Ways of life disappear when no-one is looking. For generations of provincial theatre- goers, trips to London or Stratford were less important than going to the local repertory theatre. For generations of actors, playing whatever parts they let you in a small company and prompting and dogsbodying was the way you learned your craft. Kate Dunn's study, based heavily on interviews with actors who went through that particular school of hard knocks, is particularly good on the way things worked--she spends a lot of time on the economics of management, the cheap costumes and the tiny salaries. Directors were often incompetent, pretentious, or drunk, or simply copying all the moves from French's Acting Editions of scripts; and yet good nights at the theatre often emerged anyway, and this is where many good directors learned their skills. Dunn is equally good at humanising the clichés--she has a particularly good, if perhaps rose-tinted, chapter on theatrical landladies, and their cooking. There are perhaps a few too many funny stories about costumes that fell apart, makeup that fell off, inaudible prompters and universal attacks of the giggles--faced with a wealth of good material, Dunn saw no reason to waste any of it. --Roz Kaveney

From 1959 to 1969, the Rank organisation made a series of short colour films for the cinema under the series title Look at Life. Look at Lifes were released on a weekly basis and shown in Odeon cinemas up and down the country. Ultimately over 500 films were produced, all of them shot on 35mm film and in colour. In William Shakespeare: An Illustrated Biography Anthony Holden makes intelligent use of the evidence that exists to produce a convincing portrait of the Stratford grammar schoolboy who travelled to London and became one of the most successful men of theatre of his day. The wealth accrued from this success eventually enabled him to purchase the largest house in his native town. But, like all previous biographers, Holden is inevitably fascinated by the missing evidence. The conventional wisdom is that hardly any direct documentary evidence of the life of Shakespeare has survived. In fact we know more about Shakespeare than about almost any other Elizabethan and Jacobean dramatist. However, since our interest in Shakespeare is so much greater than our interest in, say, his sometime collaborator Anthony Munday, we are more acutely aware of the missing evidence. Where was Shakespeare in the "lost years" of 1579-1587? Who were the real personalities lurking behind the people described in the sonnets? Like all previous biographers, Holden has his theories and is reasonably convincing when he claims, for example, that Shakespeare--product of a Catholic background--spent some of the "lost years" in the service of a leading Lancashire Catholic family. However, he does have a tendency to assume that intelligent, informed guesswork has been miraculously transformed by writing it down in a published biography into incontrovertible fact. None the less, this is, by someway, the best popular biography of Shakespeare available. In this illustrated edition Holden's text is wonderfully enhanced by a rich selection of images, ranging from 16th and 17th-century engravings to 18th and 19th-century paintings of scenes from the plays. --Nick Rennison

Filmed on location on the Great Eastern from 1986 to 2008 Section 1: Liverpool St - Colchester Firstly we see a Class 86 departing Liverpool St. We then depart on our Norwich bound service. The Class 86 is witnessed on both passenger and freight, passing most stations en route to our first calling point at Colchester. Section 2: Colchester - Ipswich A number of passenger and freight services are seen at Colchester before departing. Manningtree sees 86s at the head of Norwich bound trains as well as a service from Harwich International. At Ipswich Class 86s are viewed by night. Section 3: Ipswich - Norwich Many Class 86 arrivals and departures are seen at Ipswich before moving on to Stowmarket, Diss and finally Norwich. Section 4: Norwich - Ipswich A number of Class 90s are seen at Norwich before we join 90014 (back in August 1990). Diss and Stowmarket see more recent Class 90 activities. Ipswich also sees freight and light loco movements. Section 5: Harwich - Liverpool St Moving to Harwich we see 90024 departing. Most stations are visited between Manningtree and London and we watch passenger and freight Class 90s passing. Additionally we stop at Stratford. Back at Liverpool Street we return to Class 86 traction arrival.

This production evokes memories of the Anglia Region of British Rail since the 1970's, concentrating predominately on the lines from Liverpool Street and Fenchurch Street in the London area, out to Shenfield and Purfleet. We see Liverpool Street station before the rebuilding, carried out between 1986 and 1992, when long distance services, parcels and freight traffic, were diesel hauled by class 31, 37 and 47 locos. Stratford has always been a busy place to observe freight workings, many of which were in the hands of class 37 locos. The LNER desined class 306 Shenfield units are extensively covered, along with the classes 302, 305, 307, 309, 312, 315, 321 and 322 EMU's amongst others. DMU workings from Camden Road to North Woolwich are featured. Much o the programme was filmed with sound, and the distinctive noises of the Shenfield units are well captured. Later scenes show the preserved green unit 017 in passenger service in 2001, alongside Great Eastern branded class 315's. Also featured are class 86 and 90 electric locos, the Stansted Express, Electrostar, Desiro and class 170 turbo units.
