A decent surfing game for the WII

...Surf's Up is a WII game based on the animated film of the same name. It's a decent game and a pretty good interpretation of the movie, which features surf-boarding penguins. The whole game is based around surf-boarding, though there is also a bonus game where you have to slide down a track on a leaf - obviously this has certain similarities with the main game, but it does have a different feel to it. There are several characters to choose from - in fact, all the main characters from the film. Each surfer has his own range of abilities including speed and freestyle ability, and there is a selection of boards which also add to or detract from your different abilities. As you progress through the game there are lots of different things you can unlock, mainly new characters and boards. You can also add new songs to your track list...

...This review is for the Nintendo DS game, Surf's Up, developed and published by Ubisoft. As the title suggests, the game is a surfing game where you can learn to surf and perform tricks. The Surf's Up game was released across a number of consoles and the PC at a similar time, so this is a very wide release. When this happens, very often developers tend to take short cuts with the game, and tend to focus less on the features and advantages of each console. Unfortunately, they appear to have made a similar mistake with this game. The game is really a racing game, although you can perform various tricks. You race around various locations, and whilst performing tricks, you also have a range of weapons to shoot and hinder the other racers in the game. The 3D graphics which are used in the game are impressive, and the game is easy to pick up...

Everybody is surfing, Surfing USA...

Advantages: Good CGI, Good children's film.
Disadvantages: Not enough adult humour.

...My children and I went out to the local leisure centre today fully intending to go ice skating, unfortunately for them, I twisted my ankle on the way there (I have a weak ankle due to an accident a few years ago) and so skating was completely out of the question as children under 8yrs old must be accompanied by an adult on the rink. So to make it up to them both (who were extremely disappointed as they both love ice skating) we decided to go to the local cinema instead. There were a few films showing that were suitable, Harry Potter, The Simpsons, Bratz movie (son was not amused when I suggested this lol) and Surf's up. As we had already seen the Simpsons, and Harry Potter we opted for Surf's up by default. Surf's up is an animated cartoon film with a slight difference in that it is filmed to look like a documentary...

SURFS UP

Advantages: Great fun, great exercise, Croyde is a good break, and a very nice summer resort to visit
Disadvantages: Can be dangerous if you are unfit, or unprepared

...I was lucky enough to be introduced to surfing at a very young age, living in the West Country where it’s easy to get to good quality, friendly surfing spots in reasonable time. I grew up on the North Devon coast; so playing in the water came naturally. At the age of 14 I was introduced to 'real' surfing, and haven't looked back since. Surfing, if you have the chance to do it is one of the best ways to keep fit and the feeling it gives you is just amazing, that you really need to try it for yourself. I would urge anyone just to give it a go, well worth it! As a really young kid I started surfing the waves on a bogie or belly board. This is a short foam board of about 4 foot long. So, why choose Surf Tablets? PACKAGING – the packaging is excellent. A compact box which holds the round tablets. They are colourful, as well – Sun Fresh is a lovely tangerine colour. The boxes are easy store – they do not take up too much precious cupboard space. SMELL – They leave your clothes smelling very good. You know like how your mum always could get them smelling! Surfin'

Advantages: fun enough film
Disadvantages: not for everyone

...Yes, I don't have kids, so what am I doing reviewing this? Thesedays I try to watch quite a few films, and pretty much any film that end up on Sky Anytime, I will probably give a go to. Not all of them have been good (look out for my review on The Cottage at some point - worst film I think I have ever seen!), but it is just convenient them being there for you to watch when you want. ...I have never seen the Surfs Up feature length animation, nor had I ever had any intention to so why I decided to rent this game in the first place is beyond me. Whilst looking at the titles on offer I noticed this game and picked it up. Maybe it was the attractive looking box (I have always had a love for water), maybe it was just a ?slip of the hand?
