8mm - Measuring the Porn Industry
Review of 8MM DVD by
Scotsmanmatt
Advantages: Points towards a seedier side of a 'glamorous' porn industry
Disadvantages: Some could find the film distasteful and/or disturbing
...Summary Review:
This film, starring Nicholas Cage, confronts the viewer with the suggestion that there might exist a more sinster side to the world of porn at its most extreme that we are all blissfully unaware of, or choose not to consider. Whilst the storyline doesn't have any great twists or turns the impact of the film lies with where it leaves the viewer, i.e. questioning what does exist at the extreme level of the porn industry even if not what is portrayed in the film. A well directed movie of modern day relevance.
Synopsis of the Film:
Tom Welles [Nicholas Cage] is a small time surveillance specialist come private investigator. Called in on a discreet investigation of a reel of 8mm tape showing what appears to be a snuff movie. His job is to ascertain the genuiness of the film and the fate of the young woman portayed...

Nicholas Cage and his 8mm……
Review of 8MM DVD by
louloutrixabelle
Advantages: Different, and thought-provoking
Disadvantages: Very grim, and terryfying
...Again, another Nicholas Cage film! Before you ask, I am no way near a fan yet unfortunately my close friend is, and our video nights are mainly Nicholas Cage orientated.
8MM (Eight Millimetre) is a Joel Schumacher production released in 1998. If you’ve watched either Se7en, or Phonebooth, you will know that Schumacher isn’t exactly famous for his pleasant topics. His films are mostly distressing and horrifying to the eye, and with 8MM, there is no escape.
FRONT COVER
Nicholas Cage’s sober face stares intensely out from the video case. Down the left side, overlapping his cheek, is a repetitive ghost like figure of a girl, on a reel of film. On the back you see the phrase, ‘you can’t prepare for where the truth will take you’.

8mm - not a happy movie
Review of 8MM DVD by
Xeon007
Advantages: Great acting, original
Disadvantages: Poor plot, too long
...Nicolas Cage stars in possibly his darkest movie ever.
Cage stars as Tom Welles, a PI yet to make his big break. When a rich widow offers him the case that could make his career, he jumps at the chance. All he has to do is find out if a “snuff” tape (a video of a person being murdered) found by the widow, belonging to her late husband, is real or not. Unfortunately, things are not that simple and the case could cost Welles his life and more.
The plot of the film is disturbing to say the least. I was not particularly looking forward to this movie as I knew just from the description of the movie from the reviews that I had read that it would not be a happy two hours.
The first half of the movie will shock you (well it shocked me) the most as you learn about the snuff tape and the world of pornography. The second...

Some doors should never be opened
Review of 8MM DVD by
bigmatti
Advantages: Superb acting by Nicolas Cage, original story!
Disadvantages: Some may think its too sickening!
...explains to his wife that he's going to have to work away for a few days on a case he simply cannot afford to turn down.
Welles has been contacted by the elderly widow of an extremely wealthy business man who has recently passed away. Welles has been called in to watch an old 8MM tape that was discovered in the dead business man's safe by his widow, and decide whether what he sees is real or fake. The 8MM shows a girl being murdered in a horrific sex act.
The story then unfolds with Welles setting off on a journey full of danger and life-threatening situations in order to find out the truth about the Snuff film.
>> My Opinion <<
This film is one of the best i've seen, for mainly 2 reasons, It has a pretty original film and the intensity of the film.
>> Originality <<
I think the film is original. Its basically set...

Samsung VP-W80U 8mm Camcorder
Review of Samsung VP-W80U by
ianhutch
Advantages: Price, Ease of use, Looks
Disadvantages: No LCD, No remote control, No accessory socket
...on the sound track when holding it.
The camcorder comes with a Li-ion rechargable battery which is the latest type and does not suffer from the memory effect, seems to last a good while too. It has a mains power supply which you can use when playing back your tapes and also charges the battery on the camera. There is an av lead to connect to the TV and a scart adaptor should your TV not have front phono inputs.
All in all I would recomend this camcorder to anyone on a budget and like me has a large collection of old 8mm tapes to play back which are not compatible with digital models....

Some things are twisted and very real
Review of 8MM DVD by
NAZGUL
Advantages: addresses true horror
Disadvantages: things like this do happen
...8mm
The film is rather bold in that it takes on a subject that is not one for the faint hearted in that it centres around a young girl who is missing and starts with a widower who’s late husband was rather filthy rich and she found a video tape with the said young girl and what looks like her being murdered on film, and so she hires a private detective named Tom Welles. Who is played by Nicholas cage, Welles then sets about going deep into the demented sick and twisted world of the snuff film both the makers and those who peddle the evil filth and uncovers more than anyone could dream in some demonic nightmare.
This film is not for those who get unnerved by the sick dark side of humans and so you should only see this if you are not one for having nightmares about films you see and it should be a lesion in that for some...

Great tape. This is about TAPE.
Review of Sony P5-90HMP3 Tape by
andycharger
Advantages: High quality tape that does not suffer from degradation
Disadvantages: Hard to get hold of.
...and lead to carrying too many spares around. A longer tape, such as 120 minutes leads to thinner tape to fit in the actual physical size of the cape casing. This can lead to stretching and malformed tapes.
A 90 gives extra recording time and does not suffer from stretching.
However, these tapes are hard to track down. You can normally only buy the Sony tapes in 60 and 120 minute tape length and the 90's are quite rare. IT may be an imported style of tape as I have only seen them at Heathrow and Gatwick.
This tape does perform best in a Sony Camcorder but it does not manit can only be used in this camera. Any Camera that takes Hi8 size Camcorder tape can use these for recording or playback.
What makes it so good?
Well, its a metal particle cassette. This is the equivalent to the Chrome Audio cassettes that Sony make. It gives a much...

Will All The Perverts Please Stand Up
Review of 8MM DVD by
Mauri
Advantages: Good central performance
Disadvantages: Poor secondary characters
...The ‘snuff’ movie has become somewhat of an urban myth in recent years. Do films that show the torture and actual killing of a person for the sexual gratification of others actually exist? Or are the ones that purport to be ‘Snuff’ movies simply well executed, realistic fakes made in order to satisfy the perverted cravings that unfortunately do exist in some quarters of our society.
If you expect 8mm to be an in depth study of morality or the extremes of the sex industry then you’re in for a disappointment. 8mm start off wanting to be more than it actually is and ends up being a reasonable thriller but not much more.
THE PLOT
Tom Welles (Nicholas Cage) is a private investigator hired by a wealthy widow to track down the makers of a 8mm 'snuff' film (hence the title) found amongst her deceased...
