Stoke Talke - Is it worthing talking about?
Advantages: Price, Rooms, Cleanliness
Disadvantages: No buses,
...Thanks to a recent visit to Alton Towers we decided to stay at Stoke Talke
Travel Lodge - Stoke Talke - Newcastle Road - ST7 1UP
Booking the hotel
Like all Travel Lodge rooms all you need to do is surf along to their website, I booked the room about 6 weeks before our arrival date so I was fortunate enough to get the room at the discounted price of £29 per room. Once I booked them room online I received confirmation in the form of an email from TL. I booked 2 family room which will sleep 3 adults on a non smoking basis.
Please bear in mind that the prices will be cheaper if you book in advance, certain prices are non refundable.
Getting to Stoke Talk Travel Lodge
We travelled from Edinburgh by car to Stoke Talke - It taken us 5hrs and that included stopping at services for a wee brew. From Edinburgh we...

The Moat House - Stoke
Advantages: Good facilities, Good food,
Disadvantages: None
...We fancied a few days away and decided to visit Alton Towers, unfortunately the on-site hotel was fully booked so we looked for alternatives. After the normal review / price checking we opted for the Best Western Moat House in Stoke on Trent (it is 15 miles from Alton Towers which due to the roads works out to be 40 ins drive).
We booked for 3 night at £116 per room including breakfast directly through the hotels web site. The hotel has an adequate amount secure on-site parking we went into the hotel. The nearest entrance to the car park takes you into the ground floor where the gym, bar and restaurant is located, so you need to take the lift (or stairs) to the first floor and reception.
The reception area is large and well presented, with free copies of The Independent. Check in was the normal fill in some details, take a swipe...

Stoked: The Rise And Fall Of Gator (DVD)
Advantages: Great DVD for fans of skateboarding and dcumentaries alike
Disadvantages: If you're not into Punk or Skateboarding then this documentary may begin to grate on you
...Stoked is a DVD documentary that follows the life of Mark "Gator" Rogowski and tells the story how one of the 80s most talented professional skateboarders is now serving 31 years in prison. This DVD features a strong soundtrack with contributions from such Hardcore Punk acts as Black Flag, Agent Orange, and the Dead Kennedys.
This is a great DVD that tells the story of how skating changed, causing Gator's popularity to dwindle. This caused him to slowly break down mentally as he could not handle the fact that he was not in favour anymore - he tried to reinvent himself with a name change but this caused people to respect him even less. It was not known of the tragic mental state of Gator until the spring of 1991 when he confessed to a violent crime at the age of 24. This DVD will have you glued as it slowly tells you the life story...

Travelodge Stoke Talke
Advantages: Cheap
Disadvantages: Quality of room isn't up to much
...getaway in the morning! At five pounds, you'd be better off trying to find a supermarket cafe for a better breakfast.
Overall this hotel offers some very cheap rooms which, although quite old and well-used, more than foot the bill for a one night stop-over on a motorway journey. This hotel is very close to the M6 and the A500 for easy access for Stoke on Trent and Newcastle Under Lyme. As this is just off the motorway, there are no other facilities available in the immediate vicinity. I'd recommend this for a one-nighter but not for a long stay....

Stoke-on-Trent and its 5 towns come and see us
Advantages: Taxi, bus and rail service all excellant
Disadvantages: A 500 road works
...Well where do I start,
Stoke-on-Trent, with its pottery industry 5 towns, both past and present, The Birth place of Robbie Williams, its connections with the legendary Sir Stanley Mathews and Famous Master Potter Josiah Wedgewood.
If arriving in Stoke-on-Trent via train, you would probably arrive at Stoke train station itself, outside of the station there is a Taxi service (North Staff/Eagle)(lucky Seven)(knights) and (Sids Taxi's) are all very reliable and reasonably priced, The local bus service( First Stop) operate on a regular basis, there is also independent smaller bus companies as well.
If wanting to use any of the local collages they are all in short walking distance of the train station, on exiting the station turn right, take your first left, and you will find Stoke-on-Trent on your right hand side.
If you want Stoke...

Stoke-On-Trent the pottery place
Advantages: Beautiful towns, Excellent Demonstrations, Good value factory shops
Disadvantages: None
...I'd promised my wife since before we got married that I'd take her to Stoke-on-Trent, but it took us nearly 5 years to get there.
Our journey began in a warm London just before 6am and ended around 3 hours later in a rather wet Stoke-on-Trent.
Our first port of call was the touriist information centre which is well signposted. We picked up maps showing the pottery places and a list of local accomodation.
We visted Pottermerion, Royal Doulton, Wedgewood, Ansley, and many other factory shops. The items on sale tend to be "seconds" with slight defects that in some cases can't be noticed, and the sale price is less than half that of a normal product. Many of the companies offer factory tours and demonstrations of how the pottery is made - all of which are very good.
We finished around 6pm and decided to spend the night in...

We don't all use the word "Duck" you know
Advantages: not a bad place to live
Disadvantages: -
...Stoke on Trent or otherwise known as the Potteries has probably classed as one of the worst places to live in the UK, but when you sit down to eat please think about where your crockery came from, we do have some uses.
Known as the Potteries or the 6 Towns, Stoke on Trent in renowned for its Pottery Industry which unfortunately over the past 20 years has seen the closure of many of Stokes famous POt Banks and has resulted in a lot of people out of work.

Exceptional on All Accounts
Advantages: Great Food, Nice Restaurant
Disadvantages: -
...I travel quite a bit in my job and a lot of time I like to pre arrange where I am going to eat if I stay over somewhere. Recommendations go a long way for me, thats why you may have noticed that I have been reviewing my favourite restaurants in my local area, so if any of you find yourself staying in Stoke on Trent on business or on pleasure, i hope you take my recommendations on board.
Mr Chan's is an established Chinese restaurant in the Stoke on Trent area and has been serving the people of the Potteries for over 20 years. An exceptional restaurant that somehow I feel gets forgotten about unless you are a regular guest there like myself.
Mr Chan's is not in an ideal location at the end of the day. Although it is situated in Hanley, the main town of Stoke on Trent, its actual position within the town leaves it somewhat hidden...

a pepperoni pizza of a place, duck
Advantages: Centrally placed, great oatcakes, unpretentious people
Disadvantages: Confusing to navigate, not as vibrant as neighbouring Birmingham or Manchester
...I love Stoke-on-Trent, but I quite understand why other people don't. I was born and bred in Stoke-on-Trent and know it well. Although I've left several times, I have always returned.
Here is my attempt at a balanced overview:
Location:
Situated just off the M6, half way between Birmingham and Manchester, so centrally placed for both getting away from and coming to.
Layout:
Although a city, Stoke-on-Trent is actually made up of six (not five!) towns – Hanley, Longton, Stoke, Fenton, Burslem and Tunstall. Imagine a big pizza base with six chunks of pepperoni for the towns, and long, thin anchovy fillets for the connecting roads, and there you have it.
And herein lies one of Stoke's problems: it is very confusing. Although the city is named after the town of Stoke, the actual city centre is the town of Hanley...
