My boyfriend's mum is an Avon representative, so a few months ago when she gave me the latest catalogue I decided to give the Self Tan Spray a go. Why be white when you can be golden?

Advantages: sprays a fine mist all over the body with the added advantage of spraying every part of the body.
Disadvantages: I've never found any.

Advantages: Great colour and very even colour
Disadvantages: Takes time and alot of effort

..., and in my opinion looks a really natural colour. It?s great because if you want a really deep tan you can build it up by applying it on consecutive days but I have always found it to look dark after just one day. It is relatively un messy to use because its so thick it doesn?t drip on the floor like sprays can but you have to wash you sheets every time you use it and you do feel really sticky all evening with it on. Trust me you won?t be popping out anywhere once you?ve put it on, you will not want to be seen. It is relatively good value for money, depending on how much you use it. Fake tan is really high maintenance so be prepared to spend hours exfoliating and moisturising. St Topez Self Tan lotion

Advantages: Bottle last a long time
Disadvantages: Tan can wash off very easily

...When using this product you had to start in stages by doing a small section at a time. I found it was easier starting with the legs and spraying the product onto my leg then using an old sponge to spread it around as this product stains your hands terribly. It gave you a very good overall tan, although you needed to be sure you had covered all areas. I thought I had covered my feet an ankles well until the product had completely dried and I realised I had patches. I feel this is a good tanning product and the tan is very natural, however it washes off very easily and rubs of when near clothing. The bottle lasts a long time but dont quite feel it is worth the money as there is better products out there which are less hassle....

The best self tan around? I beg to disagree!

Advantages: Easy to see where you're applying it, quick drying.
Disadvantages: Obvious FAKE tan, messy application, too expensive.

...Self Tan Lotion, and I applied moisturiser (this time I used Palmers Cocoa Butter moisturiser) again before applying the fake tan to my knees and dry areas, but unfortunately I got the same result. The dark patches on my knees are finally becoming less noticeable, but I have sworn off St Tropez (at least this lotion) for the time being. However, I do recommend a new self tanner which I have tried, and that is Ella Bache Great Tan Without Sun. I'd heard it advertised and the lotion looked a lot like St Tropez which worried me. However, it was a lot easier to apply, even faster to dry and when I woke up the next morning and showered - I did indeed have a pretty natural looking self tan! I couldn't find anywhere on Ciao to review it, but if you live in Australia (I'm not sure if its available anywhere else) - I recommend it!]...

...Nivea Sun, Sun Touch, Caring Self Tan Spray 150ml for £5.99 from Semi Chem (However Superdrug sells at £8.99 and Boots at £6.99 -£7.50, depending on location) Every summer I apply fake tan whether or not I am going abroad. I find it gives a great base for a natural tan and hides your paler skin until it does tan for itself. I have always used a spray as I find these very easy to apply and have had disastourous results with creams in the past, although my mother uses creams all the time and they work great for her. I actually decided to buy the Nivea Sun Spray Tan because they no longer make the No17 version I used to use and this was the cheapest alternative. ...My first experience of St Tropez tanning mousse was approximately 2 years ago when I worked alongside the beauty section within a department store. As part of the promotion within the sunglasses section we all created the summer look, including the use of the St Tropez tan to create that gorgeous beach babe look. Well all I can say is I was very pleasantly surprised. My previous experience of Fake Tan using a pump spray from Garnier left me hideously orange, very much resembling an oompah-loompah from Charlie and the Chocolate factory. Needless to say I was very apprehensive about using fake tan after that point. Prior to tan application, I had to go through all the usual rigour of exfoliation, moisturising and general skin preparation.
