Stuttgart

Advantages: Great city
Disadvantages: It's far from here lol

...I recently spent 8 days in Stuttgart as part of an exchange, and really loved the city and all it had to offer. Most of what I loved about it was the other towns and places that they had in the area, which I will talk about in more detail below. *Stuttgart town centre* To be honest, I didn't spend a great deal of time in Stuttgart itself, although I did spend a long time in one of the many Starbucks they had. The main shopping street, Koenigstrasse, had many German shops as well as internationally known ones such as H&M, along with a handful of restaurants. I went to the art museum one day, which was right in the middle of town and easy to get to, and really enjoyed it. *Transport* One thing that really impressed me about Stuttgart was the public transport and how clean and reliable it was. I live in Newcastle upon Tyne...

One Day In Stuttgart

Advantages: nice city, nice surroundings
Disadvantages: the dialect of the people, but if you don't know German anyway, why bother

...Today we’re going to get to know Stuttgart, the capital of the Land Baden-Württemberg in the southwest of Germany which was founded 51 years ago, on 25th April 1952. Last year there were celebrations and festivities everywhere! Before that time it had already been the home of the Kings of Württemberg who, as it is the habit with kings, had castles built in the city and outside, so there’s quite a lot to see. We’ve met in the main train station which isn’t only a good starting-point for our tour, but also worth seeing in itself as it was built in the 1920s in the style of New Realism. The tower is 56 metres high topped by a rotating Mercedes star which signals to all people arriving what Stuttgart stands for worldwide: car industry! On the one hand the Swabians are very proud of their reputation as...

Stuttgart is a city of great beauty

Advantages: lots of parcs, woods, nightlife...
Disadvantages: ...

...First I´ve to say that I come from Stuttgart! Sorry, that my English is not as good as yours, but my Englsh teacher is not very good ;)! Stuttgart is the capital of Baden- Württemberg (That´s in South-Germany). Here live about 550 000 people. But nevertheless there are lots of parks and woods. Arround Stuttgart are hills. That´s very nice, because you can have a very great look on the city. I think you all know Mercedes and Porsche!? They both come from Stuttgart. If you want to go shopping, I would go to the Königsstraße (Kingsstreet). There are many shops and supermarkets... One ofe the greatest places in Stuttgart is the New Castle (das Neue Schloß)! There is a park before it, and in the summer you can see lots of people sleeping there. If you are a fan of nightlife, is Stuttgart the right place for you! Stuttgart...

Wine, Ballet & Arts or Beer,Benz & Sauerkraut ?

Advantages: Lots to do and to see for every taste
Disadvantages: none

...Let me introduce you to the city where I was born: Stuttgart, which is the capital of the German federal state of Baden-Wuerttemberg. Baden -Wuerttemberg itself was founded in 1952 and is a federation of the former duchy of Baden, the duchy of Hohenzollern and the former kingdom of Wuerttemberg. Now for all these, who don't know were on earth this place might be found on the map: Baden-Wuerttemberg is in the south-west of Germany, bordering to France in the west and Switzerland in the south. The natives of Stuttgart are called Schwaben (Swabians). You can recognize them easily as soon as they open their mouth. The Swabians have a very strong dialect and even if you've learned German to a higher degree, you might still find it hard to understand. Most of the younger generations and many of the older, are able to speak at least...

The People's Festival

Advantages: It's like Disneyland, but with beer
Disadvantages: Crowded public transport and hangovers

...It seems that German cities have festivals for everything. In Stuttgart, sauerkraut is being celebrated at the end of October, once the fairground and beer tents have been cleared away from the Cannstatter Volksfest ("the people's festival", originally a celebration of bringing in the harvest). In September they were praising the wine. The entire purpose of my trip to Stuttgart was to visit the Volksfest with my family. Having lived in Stuttgart for two years, and knowling the city intimately, they said that the best time for me to visit was during this 3-weekend period (from the last weekend of September to the 2nd weekend of October) when an enormous tarmac space by the Canstatter park is taken over by one of the biggest mobile fairgrounds in Europe and beer tents big enough to seat 5,500 people (each). Many of the large...

Porches, Mercedes and more importantly Beer

Advantages: Small is good for this festival
Disadvantages: What apart from a hangover??

...First off I am not going to claim that you are going to learn too much about Stuttgart itself from this review. If truth were told I could hardly remember half the time I spent in the City. That's not to say I didn't have a good time or enjoy the place - to the contrary. I shall explain. My reason for visiting this fine city was not to explore the shops of Koenigstrasse, climb the TV Tower or find out the inner workings of a Porsche or Mercedes for that matter. No the reason was the "Cannstatter Volksfest". Having decided around early summer we wanted a 'lads' trip to a beer festival Munich was naturally muted as the obvious choice. However the logistics of managing to book a hotel anywhere remotely near Munich made me look for other alternatives. It was at this point I heard about the Volkfest. The Stuttgart version happens...

Fly away from Stuttgart

Advantages: Well run German Airport
Disadvantages: Display screens not updated quickly enough

.... There are however plans to improve the rail network in Stuttgart and within the next few years the Stuttgart21 project hopes to open up a direct, high-speed link from the centre, to the airport and beyond to the rest of Germany. If you are driving there appeared to be ample parking and looking at the airports website, this appears to be relatively cheap although you would have to check when booking. There is also the usual plethora of rent-a-car companies such as Hertz, Avis etc. all of whom have desks in the terminal. WHAT TO DO THERE Waiting in airports can be one of the most boring experiences there is so what else there is to do is quite important. There is the usual array of shops that one would expect to find at an airport (perfume, clothes, alcohol etc) and these all looked to be well stocked. I didn't actually go in many...

A small town in Germany?

Advantages: Compact, cultured, loads to do
Disadvantages: Limited "old town", some may find it lacking vitality

...Bonn was the capital of the former West Germany (or Bundesrepublik in German) between1949 and 1990. It is the nineteenth largest (according to Wikipedia) city in Germany which says much about why it was chosen to be the new capital following World War Two; Konrad Adenauer, the post-war chancellor of the Bundesrepublik, was a local lad and he pushed for Bonn to become capital over Frankfurt, a city which was in a much better position to take on the role. Frankfurt already had many suitable buildings and a good infrastructure but Bonn won the day in spite of the added costs involved. Following World War Two, Germany was divided into four zones; this was done to satisfy the Allies who each had various claims on the territory and wished to protect their individual interests and the other reason was that it was believed that Germany needed...

A Little Piece of Germany in West Yorkshire

Advantages: Close to city centre and cathedral, work a quick visit
Disadvantages: Would be nice to have some bars/cafes

..."Little Germany" is the name given to an area of Bradford city centre near the cathedral in which a good number of German merchants lived and did business in the nineteenth century. These successful businessmen prospered in Bradford and built a number of rather impressive warehouses for their businesses ? primarily within the textile trade. What is particularly ironic is that in 1846 a young German tourist visited Bradford and subsequently wrote an article, perhaps for the Ciao of that era, in which he said " In Bradford, however, you think you have been lodged with the devil incarnate. If anyone wants to feel how a poor sinner is tormented in Purgatory, let him travel to Bradford". Still many of his compatriots were to arrive, and settle, in Bradford just a few years later. The area is still occupied by businesses but some...

Diamond review  A Rat-Infested Town in Germany

Advantages: Stunning architecture, lots of history
Disadvantages: Rats!

...I would imagine that everybody's heard of Hamelin, or to give it its more correct, German spelling, Hameln. At least, I should think everyone's familiar with the legend of The Pied Piper of Hameln. The town lies around 50km south of Hanover in the state of Lower Saxony, northern Germany. It straddles the Weser river and is the cultural and economic capital of the Weser area. In fact the town owes its prosperity through the ages to the Weser river and the trade that passed along it. This led to local merchants building some elaborately decorated houses which have survived to this day and are one of the main attractions of visiting here. Approaching Hameln you could be forgiven for wondering what the fuss is all about. A series of drab suburbs does nothing to excite the newly arrived. However, at the edge of the inner ring road...
