Everybody is surfing, Surfing USA...
Review of Surf's Up DVD by
missy0303
Advantages: Good CGI, Good children's film.
Disadvantages: Not enough adult humour.
...at the Pen Gu beach where the championship is taking place.
I don't want to reveal any more of the plot as to do so would give away some of the game, but Cody does make an enemy in the form of Tank Evans (Diedrich Bader) who has been the champion surfer for the past ten years since Big Z died in a competition!
Want to know what else happens…I suggest you go see this at the cinema or wait until mid September when it is due to be released onto DVD.
I thought this film was very cleverly made, as it was done in the form of a documentary which at times made the film feel a little slow, but also gave perfect opportunity for the viewer to find out a bit more about the characters in depth. The CGI (computer generated imagery) was fantastic in places, especially the surfing scenes and underwater! The way it was filmed gave the impression...

Surf Girls of Maui
Review of Blue Crush DVD by
BabyGirl
Advantages: Brilliant cinematography, great soundtrack, okay to watch as a time pass.
Disadvantages: Tendency to go all slow, quite monotonous, average performances, poor direction, very predicatable, thin plot.
...My brother came to see me recently and with him he had a bunch of films for me to watch (bless him). He knows I love teen movies (I’m the teen movie queen don’t you know!?) with a passion so in the pile was “Blue Crush”. Oh no, not the movie with that Bosworth chick, the one who’s going out with…sob Orlando Bloom! Well yes that’s the one. Day after day it was just sat on my DVD player, finally I decided I might as well watch it, it’s not like she’s gonna be snogging Orli in the movie or anything!
Anne Marie Chadwick lives in Hawaii with her two best friends Lena and Eden, and her rebellious little sister Penny. Anne Marie is a hardcore surfer chick who, after an accident is left with little confidence. Anne Marie has to prepare for a major competition approaching; she needs to practice, practice, practice but what one thing can...

Hard-Fi: Stars of DVD's
Review of Hard-Fi - In Operation DVD by
sbutler1
Advantages: Superb live band, awesome camera work and good bonus features
Disadvantages: Occasional Swearing!
...porn films- nothing quite beats being there! As good as the DVD is, I completely understand this saying and unfortunately there is no way that the atmosphere can be shown through the television (especially because I have been there!). However, the different camera angles and shots try to show the atmosphere as best as possible. There are shots of fans singing along to lyrics, taking pictures with their mobile phones, crowd-surfing and jumping up and down and having a good laugh. For me, it brings back fabulous memories of being right at the front in the middle at the Lease Cliff Hall, but for those that didn't go, I'm sure it will be quite disappointing that they couldn't go and experience it live.
Considering how hard it is to portray the atmosphere, I think it does it as well as it can do. 7/10

SURFS UP
Review of Surf Breaks, Croyde by
Chris_Padden
Advantages: Great fun, great exercise, Croyde is a good break, and a very nice summer resort to visit
Disadvantages: Can be dangerous if you are unfit, or unprepared
...I was lucky enough to be introduced to surfing at a very young age, living in the West Country where it’s easy to get to good quality, friendly surfing spots in reasonable time. I grew up on the North Devon coast; so playing in the water came naturally. At the age of 14 I was introduced to 'real' surfing, and haven't looked back since. Surfing, if you have the chance to do it is one of the best ways to keep fit and the feeling it gives you is just amazing, that you really need to try it for yourself. I would urge anyone just to give it a go, well worth it!
As a really young kid I started surfing the waves on a bogie or belly board. This is a short foam board of about 4 foot long. It is very buoyant, and you never stand up, just lie down chest down and catch the wave. Belly boarding is great, its cheap and easy to learn, and you...

Divine for DVD's!
Review of LG DVD 5253 by
carebare
Advantages: great picture and sound, great value, can play many different dics
Disadvantages: to use some features of more expensive players it needs to be hacked
...After much bugging by the hubby and children I finally gave in last year and bought a DVD player. I really wasn't too keen at first as we had so many films on VHS and that hardly ever got used, but I suppose you have to try these new things before you can judge them.
We looked around on a few websites to get an idea of the sort of thing available but we really did not know much so we did a little research. We found a great website called dvdrhelp.com (I will write an op on this at a later date)which listed all the things we wanted to know about and also what the technical jargon meant. After a few days we were pretty clued up so we went shopping.
We had surfed the net looking for the latest bargains and we came across this player in Dixons for £99.99, we thought that this was great value and we went along and snapped one up...

'The ocean just got cooler'
Review of Surf's Up DVD by
pmcds
Advantages: Great animation film
Disadvantages: Lacks Disney's edge
...Surf's Up is the 2007 animated film from Sony Entertainment. While it is hard to rival Disney Pixar and Dreamworks these days for animation films, Sony give it a good go here.
The Plot
The film centres around the annual Penguin Surfing Championships, in particular the Big Z Memorial Contest. Cody, a new participant on the circuit, travels from his home in Shiverpool in Antarctica to take part in the contest, and meets up with Chicken Joe, a surfing chicken, and Lani, a penguin lifeguard. He also meets The Geek, a washed up pro turned hermit who teaches him that winning isn't everything.
The Cast and Performances
There are some famous names providing voices for the characters here. Lead penguin (!) Cody is voiced by Shia LaBoeuf, and The Geek by Jeff Bridges. Lifeguard Lani is voiced by Zooey Deschanel, and Napoleon Dynamite...

Wigggly and Reid surf ace again
Review of Member Advice on Surfing the Internet by
wiggglypufff
Advantages: Educational, recreational, and loads of fun
Disadvantages: You might come across Angus
...Well another day, another play! I am delighted to complete my hat-trick of joint opinions with Karen, and we carefully selected (!) surfing the Internet as our crème de la crème; actually it was the only one that we could think of that Karen knew less about than me :o(
As most people on here can probably surf the Net to a competent level, we decided not even to attempt to make a techie opinion, but more a light-hearted look at the activities of enthusiastic amateurs like ourselves.
Surfing the Internet! What exactly does it mean? Visions of a fat bloke in boxers standing on the ironing board while tapping in web site addresses springs to mind, but that is however a general misconception.
Below, I will give you a beginners guide to surfing the Internet. Karen, (Wiggglypufff) will fill you in on the stuff I forget!!!

Surf Or Die
Review of Surfwise DVD by
sghawken
Advantages: Compelling documentary about an unusual man
Disadvantages: At times very graphic in its dialogue
...Every morning Dorian "Doc" Paskowitz gets up and carries out a stringent exercise regime, using elements of Yoga and similar meditational based exercise. Having completed this work out he heads for the beach where he picks up his surfboard and catches some great waves. You might think this is nothing unusual, but when I tell you that Doc is 84 it might give you reason for a little more thought. Surfwise is a documentary that focuses on the unconventional life of Doc, his love of surfing, and how he packed up his family of 11 in a 21 foot mobile home and travelled the US looking for the best adventures he could find for him and his family.
I watched open mouthed at the exploits of this man, his behaviour as an 84 year old was far less conservative than mine a man nearly a third his age, to be honest he was possibly more fit than me...

Reef surf school.
Review of Surfing in Penzance by
lynseyward
Advantages: Great location - centre of Newquay. Day surfaries to Penzance
Disadvantages: If you stay at surf lodge can be noisy.
...Reef Surf School
Learning to surf can be quite a daunting experience, so when we first decided to learn we chose to have lessons with one of Newquay's well know surf schools. Reef surf school has BSA approved instructors and the school is open 12 months of the year. They also have the reef surf hostel that you can stay at the lodge and have surf lessons for a special package deal such as £49. The hostel comprises of flat screen tvs and cd players to make you feel at home. The lodge has many facilities including a bar that has special events and DJ's and they serve good food. The hostel can be found at Reef 10 - 12 Berry Road telephone number 01637 879058. This number will also put you through to the surf centre.
The reef surf centre is right on the Great Western beach at the centre of Newquay and also has a beach café overlooking...
