Choosing a surround sound system
Review of Member Advice on Choosing a Hi-fi by
C_W_Monkey
Advantages: Good cinema sound
Disadvantages: Many systems "mis-sold"
...for a high price because they can claim to be "surround sound" and people just accept it. This used to happen a lot with Pro-Logic systems where people assumed that just because it has 5 speakers means it's proper cinema sound. But any film made after Batman Returns uses a far more sophisticated system.
------------------------------------
What's out there?
------------------------------------
The industry moved very fast in creating new ways to put sound into movies. Some formats lasted less than a year before being replaced whilst others were outdated before they were even released. Some were downright stupid. Rather than take you through a full history of Dolby, ILM & several smaller company's formats (of which there are tens if not hundreds of different standards) I will just take you through what is available today in home cinemas. I...

Top sound system for the money
Review of Cambridge SoundWorks FourPointSurround FPS1600 by
Timski
Advantages: Excellent sound - Great price
Disadvantages: Tripods are a bit flimsy
...The FPS1000 speaker system isn't the best setup in the world, it has to be said, but with the correct sound card, I own a Creative Sound Blaster Live 5.1 Player, the sound at even a quarter of the possible volume is plenty for everyday use. Crank the volume up for those dance tracks you've just downloaded and you get the impact of a full-blown stereo system. Friday nights allow you to annoy the neigbours when you take the decibels up to the max. The distortion is minimal and the sound is awesome.
The four speakers are small in comparison to complete stereo or surround sound systems but they pack a hidden punch, this combined with the excellent sub-bass woffer which is placed centrally all give this sound system unstoppable, ear pounding volume.
It is all very simple to set up and the only down side is that the cables are a little...

Cinematic 5.1 Surround Sound, Home Threatre System
Review of JVC THS5 by
yoshi64534
Advantages: Very nice clear sound, loads of inputs avaliable, Timer options
Disadvantages: Does not have and front and rear input, No clock
...- RWs, CD-Rs, and normal Audio Cds. The video formats that are compatible include: SVCD, VCD, DVD-RW, DVD-R, and DVD. The DVD player has a headphone jack on the front ideal for late-night viewings or films or games un-suitable for younger audiences. Finally the system has built In Decoders, Pro Logic II, DTS, and Dolby Digital. The surround sound supported are Pro Logic II, DTS and Dolby Digital.
Overall I rate this system very highly both for the superb cinematic style sound quality and the many extras that comes with it. This is Home Theatre System is ideal for any home lounge or room in the house. Versatile, high quality and great style this system is very good value for money.
Thanks for reading, oh and don't just rate my review helpful because everyone else has I've changed it since then.. =)...

DVD surround sound system with plenty of features
Review of LG LH-T250 by
peteyl
Advantages: Good choice of inputs
Disadvantages: Hard to control individual components
...Had it since december of last year and nothing has gone wrong on it.
The surround sound system is made up of 5 small speakers each with equal power, and a subwoofer.
The DVD player has a built in radio allowing AM and FM radio, and the FM radio has RDS so everytime the news and weather is broadcasted on other stations it automaticly changes station. The PTY funciton allows you to chose a genre of music and it will search for a radio station playing that genre. However with both of these features there must be a good number of FM stations around for it to be effective.
As soon as the DVD player is put on, its usualy set to radio and the sound mode is usualy set to 'bypass', sound only comes out of one speaker, so i have to change the mode to get the setting where sound comes out of all of them which is rather annoying everytime i...

Surround Sound
Review of Panasonic - Panasonic Home Theatre Sound System by
rjpickett
Advantages: Five disk mulitplayer, multi function DVD player, no londer any need for a hi fi, the size of a video
Disadvantages: With my video, digital cable tv box and DVD player I had to buy a new TV cabinet
...I recently purchased the Panasonic Home theatre System, with full surround sound and DVD player. It has a 5 disk multi changer, radio, tv, vcr and aux inputs. I comes with 5 quality speakers and sub woofer, which for their small size give an excellent sound quality. I have actually for the front stereo left and right bought two Tannoy floor mounted speakers. I must say it is like being at the cinema with full surround sound. Seeing and hearing this product is believing. I was convinced to buy this product when I watch the BMW scene in the car park from the James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies. You see it at full volume and maximum bass, and you'll want the system....

Top Marks for This All-in-one Home Cinema System
Review of Sony DAV-S880 Integrated DVD/SACD HiFi System by
cmathan
Advantages: Excellent audio settings, easy to navigate remote, powerful speakers, very stylish design, sound quality's incredible
Disadvantages: not enough scart connectors and only 1 optical connector.
...This system is incredible. There are various audio settings to suit all movie types. The digital sound that comes from this system is crystal clear and there is enough scope for volume that you can have it as loud as you like and still have room for more if you wanted. The design is very sleek and stylish and will compliment any room. The speakers are especially well designed - no need to nail them to the wall | | |
