Wicked music for female performers
Review of Wicked: Vocal Selections - Stephen Schwartz by
musicalmuppa
Advantages: Great songs, perfect for performance, audition or just for fun at home
Disadvantages: To have the whole score would be even better
...Product: Vocal selections from the musical Wicked
Setting: Vocal line with piano accompaniment and chords
Composer/lyricist: Stephen Schwartz
Published by: Hal Leonard Music Publishing
Price: RRP £10.95
Cheapest buy at time of writing amazon.co.uk - marketplace - £5.04
The vocal selections of this hit musical from 2003 are a big asset to any female musical theatre performer or fan. The book contains all the great songs from show along with a section of pictures from the original production.
The music is printed with vocal line, piano accompanyment and chords. There is also a note from the composer in which he explains his choice to make small changes to the score when publishing this book. The changes are all to the positive, mainly eliminating interior instrumental or chorus sections. To my delight the duets from the show...

Rent to buy
Review of Rent: Vocal Selections - Jonathan Larson by
musicalmuppa
Advantages: Good songs, specially for male singers
Disadvantages: Some addaptions of some songs are less than perfect
...Product: Vocal selections of the musical RENT
Setting: Vocal line, piano accompaniment and chords
Composer and lyricist: Jonathan Larson
Published by: Hal Leonard Music Publishing
Price: RRP £14.95
Cheapest at amazon.co.uk - marketplace at £5.40 at the time of writing (july 2007)
The vocal selections of the 1996 hit musical, now a big film success, includes 12 songs from the show, arranged for piano and voice, with chords for guitar-accompaniment. The musical by Jonathan Larsson took first off-Broadway, and, shortly after, Broadway by storm and was one of the most successfull musicals of the 1990's. It has been played in a number of countries, and is still playing on Broadway.
In the selections some ensemble songs have been adapted into solo songs, like the title-song Rent and Seasons of Love, making it possible to sing them...

Be-Witching music from Eastwick
Review of Witches of Eastwick Vocal Selections - John Dempsey by
musicalmuppa
Advantages: A lot of good music for female voices. Easy to learn, fun to sing!
Disadvantages: It lacks the song "Eye of the beholder"
...Product: Vocal selections of the musical Witches of Eastwick

Composer: Dana P Rowe
Lyricist: John Dempsey

Cheapest at amazon.co.uk - marketplace at £11.21 at the time of writing (july 2007)
The vocal selections of the musical The Witches of Eastwick is one of my favourite books. It contains all the good songs from the musical, including three of the trios between the witches and the duet “Something”, completely written out with all the parts and even a shortened version of the ensemble song “Dirty Laundry” with all the ensemble parts. The book also contains four strong up-tempo songs for female voices, as well as the beautiful ballad “Loose Ends”. Two songs for male voice are also included. The only song I...

Selected? Naturally!
Review of Darwin's Watch: The Science of Discworld III - Terry Pratchett, Ian Stewart, Jack Cohen by
Calypte
Advantages: challenges ways of thinking
Disadvantages: general relativity still has be stumped!
...is a little hard to really take in, but the specific examples are dealt with very well. Back on the subject of evolution, the authors digress to discuss the invention/development of the steam engine. Now, James Watt might have the credit, but the basic technology had been around since Ancient Egypt. The idea being put across is that 'inventions' (or changes) aren't necessarily the direct result of the final step, but built on a history of smaller developments.
The same idea works in genetics - and this is the most successful chapter, in my mind, coming at the end and finally pulling together all the tangents we've run off on. The steam engine concept holds true for genetic changes, and the authors quite clearly challenge 'common' thinking on the subject of natural selection. I really liked this: not just learning, but having my way of thinking...

Let us live and let us love Catullus!
Review of Selected Poems - Catullus by
Muswell
Advantages: Funny, passionate, witty, sophisticated
Disadvantages: Sometimes the poetic technique seems more important than the emotions behind the poem
...I’m not sure whether “selected poems” is supposed to refer to any particular edition/translation of Catullus, so I’ll describe my experiences with Catullus and if it’s off topic, well shucks to that.
I, like most Latin students, had to read various bits of Catullus in the original at GCSE. In my case, a number of his love poems to Lesbia. I didn’t really enjoy Catullus at first, and most of my friends didn’t either. I think this was because we needed a great deal of help with the translations, translated far too literally, and didn’t really view the poems as works of literature; rather, we viewed them as something we had to memorise for an exam. It wasn’t until A-level, when an appreciation of the poems became just as important as being able to translate them, that I really started to enjoy Catullus.
Catullus wrote a huge variety...
