...After using tonnes of high-street fake tans I was very apprehensive about trying Fake Bake but decided to give it a go. The first time I purchased Fake Bake was from www.lookfantastic.co.uk and was in a set which included Fake Bake original lotion, body scrub and body oil and I was left with not much change from £50.00!! I thought it must be something special at that sort of price. I followed the instructions that came with it and started off by using the body polish all-over in the shower. Most natural tan!

Advantages: Natural tan, long lasting, easy to apply
Disadvantages: smells

...I use this product regularly and think it is the best fake tan of them all! My best results have been when I exfoliate before and moisturise 3 hours before applying the tan. So I recommend doing this before you fake tan. Most of the time I skip this step as it still does acheive excellent results. I think it is important to leave 3 hours after moisturising for the skin to soak up the moisture otherwise this can make your tan not develop as deep. The fake tan goes on brown so you can see where you are putting it a lot of the other fake tans out there go on colourless therefore you can't see where you have put it on and how heavy you have put it on. ...Ladies, I have found yet another excellent self tanning lotion that you must try. There really is no excuse for white pasty skin any more! This self tan is from the No.7 range and it's priced at £9.50 for 200ml which I think is a reasonable price. It's a special fake tan because it is tinted so when you apply the fake tank you can see where you have applied it and where you have missed. It comes in a yellow box and it states that it contains jojoba extract, cocoa butter and vitamins A and E to moisturise and nourish skin. ...Although I got on fantastically well with the Whipped Bronze Instant Self-Tanning Mousse from St Tropez I'm always up for trying new products and it appeared to me that more people use the normal 'lotion' as opposed to the mousse. Is it better? Let's see. ST TROPEZ TINTED SELF-TANNING LOTION The bottle for this lotion is quite different to the mousse. This lotion is presented in a smart, thick white plastic bottle with a black pump action nozzle. It proclaims itself as being 'Step 3' (and we all know what that means!) St Tropez like to make out that only their Step 1 and Step 2 could POSSIBLY precede Step 3 but I disagree - Step 1 is essentially just an exfoliator and Step 2 is a moisturiser. I would imagine that anyone willing to fork out money on a fake tan probably owns AT LEAST one exfoliator and moisturiser already...

Last year, being a very pale shade with the task of being a bridesmaid for one of my mates, I decided that I didn't want my pale skin to clash with the pale dress I had to wear!! So off to a salon to have the St Tropez professional tanning treatment. I was amazed! I emerged from the salon with a decent tan (as it is coloured you can see the effects immediately). The tan developed and I was left looking as though I had been on holiday. It lasted for nearly 2 weeks. A real confidence boost for the vain people amongst us!! Shimmerific tan

Advantages: Nice shimmer, easy to apply, no nasty smell

The product is definitely suitable for first time self tanners, even I didn't manage to mess it up and I'm rather lacking in the skills department for this one! The problems I encoutered were when it came to the back of my leg/heel area and my feet. I didn't apply far enough down my heel and the sides of my feet. Its probably best to cover your whole foot and then wipe the soles. I ended up with huge variations between brown tops and white sides of feet. I also managed to turn the palms of my hands rather orange-y, I probably should have washed them a couple of times whilst I was applying to prevent colour build up.
