TAG Heuer and the 4000 series automatics

Advantages: Quality, reputation, solid, diving potential, the tests they go through.
Disadvantages: Automatics are a nightmare, too expensive, can do a lot better, you wonder if yours was ever tested.

...I've had a TAG Heuer 4000 series watch since 1997 and always wanted to write an opinion on it since I joined Ciao. Unfortunately, or fortunately, this is no longer available, but this opinion may be helpful if anyone wishes to buy a second hand one or if anyone was thinking of purchasing on at the sales. When I bought this (or was given this to be precise) it retailed for just under £1000, but 50% off was easily found at the sales. <Timeline> I was aware of TAG Heuer through it's sporting participation, the most notable achievement being the official timer for the formula one world championship and the sponsorship of the McLaren team (Go on, admit it, you want the same watch as Mika, DC or Boris Becker!). Tag Heuer 2000 - A Sad Tale

Advantages: Beautiful watch that makes a stylish impression
Disadvantages: Doesn't keep accurate time, very unreliable

...I'd always admire Tag Heuer watches and promised myself one day I'd buy one. Eventually a big bonus came in and I treated myself to a £595 Tag Heuer 2000 with a white face. I was so proud! It really is beautiful and drew admiring comments from anyone I met. The first problem I noticed was it would lose or gain up to 5 seconds a day! This was particularly noticable in the winter, when you moved from cold outdoors to warm indoors. Contacting the official Tag Dealer I'd bought the watch from I suggested it may have a fault. Not so; I discovered that the Official Swiss Institute that certifies these things considers a Chronograph (not a watch by the way!) something that doesn't lose or gain more than 7 seconds! Tag Heuer 4000 automatic watch

Advantages: automatic
Disadvantages: none

...I was lucky enough to purchase my Tag 4000 on ebay in 2003 from a seller in Switzerland, and I have NEVER had a single problem with the automatic movement. All it requires is wearing it everyday. If I miss a Sunday or the whole weekend, I might have to self-wind it to catch it up, but this should be expected with an automatic movement. You either have to place the watch in an automatic winding device, or you have to catch it up yourself before wearing it again. I doubt if there was anything wrong at all with the previous reviewer's watch. From his review, it sounds like he didn't know much about automatics. I had never had an automatic watch before my Tag, but I won't buy another quartz if I can help it. I have more problems with watch batteries. I love this Tag automatic!...

...I've been a watch fan since as long as I can remember, and have always had an eye for the more expensive end of the market. My obsession - and it is an obsession - with Tag's started early on and imagine my joy on my 18th birthday when I was presented with one - A Formula 1 watch, with a rubber strap in bright blue - I loved that watch, it served me well for 17 - yes 17 years. In fact I still have it now and it keeps time as well today as it did when new. In all that time it's probably only had 4 batteries as well. All tagged up and nowhere to go

...I bust watches and without wanting to boast, I'm bloody good at it. It's not a conscious thing, it just happens. Apart from anything else I'm a compulsive fiddler. If the strap has a catch then I fiddle with it, usually cycling it until it busts. If it isn't that then I bang 'em on something or scratch the face or whatever. The odds 'n ends draw at home (does everyone have an odds' 'n ends draw or is it just me?) is full of busted watches in various states of disassembly. Sad sight. In desperation I decided to buy a posh watch in the hope that it might be a bit more likely to withstand the ravages of my neglect. I looked at all sorts but in the end slapped down the readies for a ?bottom-of-the-range? TAG Heuer. Even a budget TAG puts a severe strain on the old wallet. Five hundred and fifty big ones in 1996 wiped the smile off...

A muggers wet dream!!

Advantages: quality build - long lasting battery - looks awesome - water resistant
Disadvantages: expensive to buy - batteries are expensive

...At the age of 9 I acquired a fake Tag Heuer watch for £5 from an undesirable at a local market and I thought it the bees knees until it then proceeded to die on me about a week later never to tell the time in this mortal realm again. Fast-forward 15 years and my obsession with Tag Heuer watches was still strong and after receiving a hefty bonus I decided that I would treat myself to a Tag Heuer 2000 series. I decided upon this watch to satisfy my obsession, the fact that it looks great and was fairly cheap in Tag terms costing £525. I have attached a picture of the watch below - it is made from stainless steel, the face having a diameter of 3.4cm and protected by nearly 1 cm of shockproof glass. The face is black, the hands being made again from stainless steel and another luminous material making them stand out during the daytime...

Beautiful Looks- shame about the rest

...I was bought the Tag Heuer Monico watch as a Christmas present from my wife in December 2006 and was of course extremely pleased as always loved the look of the watch. The watch looks fantastic, the large square shape can take a little getting used to as can be slightly uncomfortable at first on the wrist, but this is hardly anything to complain about as the looks of the watch is well worth this and you soon get used to it. I instantly fell in love with this watch and would wear it every day, only taking it off for sports etc. Unfortunately I soon had problems - the watch does not run on a battery but is powered by the kinetic movement of your arm - I had left the watch off for a few days when I had gone away hiking and on my return the watch had stopped. I re-set the correct time and powered the watch back up by swaying it back...

A useful watch

Advantages: Handsome design, rugged, compact, many useful features
Disadvantages: A little difficult to set the alarm, for other features you sometimes have to use the manual

...I purchased a TAG Heuer Kirium Forumula 1 watch about six months ago, and it has been a rugged, good-looking companion. After wearing a digital quartz $39 Timex Ironman for five years, I got used to having an alarm, which I consider indispensible. So after researching sport/dress watches that I could wear in meetings, etc., I decided to go for the F1 with a steel band. Being in my early fifties, I felt (and my wife concurred) that I deserved a good watch. Yes, it is expensive; I paid about $2,000 for it in San Francisco at a watch store that handled several of the watches I was interested in, so I could compare them on my wrist. I realize I could have saved $500 or more by purchasing online, but I appreciate that retailers have to pay rent and staff time, and have inventory to show customers who really need to see and try...
