Between DLT and SDLT - 80 - 160GB Backup
Review of Quantum DLT VS160 80 GB 160 GB by
davidbarnes82
Advantages: Fast, reliable, Good Price
Disadvantages: No SCSI cable included, Not Great instructions
...I bought this for our office server which before-hand was running a DDS5 tape drive. I have to say the DDS5 backup system we had was excellent and never caused me any problems.
We got to a point where we needed two tapes to do a backup, and considering we keep backups for up to a month, thats a hell of a lot more tapes we would have to buy.
After a lot of research and learning about DLT and SDLT, we discovered the V160. DLT allows backups to 40GB (80GB Compressed) and SDLT is alot more (i forget the figures). DLT would not have been enough and SDLT is a hell of a lot more expensive.
Quantums V160 is right in the middle of the two and each tape can store up to 160GB data if compressed. We managed to get the drive for around £700 and then bought a number of tapes. It was delivered direct from Quantum within a week.
The one problem I...

The Ultrium-ate Review
Review of Fujifilm LTO Ultrium 200 GB by
Calldean
Advantages: Fast
Disadvantages: Cost
...of DDS (Four flavours) which is a small 4mm tape, 8MM and DLT which looks very like a fat LTO tape (There are a few others but these were the main players).
While the above are still in use this is mainly due to the high cost of LTO.
If LTO is so expensive then why bother with it? Because it does all of the above very, very well. According to datasheets each tape SHOULD last up-to 250,000 hours before failing (MTBF, Meantime Between Failures) which is the same as DLT IV (Nearest rival) but the head life is double the DLT at 60,000 hours. This means, in theory, your tape should last twice as long.
An LTO tape can be written to at rates of 20-30MB per Second. This is very quick meaning that large amounts of data (I.E. Up-to 200GB) can be backed up very quickly (DLT Manages 6MB per Second).
Size:
*****
An LTO tape is 4.1 x 4.0 x 0.8 in. (105...

Back me right up!
Review of HP StorageWorks DLT VS 80 40 GB 80 GB by
andycharger
Advantages: Reliable, efficient data storage. Good compatibility
Disadvantages: Noisy, capacity not the greatest, speed.
...As most of you may be aware, computer data is very important to most of us in out jobs today. However, what happens if that data is suddenly lost or destroyed? Well, I can tell you, we would be in a right mess!
Therfore the best method to protect yourself is to back up your computer data regularly! This is ok on your home computer as a lot of people back up their important files to memory stick, DVD or CD.
But what happens in the office where there are lots of shared files and data?
enter the data tape drive. Yes your servers at work are probably backed up onto tapes. These are not too dissimilar to your Audio tapes of a few years back. They are magnetic tapes that store large amount sof computer data on them via a tape drive.
Im going to tell you all about my reliable workhorses I have here at work. The HP DLT VS80 tape drives...

Cheap RAID card is perfect! (but slow)
Review of Intel RAID Controller SRCS14L by
waga
Advantages: online capacity expansion, deals with hard disc problems better
Disadvantages: slow compared to software RAID
...Dead cheap raid 5 card compared to similar others (£50 cheaper). It also allows online capacity upgrades, which basically means you can expand the size of the RAID without destroying the data on the RAID. handy!
The main reason for me getting a RAID 5 hardware solution rather than a software solution again, is the fact that even if one of the hard discs on a software RAID5 becomes slightly iffy, it drops it, and you have to rebuild!!! With hardware RAID5, it'll automatically recover, and will rebuild in the background.
This fits into my PCI-33 slot, but can alos connect to a PCI64. mmmm tasty... It has LEDs on the card for RAID access, CRC, and Drive access (4 LEDS) and it has all the necessary connectors for external LEDS too! I nearly creamed myself with the thought of 6 blue LEDS connected externally to the RAID card.
I would...

Good value, if you're not a slave to TV
Review of Daewoo DLT 20 W 2 by
lordbolt
Advantages: Good quality picture and sound for its size and price
Disadvantages: Clunky menus, eccentric manual, the size if you watch loads of films
...Overall this is a good quality and value for money TV let down slightly by a clunky menu system and, surprise, surprise, a fairly confusing manual which forces you to work pretty well everything out yourself. (It doesn't look too bad when switched off either)
If you want super hi-def picture and sound for your total home cinema experience, then look elsewhere. Although the Daewoo supports HDMI, it isn't fully HD compliant in terms of picture quality, and the relatively small screen doesn't flatter yer run of the mill hollywood blockbuster DVD. (I tend to go to the cinema to see films propah! anyway)
Having said that, if, like me you're not a slave to the idiot lantern and just want something that works, and looks and sounds fairly reasonable (especially when hooked up to a decent set of speakers) or wants a reasonably sized 2nd set...

This is how backups SHOULD be
Review of Quantum DLT 8000 40 GB 80 GB by
Kevin_Pritchard
Advantages: Fast, reliable, and the prices are coming down
Disadvantages: Tape load time is still slow... typical DLT, though
...Enterprise backups are important... as we all know. I've long trusted DLT technology and the DLT-8000 doesn't disappoint. As long as you know how to get the most from a tape drive, and a SCSI subsystem in general, you won't have any problems, but you will have greatly shortened backups.
I've obtained nearly 350MB/minute with this drive. On an 100GB server, that puts the backup window at less than 5 hours!
There are two keys to getting the most out of these drives. First, ensure that your tape drive firmware is updated. There were at least 2 or 3 different versions that have been improved upon since these drives first came out. The update is really as simple as making the tape with a free utility, pushing a couple of buttons on the drive and inserting the update tape.
Second, make sure your SCSI controller is able to handle the speed...

Super... NovaBackup
Review of Nova Backup by
MikeWhalley
Advantages: Cheap, easy to install and use, lots of software
Disadvantages: may not have all the features of some of the bigger apps
...BACKUP - The word that everyone in the IT community hates. Whether it be because you 'really should be looking into getting' a backup system, or are cussing because you *haven't* got a backup system, and it's too late!
Now I'm hoping that the reason you're reading this is not because of the latter, but rather because you're worried because you haven't got any backup system in place and don't want to loose any work.
This opinion is based on my experiences of installing and using NovaBack+ at work. The version of NovaBack+ we use is 6.60 and is installed on a PIII 600 machine with 128mb of RAM and Windows 95. The backup drive was an HP SureStore DLT80. Although it should work with a lot lower spec.
NovaBack+ Features
* Will work with most backup devices - Tape, Disk, CDR/W, removable disk, and many other types...

Paz21
Advantages: Many things
Disadvantages: Limited amount of choice of colours
...When you depend on communication in your work or sparetime, you need a mobile phone you can count on. The Nokia 6150 provides long and dependable operating times. And it operates in three networks, so more calls will get through. And you will have a more dependable connection for data calls. The Nokia 6150 is a very small dual band phone, and it provides the longest operating times. It stands by for up to 11 days with the standard battery and for up to 18 days with the extended battery. Even if you are on the phone a lot, an hour in the optional desktop stand a few times a week should give you all the power you need. The Nokia 6150 operates in GSM 900, GSM 1800 and GSM 900/1800 dual band networks, automatically switching between networks, even during a call within the same operator. Thanks to the extra channels, you get more completed...
