Your life needs a little SPARC
Review of Sun Ultra 5 360 - UltraSPARC IIi 360 MHz by sjhill

Advantages: Cheap entry level Sun SPARC from 1997
Disadvantages: Build quality is PC like, and low cache processors

...The Sun UltraSPARC 5 workstation was brought out in 1997, and was priced so you could have one on your desk for approx 1000 US Dollars. They stopped shipping to customers in May 2002. These days, it is not a fast machine, but still they are perfectly useable for many workstation and server tasks. Processor and Memory - This model has an UltraSPARC IIi processor which is, of course, 64 bit and is clocked at 360 MHz. You can have 1GB of memory in the workstation, installed as up to 4 DIMMS, which must be installed in pairs. "Normal" PC memory will not work in these workstations. The 260MHz model only has 256kB cache (same with the 270MHz processor) For better performance, you need the 2MB cache version on the 333 or 400MHz versions. Storage - There is one HDD bay in the machine, although if you remove the floppy drive, you can put... Read review

Strongly recommended
Review of Structured Computer Organization by Andrew S Tanenbaum by Deenie

Advantages: No previous knowledge of computing needed, excellent writing style.
Disadvantages: Price

...I am currently doing a Masters in Information Technology and this book was the recommended text for our Computer Network Systems module. Costing £32.99 I was expecting a good book, and as it turned out it is an excellent book and the investment was definately worth it. This book basically details the different levels that make up a computer, each one performing a specific function. The examples used throughout the book are the Pentium II, Sun Ultrasparc II and the Java Virtual Machine. Even if you are not studying a degree in computing but have a general interest in the way a computer works you will find this an excellent book that will teach you so much more than you would have expected to learn by such an enjoyable read. It is written in a very easy to read style - unlike many other computing books I have seen so far during my... Read review

As seen on Bond...
Review of Tarot of the Witches - Stuart Kaplan by thera_42

Advantages: Clear and easy to see.
Disadvantages: No pictures or help on the Minor Arcana, definitely not a beginner's deck. Some people won't like the artwork.

.... The Major Arcana: The Major Arcana is made up of 22 cards and in this deck they contain: 0 (unnumbered) The Fool – Portrayed by the typical court jester, here he is blindfolded, throwing away money, and about to walk off a cliff. I The Magician – Not much to say about this card, it’s a magician. II The High Priestess – Sat on her thrown with the sun, moon, and stars all represented about her. III The Empress – Holds the world in her right han d and a sceptre with the moon at its head in her left. IIII The Emperor – Holds the world in his left hand and a sceptre with the sun at its head in his right. V Hierophant – Shown sitting on the world…there’s a bird nesting in his beard ::shrugs:: don’t ask. VI The Lovers – Seen in a passionate embrace they are entwined by her hair. VII The Chariot – …small horses, small chariot, large man… VIII... Read review

NOT FROM WESTWOOD BUT IT'S WELL WORTH A LOOK
Review of Command & Conquer: Firestorm (PC) by davith38

Advantages: BRILLIANT INCLUSION OF NEW UNITS
Disadvantages: CAN CRASH THE GAME NOW & THEN BUT ON THE WHOLE IT;S GREAT

...desktop collection which includes animated cursers, desktop themes, music, startup&shutdown screens, icons, screen savers and wllpaper. A few nice little extra's include Res which allows you to play Tiberian Sun in resolutions above the 800X600 limit, plus there are two Mod editers so you can creat your own mods. This is not an official ADDON disk from Westwood but in my opinion it is well worth a look as it has everything the hardcore TibSun gamer could ever want. This disk will work on Windows 95,98,ME & NT. Minimum system requirements for this program are: · 486DX/66 processor, & Windows 95. Recommended system configuration includes: · P166 processor, · Windows 95 or better with DirectX 5, · 16Mb RAM, · sound card, & accelerated 2Mb video card.... Read review

A great add on
Review of Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun (PC) by Mrreview

Advantages: Plenty of challenging senarios and some new units
Disadvantages: requires a P266 prcessor to get the game to play well

...Firestorm, is the add on pack to the successful command and Conquer Tiberian Sun strategy game made by Westwood. For those of you that have played the other games in the series you will really appreciate the challenges and new units in this game. The terrains are similar to those in Tiberian sun but a lot of emphasis is placed on stealth and you need to make good use of all mobile radars so as not to get caught by surprise. I love this game and bought it 2 weeks ago and am still playing it now. I have played every Command and Conquer game and this one I estimate will keep me busy for at least another 6 or 7 weeks. The only minus point for the game is that it states the game can be run on a P166 processor. I have tried this on a friends machine and the game is a bit slow and jerky which gets annoying and spoils some of the enjoyment... Read review

Great stuff
Review of Star Office 5.x by burrowz

Advantages: Great software and free
Disadvantages: NOne

...I downloaded this from Sun and installed it easily. I was very impressed with the word processor and the database but my real favourit was the presentation software that I think is better than Poerpoint. It produces very good slide shows but when saved as HTML it then produces a useful slide show for use on the web. Companies can produce impressive web sites for nothing and without any expertise in HTML. If downloading is a bit expensive then I have seen it on Cover discs of magazines.(Computer Buyer March 2000). It is well worth having and files can be saved to match your office system. My only concern is that the people at Star Office just give it away! It's truly magic for free and if adopted by all British firms would save the economy millions and would certainly save individual firms and school thousands.... Read review

It's Microsoft Office, but free and portable!
Review of Star Office Writer by jonm2001

Advantages: It's free, and you can get it for virtually any OS
Disadvantages: Slooooooooowwwwwwww.........

...Sun StarOffice is an excellent full-featured office suite, with two defining characteristics; it?s free and it?s written in Java. The former is appealing for obvious reasons. Despite being just as good, if not better, than Microsoft Office (and fully compatible with it?s file formats), Sun has decided to give the entire suite away, including a word processor, spreadsheet, database, graphics program and more. The latter is a bit of a mixed blessing. Anyone who?s visited a web site only to be greeted with ?Starting Java...? will know how frustratingly slow Java can be. More specifically, it guzzles RAM - StarOffice typically uses at least 64Mb. However, it does bring the advantage that it can be used on virtually any hardware platform and any OS. I frequently use it on Linux at home. At this price, it?s probably worth giving... Read review

Stevo's challenge
Review of A-Z for Members Challenges by serza

Advantages: Its my dream home
Disadvantages: It doesn't actually exist... yet

...and what is it like? The house I live in I designed myself, of course! It is a cross between medieval and modern architecture, combining both the romantic and the practical elements every home should have. I.I.I.I I.....I I..U..I---------- I.....I\ I.....I...UUUU......I I...U.II I.....I..............................\ I.....I\ I.....I............................I I.U...I..I--I...UUUUUU........I-----I IIIoIII As we stand facing the house we see that the building has beautiful ivy climbing its walls. There is a tower to the left. This was my medieval inspiration. In the middle there is a big oak front door inviting us in. As we walk into the hallway we have a choice. We can either go upstairs...
