Sweden! a lttle taste of Paradise!

Advantages: Clean, clean, clean!!! friendly locals, good transport, beautiful atmosphere-natural and cultural
Disadvantages: Expensive

...I don't know, but I've always had a great desire to go to Sweden. Scandanavia has always been so appealing...so different and interesting! And my wish came true back in April when i finally got on the plane with 3 of my friends, heading for Sweden! It was cold leaving London...rainy and completely miserable! And leaving to go to a famously known cold country....we expected bitterly cold weather. So we packed loads of winter clothes, only to find that when we got there, it was about 25 degrees...such beautiful warm weather, and that's how it stayed pretty much for the 4 days we were there for. When we landed, we'd already fallen in love with Sweden even though it was the first time any of us had ever been there. There was forest everywhere and no carrier bags flyinf about or anything! Sweden is probably one of the cleanest...

Southern Sweden Adventure

Advantages: see review
Disadvantages: a lot of rain

...My boyfriend and I currently live in Sweden (see my review 'Living in Sweden' if you want to know why!) and for 7 days this summer we decided to head off on an adventure driving and camping along the south coast of Sweden. I have a trusty Rough Guide book of Sweden which has been like a bible whilst living here, as I am constantly referring to it. Before we left for our trip I had a read through to check which places we should visit along the way, but other than that we had no idea of where we would be going and what we would see?. So come and join us on our 'Southern Sweden Adventure 2005' as we seemed to keep calling it for some reason!! There are photos and a map below too. **Day 1** We were supposed to set off early but after we had hauled all of our bags of camping gear, boxes of food, clothes, deckchairs, BBQ etc down...

Diamond review  Wi not trei a holiday in Sweden this yer?

Advantages: Lots of lovely museums, pretty trees, beautiful islands and buildings
Disadvantages: Expense of food and alcohol

..., there?s a display of 17 types of shoe found from Mediaeval times, there are partial boats, skulls, bones and the like, the occasional bit of armour, and an exhibit about the development of books in Sweden. It?s very interesting, but has one major disadvantage to the English visitor: very few of the labels have English translations, especially as you get further into the museum. It appears completely random what has an English translation and what hasn?t, and most of what English there is is very brief compared to the huge reams of Swedish, though the book exhibit appears to have an almost word-for-word translation. 70kr for adults, free for 7-17 year olds. Skansen: Skansen is more fun than you can possibly imagine. It?s an open air museum which was founded in 1891, and claims to be the oldest and largest in the world. It has over 150...

Review of Stockholm (Sweden)

I love you Sweden

Advantages: Beautiful, inexpensive to get there via Plane (£159 return for me from Manchester)
Disadvantages: Expensive once you get there, slightly offset by strength of the pound though

...So what did I think of Sweden ***************************** In a word, beautiful. In many words I will describe further :-) The most noticable thing for me was just how nice everything was. The naturally beautiful surroundings and beautiful fields as far as the I can see were truly a sight to behold. The startling lack of vandalism also took my attention. In Chester where I live and I suspect the majority of Britain (99%) Vandalism is a major problem. In Sweden where I visited Lund, Malmo and some other places I only seen a few bits of vandalism. Even that was not major. Graffiti was rare as was dropped litter, I was very impressed by their cleanliness that is for certain. Crime also seemed very low, no gangs of unruly teenagers were to be found either. I felt very safe walking through the streets. Another...

Oscar Wilde's obsession with books

Advantages: Full of fascinating information about Wilde's life and love of books
Disadvantages: None really, except maybe best enjoyed by those with some prior knowledge of Wilde

...The controversial Victorian playwright and poet Oscar Wilde, so the introduction to this book tells us, ?devoured and luxuriated in books?. He had a lifelong thirst for reading, so it?s not surprising to find that his house in Chelsea was packed with them. Not only was he an avid collector, but he was also an accomplished speed reader with a remarkable ? and to some extent photographic ? memory which helped him to absorb and recall instantly vast amounts of prose and verse. As a reviewer for the Pall Mall Gazette, he could master a book's content, plot or argument in minutes. (If only ciao had been around in those days as well). Maybe it is only fair to get the one major chink in his armour out of the way quickly. Once, when he was preparing a lecture on the poet Chatterton, most of his notes were made up of entire pages and paragraphs...

A Book Lover

Advantages: Well-drawn characters. Creative use of words.
Disadvantages: A little difficult to adjust to the changing style of writing

...The Book Thief written by Australian author Marcus Zusak was published in Australia in 2005 as an adult novel and in America in 2006 as a children?s novel. It finally came to the UK in 2007 published by Doubleday and Black Swan in both adult and teen-age versions. Though I have to admit, I do not know what the differences between the two versions are! My copy and the one I am reviewing is the adult version. The novel proved to be a triumphant success greeted by glowing accolades from a wide range of literary reviewers ? excerpts of which can be found in the book. The most apt from The Irish Examiner, ?A peculiar tale, whose deceptively plain language and cryptic style describe the most profound of human emotions and the most hideous of human actions . . . an unusual and compelling novel? Set in Nazi Germany during the Second World...

Tweenies Book

Advantages: children will enjoy it
Disadvantages: none unless your child wants you to read it about 10 times a day

...I got this book from a book club for my eldest and now my youngest likes to look at it. It's a hard back book with each page inside being double thin card so that the pull out pictures are fitted in the middle of them. The book is called 'Come Back Colours' because Doodles (The red dog) has lost its colour and so have all the Tweenies toys. The front cover has a picture of the youngest Tweenie Jake and the colourless Doodles, when you open the book you see a picture of the other Tweenies (Milo, Bella and Fizz) on the opposite page is Jake with his special cape opening his arms to the colourless Doodles. The story starts ' One day, Jake put on his special coloured cape.' His job was to look after the colours but where have Doodles colours gone? Jake comes to the rescue waves his arms and says 'Colours come and colours go...

All about Sweden

Advantages: Beautiful country, beautiful women!
Disadvantages: The beer is too expensive!

...I go to Sweden every other month as my girlfriend lives there. I have been there about 10 times now. Sweden is a lovely country to visit, I can certainly recommend it. You'll find Sweden is cold in the winter, especially if you visit the East, or the North, however it has good summers, probably better than we have in the UK. My knowledge of Sweden does not yet extend to the North. Most Swedes can speak English, so you don't need to worry about not being able to communicate with the locals! There is some lovely countryside in Sweden as well as several large and exciting cities. In the country you're free to walk or camp on public land, more or less wherever you like. The country has many lakes, which make popular spots for swimming in the summer, as well as some rocky landscapes and forests not too dissimilar to UK ones in terms...

Book Heaven

Advantages: Price, amazing offers, points
Disadvantages: Only one, see below

...If you love books and enjoy a good bargain, then look no further! The Book People are exactly what you need. Now, this isnt your 'usual' type of book club, like World Books for example, you will not be expected to buy a certain amount of books per year and you will not be sent books every month which you have to send back or pay for. When you join, all you will be sent is a thin brochure which shows a selection of the books they offer at fantastic prices. That is it. Read on for more amazement! The key features are: The books are cheap (examples below) The books are good quality You earn 1 point per pound spent and these can be saved up and redeemed for books. This can be done when ordering from both the catalogue and online. 75 points = £2.99, 100 points = £3.99, 125 points = £4.99 Usually free postage and packaging...

The Book With No Plot

Advantages: It's different...
Disadvantages: Not terribly cohesive, too many characters and sub-plots.

...This was a very strange book and one that I picked up as I was intrigued by the title and the fact that the author was Anonymous. According to the blurb on the back of the book this was originally self-published on the internet. The plot centres around (unsurprisingly) "The Book With No Name" - a book which if read leads to the death of the reader. I thought this sounded quite interesting but the mysterious book is not as central as you would assume from the premise. The other main plot focus is on the retrieval of a precious stone known as "The Eye of the Moon". This stone is rumoured to have magical powers and is guarded by a group of monks known as Hubals who live on an island. The book is set in Santa Mondega, a town that is a dangerous place to live and one that is conveniently forgotten about by the rest of the country. We are...
