Good diving, Great place
Review of Barbados (Dive Sites) by
jambo6
Advantages: Barbados is a great place
Disadvantages: The diving is good, but not fantastice
...bothered with wet suits.
The Stavronikita is a good dive that I would like to have done several times. The visibility was poor for most our dives by Barbadian standards (12-15m), because they’d had nine days of rain prior to our arrival. This meant we didn’t see the submarine, which apparently visits regularly. The dive operators that sank the Stav planned out seventeen different penetration dive routes on her. We did number one, the baby route with a maximum depth of 30m, but it still involved enough penetration to be quite exciting.
On the dive following this, “Clark’s Reef”, (After a 50-minute surface interval) we racked up an 11-minute decompression stop according to my Suunto Favor (Dive computer). I don’t have a problem with deco diving, but it seemed a bit inappropriate as some of the divers had fairly limited experience although...

It is all on the wrist
Review of Suunto D6 by
atticusuk
Advantages: Small with a clear display
Disadvantages: Bit pricey.
...Sometimes lady luck just happens to smile down on you and just recently she has smiled on me twice with regards to winning things one of which was the Suunto D6 dive computer which at a retail price of £470 is a pretty decent prize to win. I was tempted to sell it straight on as I already have a dive computer which I'm really happy with and that meets my diving needs as it has two gas settings for when I dive with Nitrox gas. However the benefit of the Suunto was that it is a small watch style computer and therefore would be slightly lighter and less bulky when travelling abroad on holiday and as a golden rule of scuba diving is to always factor in potential kit failure and have a back up I decided to keep it and boy am I glad that I did.
Basically the D6 is the same as the D9 however it does not have the radio linked receiver...

Replacing Luck
Review of Suunto Gekko by
rosehall
Advantages:
Disadvantages:
...SUUNTO "GEKKO" DIVE COMPUTOR
After getting into scuba diving this was the first piece of equipment that I purchased. I bought it at Male airport in the Maldives for £130 about 15 months ago.
Description
The "Gekko" is an ideal choice for divers who do not require PC interface or simulation features. The "Gekko" is suitable for both air and nitrox and is designed to give specifics of any diving situation including decompression at a glance. Both ascent rate and available no-decompression time are displayed graphically with clear, colour coded indicators. A feature which I really like is the visual and audio alarms given when necessary. Maximum depth and dive time alarms can be enabled too.
It's extremely simple to operate with easy to use buttons and a straightforward menu. It also has an extensive logbook which stores up to 50...

Suunto Vector Black Negative face
Review of Suunto Vector X-Black Outdoor Computers by
sasco05
Advantages: Light weight, good features if calibrated properly. Rugged.
Disadvantages: Quite big, but it does do a lot to be fair!!!!
...Spent some time looking for a good outdoor watch with Altimeter, Compass and Barometric Pressure etc.. The Vector hits all those and so far seems pretty accurate. The compass once calibrated properly is accurate to within 3-5 degrees, one nice feature is the levelling bubble on the face that allows you to get a more accuarte reading. A big watch in terms of circumferance but really light weight you will not notice it on your wrist after a few minutes.
The Altimeter is pretty good but you do need to update it quite regularly, the best way to do this is to put the height in to the Altimeter, being one of the older watches in the suunto range it doesn't have the function as some of the newer one s do of being able to freeze the altimeter mode when at home and leave it in Barometer mode and then switch to Altimeter when out hiking, but i...

Not all Mosquitos need bug spray
Review of Suunto Mosquito by
scuba_angel
Advantages: small and light
Disadvantages: pc interface isnt as tough as it could be
...Mosquito is definately one of my best investments as far as my diving equipment is concerned and I just hope that the replacement model is as good.
Currently as it is a discontinued model you cant buy direct from Suunto but roho are selling it via their webshop for £225. The pc interface costs either £33 for the serial port version or £55 for the USB version....

The only dive computer you will ever need
Review of Delta P Technology VR3 by
wreckferret
Advantages: Does the lot.
Disadvantages: Not a lot.
..., the unit went to Horsea Island (Portsmouth) for a brackish session of measuring the depth at which jellyfish congregate and it worked uncomplainingly all the way into the night on some more dry dives before I remembered to wash it.
EXPERIENCES
Further deeper forays into the wet and murky in and around our fair isles has led me to believe that, so far, the unit is solid and dependable. It has withstood the 'ferret's typical hamfisted behaviour: several accidental droppages, clankings against stage cylinders and general unintentional mistreatment, without affecting its operation. In that respect, it’s been flawless. It’s even been in Kev’s pot for a depth test along with various other instruments, as it consistently measured 1m shallower than my heretofore loyal Suunto Vyper (another dive computer, for the uninitiated). The Vyper’s now going...

Dive In At The Deep End!
Review of Sinai Dive Club by
Jamie73
Advantages: Easy acess to hotel, coral reefs onsite, friendly staff, good prices
Disadvantages: None
...We have just returned from our holiday in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt and when we booked the holiday we decided to do our PADI Open Water Dive certification at the same time.
We decided on staying at the Hilton Sharks Bay Resort as it has the Sinai Dive School on the site with easy access to the sea from a jetty.
The Sinai Dive School
The dive school is situated at the bottom of the Hilton site complex and is an easy walk to get there, about 5- 10 minutes from main reception. This school is PADI registered and has just celebrated its 20 year anniversary this year.
Layout of Dive Club
The main entrance to the School is adjacent the Sunset Bar on the far extent of the site. It has very good disabled access to the front and rear of the school and this is very handy for us abled bodied too as when you are hot and got all your...

Northern Diving
Review of Scotland (Dive Sites) by
jambo6
Advantages: Loads of wrecks, varied and interesting diving on offer
Disadvantages: Cold, far north
...As I live in Shetland and also visit Orkney when the chance arises, I’ve written an opinion mainly about the diving in both groups of islands. As a bit of background I’ve done about 130 dives in Shetland and 30 in Orkney. There’s also some tourist information at the end, because most people wouldn’t come this far purely to dive. The diving up here on the edge of the map is fantastic, and there's plenty to see and do as well, so please read on and see what you think.
THE DIVING - SHETLAND
Shetland, if you weren’t aware, is situated to the extreme far north of Scotland, 50 miles to the North of Orkney. Although the mainland is only 70 miles long, it has about a thousand of miles of coastline, due to the number of Voes (mini fjords) and smaller islands, over 100 in total. An interesting fact I...

Are we Anphibians try diving with PADI
Review of PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) by
johnny760
Advantages: Dive centres all over the world
Disadvantages: An expensive sport to be involved in but its worth it.
...Hi All
Well where I begin with this one. I was first bitten by the diving bug back in 2000; oh those long distant care free days ago. It was our first holiday together Karen and I, and we neither of us had ever been to Turkey before. We had found an inexpensive two week deal to the resort of Marmaris. An excellent location we were to find for what would be our new hobby.
After attending the customary welcome brief, we were both drawn to the Try Dive which was been offered with a local company. After some research and investigation we signed up with EDC the European Dive Centre. The main reason we booked with this particular company it was registered provided certified insurance and had mainly English/European diving instructors. A point to note safety is paramount in the sport and if you are intending to take the PLUNGE...

Some of the Best Diving in the World
Review of Cayman Islands (Dive Sites) by
petehall
Advantages: Marine reserve. Fantastic visibility. Vast array of sea life.
Disadvantages: High cost of living and little to do apart from diving.
...Sharks, turtles, sting rays, manta rays, moray eels, baracuda, they've got the lot. The entire Cayman Islands area is a marine reserve, and no-one is even alowed to drop anchor there. Every 100 metres around the islands you will find buoys to tie up to. These have been carefully fixed into the sea bed so that the corals don't get damaged by anchors. Consequently, the coral is second to none - the best I've seen anywhere in the world. This also means that there is a stunning array of sea-life, including some of the most colourful and unusual fish you could wish to see.
Grand Cayman's coast is divided into a number of distinct areas by the local dive leaders, each with a name to identify it. These areas may be grouped into three main groups - West Coast, South Coast and North Coast, the east, I gather, is shallower and less...
