Tangenizing at it's best!
Review of Tangents 1973-1983 [Remastered] - Tangerine Dream by
orrin31
Advantages: Unreleased tracks
Disadvantages: Price, some 're-mixing'
...As you may have already guessed, this is a ‘best of’ album. As Tangerine Dream have been around for the past 40 years, you don’t need to be a fan to know there are lots of these compilation albums around – some good, some so bad you feel embarrassed to look at the cover let alone play it. ‘Tangents’ is certainly one of the best.
The tracks are from a wide range of studio and sound track albums; some classic ones like Ricochet, White Eagle and Exit, to some quite rare and difficult to find tracks (Wavelength and Flashpoint). Disk 5 contains a lot of previously unreleased tracks, which makes a very useful added bonus, and makes the price worthwhile.
Many of the tracks are just excerpts of long single track albums like Ricochet, but some are re-mixed, or "tangenized", as some fans call it. Some of them are quite different...

The Rise of The Sinister Magic Jumpers
Review of Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09 (Xbox 360) by
Concrete_Donkey
Advantages: Relaxing and often gratifying sports sim
Disadvantages: Buy anything using Microsoft Points and I will hunt you down
...right-on features like more hats and novelty beards to adorn your sportspeople with. Well this update has bucked the trend with some sexy new - shock horror - *gameplay* features, so stick with me you cynical old sods.
"So what's new, Donkey?" I hear you bellow with the kind of enthusiastic anticipation usually reserved for sugar-hyped five year olds on Christmas Eve. First, don't get too excited; it ain't Christmas and you certainly ain't five. The improvements are subtle and technical, and the enjoyment added will vary depending on whether you prefer a simulation or arcade experience.
***Tangent***
As an aside - I'm going to write this on the strict assumption you:-
a) Know what golf is
b) Understand the principles and objectives of a golfing videogame (see a)
Or, if you really want to be patronised I can re...

I blame Waterstones
Review of The Hitchhiker's Guide to The Galaxy - Douglas Adams by
paule23
Advantages: Very funny, very surreal, four books in one
Disadvantages: A little alternative for everyone's tastes
...that the Earth being demolished for a hyperspace bypass is not an everyday occurrence, and slightly bizarre, and this seems to be a recurring theme through the book. Adams (that's Douglas Adams, the creator/author/scriptwriter/bizarre person) often goes off at a tangent, with some very surreal, off-the wall and bizarre happenings and descriptions (a bit like this review I think you'll agree, it's all the bloomin' Waterstones fault, if they hadn't ........) The four books of the trilogy, not my maths mistake by the way, follow the travels and tribulations of the aforementioned Arthur Dent as he comes to terms with the Earth being demolished and some strange revelations involving mice and dolphins amongst others.
I don't think I've ever read anything quite like this. It is so different, yet very funny. I found myself laughing out loud in places...

All Puffed Out
Review of Sex, Drugs & Cocoa Puffs - Chuck Klosterman by
Soho_Black
Advantages: Some intelligent writing
Disadvantages: A little too USA-centric
...to write so expertly on such a wide range of different subjects and make the most unlikely of hypotheses seem relevant and believable.
The major problem I have with Klosterman's writing is that he tends to take a long time proving his hypotheses. He regularly disappears off onto obscure tangents before finally circling round and coming to the point from some strange direction before vanishing off on another tangent and coming back once more. This is particularly noticeable in his essay on Billy Joel, where he makes the same point in a similar fashion several times. Perhaps when the essays were originally written he had to fill a certain word count, but in this form it feels like he's waffling just to fill space.
When he does keep to his subject, though, Klosterman proves that he can write well. His essay on following a Guns 'N' Roses...

Voles, monkeys, mosquitos and tramps
Review of Ross Noble - Unrealtime DVD by
beatlesgal25
Advantages: You'll be in stitches! 2 discs!
Disadvantages: He sometimes times the jokes so you can't get your breath back!
...thinking while you watch, don't bother with this. He doesn't use a particular format, he just writes down some material he might want to talk about, goes on stage, starts on one of his pre-determined topics and then goes off on a tangent after tangent after tangent..... It's often hard to keep up! Sometimes you'll find that at the end of the show, he's only just got round to talk about what he started talking about at the start of the show! Actually, Ross does state in the show that "this is not the most linear show you will ever see." Correct.

"Joining In"
Review of Moab Is My Washpot AudioBook - Stephen Fry by
e_coleuk
Advantages: You can do two things at once... put this on while driving the car etc.
Disadvantages: Due to subject matter it should be stamped with a large (18)
..., whether it's not being able to play sport because of his asthma, or not being able to sing.
One of my favourite tangents is where Fry describes how he got his bent nose and how friends have told him not to change it. He draws a parallel between this and the Royal Family, calling them the "bent nose of Britain"...we may consider changing them, but they look distinguished to other countries. A lot of Fry's quirks and memories put a smile on my face.
But the most striking memories of all, lots of people may agree, are about first love. I'm listening to another audio book at the moment, Fry's "The Liar", a novel drawing much from personal experience. Fry quotes a section from it in "Moab" where Adrian Healey (based on himself) falls in love with a beautiful young boy called Hugo Cartwright. It was at the age of 14 that Fry falls head over...

who needs oxygen when we have AIR!
Review of AIR Live by
Daysleeper
Advantages: THE MUSIC, THEMUSIC, THE MUSIC!!
Disadvantages: That it ever ended....
...’ was quite the opposite, incredibly different from all concerts I’d experienced previously and insanely tremendous! (my English teacher’s gonna murder me…I spoke proper England…yeh baby!) Woo and indeed Hooo! (I stole that from someone on Ciao, apologies if its you, but you a trend setter, be proud!)
They played everything that I’m familiar with. A lot from the ‘Virgin Suicides’, and the majority of ‘Moon Safari’. Totally giving the audience what they wanted. Leaving after an hour they came back for a seven set encore, and here they played their biggies departing from Glasgow with an inspired, probably still stoned, audience thrilled and smiling from a totally awesome (Waynes world rocked! Tangents – too many tangents, I clearly need an editor) experience that, well...

Funny. Very, very funny.
Review of Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy - Douglas Adams by
spiffo
Advantages: Funny, imaginative and surprising.
Disadvantages: The last two books failed to live up to expectations.
...Ah yes, the Hitch-Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. One of the strangest books I’ve ever read, but also one of the best. The characters and their adventures are good enough, but the most amazing thing about the book, and the whole series, is the way that Douglas Adams adds background to the scenes by going off on tangents to tell you different stories.
The basic plot is that an alien race wanted to find out the answer to life, the universe and everything, so they built a computer to find it out. The computer spent millions of years calculating and computing before telling the descendants of its creators that the answer was, indeed, 42.
They were obviously enough annoyed, so they asked the computer what the question was. The computer said that it didn’t know, but it could build a computer called “Earth” to find out. That computer would...
