...Chanel No. 5 will always remain a controversial perfume. Although used and praised for decades it's still a love or hate fragrance. I think it's because of aldehydes, the most important constituents of this fragrance. They possess a waxy, fatty smell that often makes think on washed and dried clothe. Aldehydes are found in nature (for example in a citrus peel), but never in amounts used in Chanel No. 5. That makes this smell a bit unnatural from one side, but it also gives an interesting exotic twist. In my opinion EDP is much softer than EDT version - the aldehydes are less sharp and the floral bouquet is more prominent. On my skin it starts with a fresh citrus note that slightly fades into a floral hart of orange blossom, rose and jasmine. An ultimate feminine bouquet, but modernized with waxy sharpness of the aldehydes...

...How do you write a useful opinion on a perfume for someone who?s never smelt it? The answer is you probably can?t, but I?ll try anyhow. Firstly and most important, if you?ve never tried Chanel No5, DO NOT BUY IT UNTIL YOU?VE TESTED IT. This may seem a bit pedantic but I?m only telling you so you don?t waste your money buying a perfume which, when worn, may not suit you. I love the smell of Coco in the bottle, but whenever I try to wear it, it smells like cat pee. That?s the thing with perfumes. They really do smell different on different people. Now, why should you buy, or even test No5? Because it?s classy. It has no specific age range (i.e. it?s not old woman?s perfume. You know which I mean.). MAHLER CREATED THIS ON HOLIDAY - SYMPHONY NO.4

Advantages: Varied movements, esp. 1st and 4th. One of Mahler's most popular works.
Disadvantages: 2nd movement a little weak.

It is at the beginning fast-paced before tailing off into to calm and hopefully leaving you in that state. --- CONCLUSION --- Like so many classical scores these days it can be found very cheaply. In fact I have recently noticed many reductions in prices of classical labels, including HMV's own (down from £4.99 to £2.99 for some very popular classics) and 5 CD's for £20 on the Naxos label. I would consider the first and last movement of Mahler's symphony no.4 to be the most worthwhile, while the middle two utilize parts of both the others, but lack the distinctiveness remaining. GUSTAV MAHLER'S LAST- SYMPHONY NO. 10

Advantages: Embodies some of Mahlers most notable music qualities.
Disadvantages: Unfinished.

...and Naxos. There are many versions played by various orchestra's and in different decades to choose from, the most recent notable one has been Simon Rattle's Berlin orchestra's performance. Overall if you like Mahler this is a definite buy, if you are new to Mahler get this as part of a compliation package, if new to classical music perhaps sample it before you purchase. --- AVAILABILITY --- There are many labels and different recordings of this that is hard to suggest which one to go for. You can buy it stand alone or as a compilation of Mahlers other music. If you are new to Mahler buy a complilation of his other scores too as he has so many other offerings (Symphony No. 1 is one of my favourites). If you have some Mahler music already then I would suggest the Naxos label which has Symphony No. 10 all on its own for around £5....

I use it, my mother uses it, and I recently found out that my Grandmother used it for many years until she died too. Number 5 is number 1 with me

...My mother used to use this perfume and when I was younger I therefore assumed it was for older ladies! But Mum lent me some when I had forgotten my perfume one holiday in my early 20s and boy did I change my mind. I have used it ever since - first of all for "best" but now I use it almost exclusively, I like it that much. The bottles are beautifully elegant and the perfume matches the look - elegant and classy, floral but not overly so, nor too musky, yet strong enough to last for several hours. You can of course also get other items than the perfume - see list below, though I admit I do not use the soap because I use shower crèmes and face wash. If I used soap it would be this one.
