Reviews of storage enclosure scsi
A little more sun in your life.
Review of Sun Netra st D130 - storage enclosure by
sjhill
Advantages: NEBS compliant, 1U Ultra SCSI disk cage.
Disadvantages: EOL was 2002
...Here we have a handy little 1U disk cage, which will take up to three Ultra SCSI drives. Oh, and it's NEBS compliant, so you can put in datacenters and telephone exchanges.
SCSI ports -
Two single-ended ports, 68-pin SCSI connector - Can be daisy chained via port (2 max in a chain)
Power -
The disk cage can be powered by AC or DC power. (I used the AC model) which has an auto sensing power supply - takes 100 to 240 VAC. There is also a DC model, to go with the Netra range... The DC model will take -48 to -60 VDC.
Drives -
The drives are inserted at the front of the 19" rack mounted unit, SCA disks, on Sun SPUD type brackets. The SCSI bays are either ID 2,3&4 or 10,11&12 which is flexible enough if you have to chain two together.
Uses -
People will find these most useful as a chassis to put boot disks in for larger Sun syste...

Scuzzy wuzzy, lets get buzzy
Review of Adaptec AVA 2904 by
shearerm
Advantages: A bargain. Easy to install and used. Good entry level SCSI controller.
Disadvantages: No support for higher data rates.
...of storage you can string together a bunch of old SCSI hard drives and end up with a reasonable amount of storage that isn’t too slow and will function reliably.
So in summary SCSI moves data faster, you can connect a lot of devices, it is more reliable but it does cost a bit more.
This brings me to Adaptec’s AVA two thousand nine hundred series. I personally am the proud owner of an AVA – 2904. Adaptec seem to increment the numbers (for example, I have seen a 2906 about) but I think this represents minor improvements to the series or cards intended for different markets. First, the good news this card is cheap. I bought mine for only £30, ideal as I am short of cash right now and I only wanted it to run an elderly SCSI cd writer at home. It also installed perfectly, I popped in the new card restarted my PC, it came back...

Enter the Gigafloppy
Review of SyQuest SyJet SyJet drive 1.5 GB by
dobieg
Advantages: Now cheap, reasonable data volumes, easy to use
Disadvantages: new media hard to obtain, old technology
...Wouldn't it be great if you could have a medium as easy to use as a floppy disk, that was almost as quick as a hard drive, held a halfway decent amount of data, and was reusable?
Guess what - it's already been invented, and by all accounts has already been thrown upon the scrap heap of 'great ideas that never quite made it big time'
I speak of the Syquest SyJet 1.5Gb removable disk drive.
Nowadays, in a world obsessed by CD and DVD technology, it's easy to mock parallel port devices that present a 'virtual SCSI' interface to your PC or Mac, and use moderately expensive and highly obscure media - but these are still useful bits of kit to have around.
Mention 'removable storage' and two names immediately spring to mind; Iomega with their ZIP drive and SyQuest.
The SyJet 1.5Gb offers a quality product which provides all...

This is how backups SHOULD be
Review of Quantum DLT 8000 40 GB 80 GB by
Kevin_Pritchard
Advantages: Fast, reliable, and the prices are coming down
Disadvantages: Tape load time is still slow... typical DLT, though
...that this drive can deliver. It's crucial that your main storage is on a separate SCSI chain from the tape drive. Although SCSI handles device-to-device transfers well, you'll get more bang for your buck if you dedicate a SCSI controller for CD-ROMs, Tape drives, etc. Keep your hard disk storage segregated and you'll be a happy camper.
Software compatibility is another issue entirely. Most enterprise backup systems will include a driver for this unit, assuming the software is reasonably new. There are drivers available at Quantum's website if not.
Several tape manufacturers OEM this drive, so check the website of the manufacturer stamped on the front of the drive.

Look at my Little ones
Review of HP Dual Port Hard drive 146 GB by
andycharger
Advantages: Smaller, less power hungry
Disadvantages: None
...Following on from my review yesterday on server Ultra SCSI hard disks, here im going to tell you about their younger, smaller and better brother. The Serial SCSI hot swap 146.8Gb Hard disks by HP.
As with all technology, everything seems to be in the constant evolution to downsize. Hard drive downsizing always struck me as a difficult one to tackle as people require more and more storage, hence bigger disk space. Somehow the Serial SCSI has mastered this by shrinking the form factor down from a width of 3.5 inches to 2.5. The Height of the device is also somewhat reduced.
A reduction in size means a reduction in moving parts size. This in turn leads to a great power saving which makes these drives more economical and environmentally friendly than their older but bigger brothers.
As mentioned we have a mixture of G4 and G5...

Akasa Integral External Storage Enclosure
Review of Akasa Integral P2 AK-ENP2N-BK by
avenger7855
Advantages: Quick way of expanding hard drive space or retrieving data from a damaged laptop.
Disadvantages: Can over heat if left on for serveral hours at a time.
...The Akasa Integral external storage enclosure, is a great device for individuals who wish to perhaps expand there laptop with more hard disc drive space, or perhaps for those who wish to retrieve the data from a damaged laptop, that still has a working hard drive.
I found the device incredibly handy when my laptop crashed, and I had no way of accessing the data. All I did was remove the hard drive from the laptop and insert it into the storage enclosure device, and away I went, full access again to all my data, just by plugging it into another desktop or laptop. There’s no complicated software to install on the computer, just plug it In and you can access the data as if it was on a flash drive.
There are no mains plugs involved, it use's a USB port from the desktop or laptop to power its self, and it also comes with a protective cover...

Maximising Storage
Review of NEWlink USB 2.0 IDE & SATA Hard Drive Enclosure by
trevorbrock
Advantages: Brilliant way of using spare hard drives
Disadvantages: a tight fit, with little ventilation
...WHY ?
"""""""""""
Why, you might ask, would anyone want a NEWlink USB 2.0 IDE & SATA Hard Drive Enclosure ? And even more to the point, why would such a person buy one, admit it and then go ahead and review it?
The answer my friend, is not blowing in the wind.! It was sitting on my shelf. It was a spare 80GB hard drive, that I had taken out of my PC when I put in a larger drive.
It annoyed me that this major investment when I first built my PC was now sitting idly by, giving me no return for my money.
Neither was there much point looking to dispose of it through Exchange & Mart, Ebay or the local shop window ads - who wants a redundant hard drive ? - especially when mine is SATA.
So for a little while, I had looked for an enclosure like this, into which I could place my hard disk, plug it into my USB and have an extra storage...

good but not amazing
Review of Iomega Zip 250 MB USB Powered by
JamieMckeen
Advantages: good portable storage
Disadvantages: bit expensive compared to a cd writer and media
...There's little doubt that the Iomega Zip drive is now the market leader in removable storage devices, ahead of its nearest rivals the LS-120 and Sony's HiFD drives. However the Zip's 100MB of storage has started to seem a little miserly given that the demand for capacity continues to rise - driven in part by the increasing use of graphics, video and sound files on the Internet and company-wide intranets. But the new Zip 250 has leapt ahead of its rivals, offering 250MB of storage, over 50MB more than Sony's HiFD super-floppy drive.
Like its predecessor, the Zip 250 is available in a variety of flavours, both internal and external, and with a choice of interface. The most popular of these will probably turn out to be the external drive, which is currently available with either a parallel port or a SCSI connection to the PC. A USB...

DVD-RAM a'lang a ding dong...
Review of Panasonic LF-D 201E by
shearerm
Advantages: Gigantic storage capacity, long shelf life for stored disks
Disadvantages: Not cheap, bit slow sometimes.
...) focus a bit more on the drive itself.
The main reason you would buy this drive as opposed to the lF-D103 is its capacity. It supports the newer bigger 9.4GB capacity DVD-RAMS. This is a huge amount of storage. Many of you reading this probably have less storage space on your entire computer.
Installation was a doddle whack it in an empty bay, connect to my SCSI card and reboot. Everything works first time, Panasonic (and I suppose Microsoft) doing what they ought to. There is one weird anomaly though, since the drive can handle cds and DVD-RAMs it appears in mycomputer twice, once as a cd drive and once as a removable hard drive. Still it does not seem to cause the pc any problems so I must not grumble too much. The drive can also handle ordinary dvds (properly known as DVD-ROMs) and PD (about which I know zip).
The software...

Top SCSI to USB Adapter
Review of Adaptec - USBXchange by
jonwhite
Advantages: Plug n play, reliable, efficient
Disadvantages: A bit pricy
...Finally, just when I was begining to give up on ever attaching my SCSI drive to my system, along came the answer to my prayers. A neat fitted in seconds, no need to open the case solution; the Adaptec USB to SCSI connector.
This piece of electronic genius allows you to connect virtually any SCSI device directly to your PC through its USB port. It works and is brilliant. It just plugs in and away it goes. Everything is supplied and with easy to follow directions.
It is not cheap though, expect to pay about $50 ($90) for it but compared with a SCSI card & cables it probably works out the same and is definately 100% less hastle than trying to configure an already stuffed full to the brim machine.
It's got my vote....
