I love my Tannoy's
Review of Tannoy Reveal by
chongster
Advantages: Very clear, very crisp
Disadvantages: slight lack of bottom end! Tho I wouldnt frett.
...Finally ! After 2 years i've got my small home studio together. Why so long? laziness and a sheer huge ammount of university work to do, that's why.
Im Welsh but you could forgive me for being Scottish by my meaness when it comes to forking out for equipment (only joking, no offence to any Scottish, just mirroring an urban myth of being tight with the cash heh.)
The Tannoy Reveal Actives come in at around £359. Believe me I've been to every single site to find the cheapest price and they all more or less (+-10%) fizzle off at that price. I was told about these monitors a while ago and that if I wanted to use them for dance music that I should think twice! Whoever that was, they got it wrong. These babys boom loud let me tell you. I was amazed by the clarity of the sound. They handled the roughest, most dirty basslines I could...

Tannoy Mercury m3 floorstanders
Review of Tannoy M3 by
iangrant
Advantages: Deep bass, weighty sound. Relatively cheap.
Disadvantages: Actually discontinued (seek out newer mx3s), treble and detail can sound a little less exciting compared to other speakers.
...As I said, I don't know what the mx3s are like, but I expect them to sound similar, but with an improved (tweaked) sound.
Unfortunately, these speakers aren't bi-wireable so an upgrade involves new speakers. Perhaps Tannoy's Revolution R2s or R3s would be the way to go - I haven't heard these myself, but they have received good reviews and are more aimed at hi-fi than home cinema.
If you use these in a home cinema set up, Tannoy also make rear, centre and subwoofer speakers in the Mercury range, so get yourself a surround sound (5.1) amp/receiver and a DVD player, widescreen TV... etc.....

Tannoy takes centre stage.
Review of Tannoy Mercury mXc-M Centre Speaker by
g8ina
Advantages: Great price Vs performance, compact, good sound.
Disadvantages: Very minor "boxiness" in mid range.
..., probably a bit of a hump at around 800Hz, if my gut feel is anything to go by (that and 22 years in the industry)......
The Tannoy MxC is a small, compact 3 way speaker unit, with two main drivers and a central tweeter. My model has a light Maple wood finish, but it comes in other colour schemes to suit your furnishings.
The speaker is intended to sit either on top of your TV, or, in my case, underneath it. It is a good idea to have the TV sit on top of the speaker if possible, as this will anchor the speaker cabinet solidly in place so the cones can move freely against the cabinet, and not cause any phase errors or other distorions. Its the same priciple as spike mounting the main speakers onto the floor (see my EVO3 review for more info).
The two main drivers are 130mm diameter placed either side of the single centre placed tweeter...

A Sound Bargain!
Review of Tannoy Sensys 2 by
peterkinxl5
Advantages: AWESOME sound quailty out of all proportion for the price (see review), decent build quality and finish,
Disadvantages: Not so great for loud thumping Bass, but you can't have everything! Hulking them back home 15 miles.
...of purchasing there sadly.
Then I visited SuperFi, literally two minutes walk away. I browsed around, two models catching my eye-the Tannoys and a close equivalent by KEF. I outlined my requirements to Chris and was pointed in the direction of the Tannoys. Now I'd only brought £200 with me but I'd gone in on the first day of the sale-and these
had been reduced form £400. Now my attention was grabbed...
Chris set the Speakers up and played an MP3 copy of 'Bohemian Rhapsody' by Queen through them. This was the extreme opposite to what I wanted them for (the MP3 format rather than Queen), but I noticed a good treble and midrange response and felt the bass was adequate at least for my needs.
On furthur enquiry, I discovered they were SACD compatible, had a two year guarantee and SuperFi had a boxed set available.
So I hagggled asking...

HOME CINEMA ON A BUDGET? TRY THESE.
Review of Tannoy FX 5.1 Home Cinema Speaker System by
iiyama1000
Advantages: Small,unobtrusive satellite speakers.
Disadvantages: Not as good as larger speakers.
...I brought my set of tannoys 15 months ago and, at the time, they cost £300.Now,with a little searching around, they can be obtained for under £200.
What you get in the box is five satellite speakers(two front, two rear and a centre speaker) plus a seperate powered subwoofer.
You also get wall mounted supports for the two front and two rear speakers and all the speaker cables(i changed the cables to 79 stand q.e.d. speaker cable to improve the sound).
Setting up the system is relatively easy:you just need an electric drill for the the wall mounted stands and once fitted, you just connect the cables to your home cinema amp. Easy!!
Once you have connected everything,it is time to try out the system. My first reaction and i am sure yours will be the same was one of complete disbelief!!
The sound quality for such small speakers...

The i12: Ace in a venue, but not solo performers.
Review of Tannoy I12 by
AshLawler
Advantages: Compact, go loud without distortion, daisy-chainable speakon connections.
Disadvantages: Narrow treble dispersion, MDF cabinets are heavy and softer than ply.
...setting with a hifi amp will result in misery. They've been designed for 200-or-more-Watts RMS amplifiers and for being a long way from their audience, so being in a small room with them as they just barely start to twitch their heavily damped 12" cones at around 20W of input is painful. Put your earplugs in, crank 'em up and stand twenty feet away, and you'll find that they'll sound just like a top-notch nightclub sound system, sans earthquake sub-bass.
If you need a higher-than-standard flying speaker in your disco rig (or your old one's a flap-coned wreck) and if you can find them for less than £1000 each, they're a bargain... at list price, they aren't. If you saw the dual-concentric design and hoped for something like Tannoy Monitor Golds, then stay away because these are a different beast altogether....

Whodunnit?
Review of Murder a la carte - Murder by Candlelight by
vikkislater
Advantages: Great fun for those looking for something a little different
Disadvantages: An expense to pay for only one use
....
JANE EYRIE - Only 26 years of age, but she has for the past seven years, been employed as the governess of Emily and they share a mutual dislike for each other. A member of the Brethren’s flock and accepts the doctrine of predestination.
SUZANNAH HEATH-CLIFFORDE - Sir Clifforde's younger half-sister. Like Sir Clifforde, enjoys fast living and is an outrageous flirt.
CARLOS CHICKENSI - A young Spanish Count doing the Grand Tour of Europe. Idle, rich and decadent, enjoys the love of good living.
After the introductions are made and everybody is aware of who the characters are and how they are all related they flip over a piece of paper which is attached the table on the stage on front of them which bears their character names so the audience can be sure of who is who during the entire course of the evening...

Floorstanding speakers - best of the bunch !
Review of Acoustic Energy Aegis Evo Three Floorstanding Speakers by
g8ina
Advantages: Sweet transparent sound, bi wireable, solidly built.
Disadvantages: None yet found !
...For several years I was a Tannoy fan - I just had to have that special "dual concentric" sound which is unique to Tannoy DC's. Since 1974, I have owned 3 different sets of Dual Concentric speakers, although I never aspired to the dizzy heights of a Westminster Gold setup (way too pricey !) However, when I upgraded from *just* a music system (CD, Tape, LP and Radio) to a full blown Home Cinema system, which needed a full blown 6.1 loudspeaker system - I had to admit defeat. The Tannoys had had their day, and it was time to move on.
Decisions, decisions..... what to get..... ??
I visited several single room demo HiFi shops in Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Shrewsbury and other parts of the Midlands area. I took my time. When you are going to spend 400 to 500 quid on JUST a pair of speakers, you have to be totally sure. Most...

Go to Gorgeous Gloucester.
Review of Gloucester in General by
Scorpio2
Advantages: A beautifully friendly City where there is plenty to do and see.
Disadvantages: None
...at the crest of a 500 foot high Rock from where you can look over three counties, Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and Monmouthshire in Wales. The view is fantastic, the river Wye curls across the landscape and around the hills in the foreground whilst across the valley “Twitchers” (Bird watchers to you and me, watch Peregrine Falcons wheeling above and diving down to their eyrie in the cliff face.
Drive around and through the Forest of Dean - not as many trees as there once was but the countryside is unique and beautiful nonetheless. The ‘Forest’ is about 27 miles square and full of little villages, mostly mining communities where coal and tine were once mined and, in some cases, are mined to this day. ‘Foresters’ have a language or at least a dialect which is all their own and are probably quite in-bred keeping the local families to themselves...
