms, poor service etc. However we decided to give it a try as it was an ideal location for us and for less than £90 for three nights for both of us the price was unbeatable. I originally found information about the hotel by searching for hotels in Stockport on www.lastminute.com, which states that the hotel is 3*, and that the ?bedrooms are dated but clean and are also currently being refurbished.? ***BOOKING I made my booking through...

Stockport County AFC

Advantages: Football is the greatest game in the world ever, we're not Manchester United
Disadvantages: We lose more often than we win

...I am a season ticket holder at Stockport County, and the 2000/2001 season has just finished, with County in 19th place. The fact that relegation fears were only averted one weekend before the end of the season might not sound all that good to all you Manchester United fans down there in Taunton and Exeter. In fact, Edgeley Park (home of the County) is only seven miles from your Old Trafford ground. But you didn't know that, did you??? Anyway, to support such a team in the shadow of the two Manchester clubs takes real dedication, and the fact that our average crowd for last season was around 7,000 shows that the majority of the population of Stockport just don't turn out to watch the team. Fair play to them, sometimes County can be quite dire. Manager Andy Kilner's tactics can be beyond belief, four defenders out of five...

THE BEST VALUE IN TOWN

Advantages: Location. Excellent Value For Money. Good Quality Room and En-suite.
Disadvantages: Check-In at the Bar. Some May Not Like Pub Eating.

...WHY DID WE BOOK THE INNKEEPERS LODGE STOCKPORT? It is that time of year when I get out and meet the customers, playing Santa-Claus with our company calendars. Stockport is probably the most productive individual town in our particular industry now, within fifteen minutes of this particular hotel I can (in turnover terms at least) visit around 30% of our customers. For anyone conducting business in the area of south east Manchester or Stockport this Lodge makes a very good base. HOTEL DESCRIPTION / OUR PERCEPTION FROM HOTEL PUBLICITY The Innkeepers Lodge brand is rather less well known generally than the likes of Premier Travel Inn (who are much bigger), Ibis, Campanile or Days Inn. However, the website is very efficient, presents what appears to be an honest description of the property and clearly lists the facilities...

Friends of Food!

Advantages: Very generous portions, amazing food, amazing quality and looks wonderful!
Disadvantages: very very busy, although family friendly I wouldn't take your kids there for a quiet meal!

...Being a Taurus, I love excellent food, so dining out can either be a bit crap or simply, amazing. I went to Amici previously with my mother and her partner but we opted to go again as it had been a wonderful time, and we had my ten year old brother with us. The restaurant is on a (not-so) quiet main road in Stockport, and looks lovely from the outside. It's smack bang in the middle of some plain buildings, so it's not at all hard to miss. We parked in the parking lot round the back, and made our way through to the front where we were greeted by a waiter. "We have a table for four, yes, but to advise you we have a disco on at half ten so we may have to start clearing your table then." Since it was only half 8, we agreed to stay and so he seated us in a waiting room, a lovely little comfy area (with full view of the gorgeous desserts...

Hats the way I like my museums

Advantages: good for all the family, a fun specialsist museum
Disadvantages: some labels diffcult to read, can be quite dim at times. No really old hats

...Are you mad as a hatter when it comes to has? Do you feel naked without your beanie, baseball cap or posh wedding hat? I know the ideal place for you. It is Stockport's Hat Works, an award winning attraction (best small visitor attraction 2002) which is the only museum dedicated to hats and the hat making industry in Britain. It is appropriate that the museum is in Stockport. Until very recently the town was one of the predominant industries in the area. At its peak in the 19th century it employed 4737 people and exported 6 million hats per year. The hat making industries have now disappeared but they have left a lasting legacy including the Victorian mill it is housed in which is a grade 2 listed building. The Hatworks is ultra easy to find. It is right next to the town's bus station. There is an entrance to the museum...

Building for the future

Advantages: Good young players who may do well in the Second Division
Disadvantages: Woeful season

...Today's 3-1 defeat at Wimbledon confirmed what we all knew weeks ago, that Stockport County would be playing in the Second Division next season. It is somewhat unusual for a team to be relegated as early as mid March but when you realise that they have only won three out of 39 games all season in the league then you start to realise why they are in this position. Sixteen defeats at home out of 19 starts tells it's own tale. County got off to a poor start to the season but have picked up some good results notably a draw against local rivals Manchester City. Manager Carlton Palmer must have known the magnitude of the task when he took on this job but very sensibly he is building for the future, bringing in youngsters like Andy Thomas, John Hardiker, Rob Clare and Fraser McLachlan. If you look at the statistics County have tended to...

The Acton Factor..?

Advantages: great rates, Good location, Attentive staff
Disadvantages: Decor Dated, Plumbing Dated, Menus Dated!

...The Acton Court Hotel is well known to past and present residents of Stockport. It is situated on the busy A6 road opposite Stockport Grammar and has been the location for many a wedding (including quite a few Coronation Street fictional affairs and my own very real Wedding breakfast), as well as party nights, funeral teas, murder mystery weekend, you name it. As a family, we have had many a "do" in this hotel. The hotel claims it is ten minutes to Manchester International Airport, although I am not sure what mode of transport this relates to! Location wise, the hotel is in a great spot, there are plenty of restaurants and bars within easy reach whether you go south or north, and it is very easy to find. There is also ample parking for this 35 bedroom hotel. We didn't actually choose to stay here this weekend, as we needed to be...

Pizza Hut is Grand!

Advantages: Wide selection, good service, nice food
Disadvantages: Cold food on hot plates, music too loud

...I have been to both the Grand Central Pizza Hut in Sockport and the one in Portwood. My review is mainly centred on Grand Central, however I will say when I am comparing, or referring to Portwood. I have never had a takeaway from either resturant as we have always ate in. My boyfriend and I used to go to Grand Central Pizza Hut on the A6 in Stockport at least once a month as it is a pleasant place to eat and the prices are reasonable. THE FOOD They offer starters (or "sides") which include potato wedges with dips, garlic bread, chicken goujons and nachos, to name but a few. They have also recently started doing sharing starters where you can get larger portions of things like fajita wraps. Certain sides come with free dips but you can also buy extra dips if so you wish - dips available are: barbecue, sour sream & chive, garlic...

Diamond review  Great place to stay that doesn't cost the earth!

Advantages: Reasonably priced, good standard of accommodation
Disadvantages: Shame there aren't more of them

...company. Having only ever used Travelodge before when going on mini breaks to Wales and the south-west I had a look on their website. At that time they had very few suitable properties to the south of Manchester and ideally I wanted to be with in a few minutes drive of my brothers house so that it would not take to long getting back to the hotel when leaving fairly late at night. So I had a search for other suitable places when I spotted that at home we had a Premier Lodge brochure that my brother had picked up when he stayed in a Premier Lodge for a fortnight when he was away on work. So I had a look at the website (www.premierlodge.co.uk) and saw that for just under £50 a night I could stay at the Premier Lodge in Stockport and this was very near to where we wanted to be. The price was reasonable and due to it being pretty near to...
