Review of Avocent DSR 2010 - KVM switch - 16 ports by
Calldean
Advantages: Remote access even when rebooting
Disadvantages: Can't power down/up, terrible quality of image at times
...Sorry, I know this is a bit of an odd one and that most people probably won't have a clue as to what this thing is, or what it does, but I was bored and hadn't written a review in a while so I thought I would put my time to good use at work and write this op!
What is it?
***********
The Avocent DSR 2010 is what's known as a digital KVM, or Keyboard, Video and Mouse. It's a black box, which is about 43cm long (Without mounting brackets, 48cm with them) into which you plug a mouse, monitor and keyboard. For the techies out there it's 1U. Along the front are 17 green lights and 17 orange lights and the name of the box (ASR 2010) to the far right. Nothing too exciting.
Round the back is a little more interesting, but no better looking.
Depending on the model you have bought you can have up to 16 ports in two rows. Each port...

Reversal of Fortune, Recovery of Faith
Review of Silas Marner (The Weaver of Raveloe) - George Eliot by
frkurt
Advantages: Good story, good characters, representative of the genre
Disadvantages: The unexplained disappearance of Dunstan that doesn't get explored
...George Eliot, born Marian Evans in 1819, spent most of her early life in rural Warwickshire. This early upbringing is apparent from her easy comfort in writing about country settings, with attention to detail and niceties that a born-Londoner would generally not be able to provide. Eliot's life was not that of the typical Victorian lady; she worked in publishing, including periodicals, translations, and writing her own fiction. Eliot led a 'colourful' life; living in a common-law marriage with Lewes, a man who left his wife and children for her, she then married after his death a man twenty years her junior, only to die eight months later.
Silas is a weaver, a rather grumpy and sour man, whose primary occupation and avocation is the making of money. He is an outsider in Raveloe, having been driven from his earlier community...

...health. I smoke one with a recessed filter myself.
After my bomb avocation, I became the organizer of the supercolossal fruit roll. You could only do this at Wednesdays because that was the only day they sold old apples in the cafeteria. Sick, undernourished, antique apples. They sold old oranges an Fridays, but they weren't as good because they don't make muck noise when you roll them. But an Wednesdays when I knew there was going to be a substitute teaching one of the classes, I'd pass the word at lunch and all the kids in that class would buy there scrawny apples. Then we'd take them to class and wait for the right moment, like when the substitute was writing an the blackboard. You couldn't depend an a substitute to write an the blackboard though, because usually they just told you to take a study period so they didn't have to do any...

Increasing obscurity...
Review of The Most Obscure Book I've Ever Read by
frkurt
Advantages: It is good to remember obscure texts
Disadvantages: It is sad that some texts go out of print...
...books on how to learn hieroglyphs as refreshers (four such other texts, each of which has merits) but 'Egyptian Grammar' by Gardiner remains a standard bearer of hieroglyph study.
If you are truly interested in learning Egyptian hieroglyphs for an upcoming trip to Egypt or to visit a museum with a collection (I amazed a friend once by being able to read an inscription at the museum; I confessed that of the hundreds of 'paragraphs' of hieroglyphs in the collection, that that was one of only two I could decipher without my notebook), this text might not be the first choice. However, if you are serious about studying hieroglyphs and think it might become a lifelong avocation or even professional study, this is the text to get.
Now in its third edition, the Gardiner text has been continually updated since its first publication in 1927 (the...
