Tannoy Arena: Sound and style that might just take you by surpris
Advantages: Amazing sound and build quality
Disadvantages: May not be to everyone's taste
...Tannoy Arena.
These speakers are an amazing piece of tech, which can make a beautiful edition to your living room.
Sound.
I can?t fault these speakers for sound. They produce a meaty sound which makes explosions roar and are detailed enough so that you can pick out every crunch and chime from the shattering of glass. Music sounds bright and has depth. The bass box can be adjusted and its big sound blends with the other speakers. The Tannoys are loud enough to easily fill your room with sound or even have you pinned to the back wall. These speakers never sound small or weak.
Looks and tactility.
These speakers look and feel brilliant. They are a beautiful blend of high quality materials. Even when turned off they make a huge contribution to any room by being eye catching but not imposing. I have these speakers on the stands which...

Tannoy Arena Speaker system
Advantages: Compact size and astounding looks with excellent quality
Disadvantages: None, unless the envy of friends counts!
...Hi,
This is a great product for those with a small to medium room who want a great surround experience without compromising Hi-Fi Stereo use too.
The subwoofer is one of very few I have heard which is able to truely blend with and complement the main speakers. (Most subs at this price point just shout 'HEY I'M A REALLY CHEAP SPEAKER AND I'M OVER HERE'!!)
The build quality is just astounding, especially the Bronze finish. The floor stands (optional extra!) make the front speakers look as amazing as they sound. They really deserve to be partnered with a top quality amp (something with a true stereo mode to really get the best out of them).
I used to work in a high end Hi-Fi shop so have heard way more expensive sytems that didn't sound close to as good as these. People could never quite believe what they were listening to. You owe to...

I love my Tannoy's
Advantages: Very clear, very crisp
Disadvantages: slight lack of bottom end! Tho I wouldnt frett.
...Finally ! After 2 years i've got my small home studio together. Why so long? laziness and a sheer huge ammount of university work to do, that's why.
Im Welsh but you could forgive me for being Scottish by my meaness when it comes to forking out for equipment (only joking, no offence to any Scottish, just mirroring an urban myth of being tight with the cash heh.)
The Tannoy Reveal Actives come in at around £359. Believe me I've been to every single site to find the cheapest price and they all more or less (+-10%) fizzle off at that price. I was told about these monitors a while ago and that if I wanted to use them for dance music that I should think twice! Whoever that was, they got it wrong. These babys boom loud let me tell you. I was amazed by the clarity of the sound. They handled the roughest, most dirty basslines I could...

Tannoy takes centre stage.
Advantages: Great price Vs performance, compact, good sound.
Disadvantages: Very minor "boxiness" in mid range.
..., probably a bit of a hump at around 800Hz, if my gut feel is anything to go by (that and 22 years in the industry)......
The Tannoy MxC is a small, compact 3 way speaker unit, with two main drivers and a central tweeter. My model has a light Maple wood finish, but it comes in other colour schemes to suit your furnishings.
The speaker is intended to sit either on top of your TV, or, in my case, underneath it. It is a good idea to have the TV sit on top of the speaker if possible, as this will anchor the speaker cabinet solidly in place so the cones can move freely against the cabinet, and not cause any phase errors or other distorions. Its the same priciple as spike mounting the main speakers onto the floor (see my EVO3 review for more info).
The two main drivers are 130mm diameter placed either side of the single centre placed tweeter...

Tannoy Mercury m3 floorstanders
Advantages: Deep bass, weighty sound. Relatively cheap.
Disadvantages: Actually discontinued (seek out newer mx3s), treble and detail can sound a little less exciting compared to other speakers.
..., the Q35s were £350 and the Missions £400), but that's not to say that they offer and inferior sound. Tannoy pitch these speakers as hi-fi, but primarily as hi-fi/home cinema speakers.
As such, at the price they offer an impressively weighty sound (probably due to the reflex ports) that goes well with home cinema and rock music alike (which is mainly what I listen to through them). In fact, the bass seems deeper and more comfortable than even the Missions I listened to.
They show a decent level of detail which isn't too harsh but can't match the sweetness of more expensive speakers.
I listen to them angled in a little to improve the stereo imaging, but given a bit of room and less toe-in the bass is deep and reasonably tight.
At higher volumes is where these speakers shine at their price level, I feel - they display a mighty sound that...

Hello Fi
Advantages: Useful, informative, easy to use, good articles
Disadvantages: none
...What Hi Fi, now what does this title suggest. Does it mean, What Hi Fi?, hmm which stuff shall I choose, or is it What, Hi Fi? Do not be a silly chap this stuff is all too expensive do not bother with it? Or could the title be a strange greeting to a person called Fi!
Well, it is as you will have all guessed a magazine to help you the consumer choose the right Hi Fi, equipment, to make your lounge sound like heaven when you play your music; unless of course you play Steps or S Club 7, when all decent music playing equipment throws a tantrum and jumps out of the window to stop it being subjected to such rubbish! In fact it is CD player and speaker hell to have such manufactured music played through it. Ohh how many teenagers did I just offend.
As, you may know I recently needed new Hi Fi equipment and so my starting point was...

Out with iPod, in with Zen X-Fi
Advantages: Quality MP3 player, easy to use
Disadvantages: no Bluetooth, radio not DAB
...Firstly the model being reviewed is a Creative Zen X-Fi 8Gb (not 8GO)
I chose Creative because they have been in the PC soundcard business for over 15 years and have a very good reputation with soundcard technology.
The Zen X-Fi is a fantastic little MP3 player, which incorporates a video player, a picture viewer and a radio.
Price paid was £87 at Amazon.co.uk with free delivery.
Standard memory capacity for this model is 8Gb (about 2000 x 4mb songs), but there are also 16Gb (£120) & 32Gb (£199) versions.
It also has a SD/SDHC slot for increased memory capacity - an 8Gb SDHC card costs £10-£15
The SDHC does not integrate with the players own memory so your can't create a playlist with songs from the respective memories.
The Zen X-Fi looks very sleek and attractive, being about the size of a credit card, about 1cm thick...

Hi-Five for the Hi-Fi
Advantages: Sound Quality, Simplicity, Remote Control, Portable
Disadvantages: Weight, Flimsy Dock Connector
...the status of the device - lighting green when the volume is adjusted or a track skipped and flashing green for 10 seconds when the iPod is paused.
The iPod itself sits in a docking port on the top of the device - adapters are provided so that you can use any iPod model with the HiFi. It sits, in the centre, at a slightly reclined angle and this it my only real concern about the whole thing. There's not much holding the iPod in place other than the docking connector, so while the whole thing is of a size that you COULD walk down the high street with it on your shoulder, the iPod is held precariously enough that I would strongly advise against it. That said, in the last 2 months I've not had any problems fitting, removing the iPod. Also on the top are two touch-sensitive buttons, labelled "-" and "+" which, unsurprisingly, control the volume...

What Hi-Fi Sound and Vision
Advantages: Very Informative, WILL help you make the right purchase
Disadvantages: Lots of adverts, price?
...I needed to get a new LCD TV and Home Cinema System. With no knowledge, I bought an issue of What Hi-Fi Sound and Vision. This magazine contains articles and mini tests on everything, you guessed it "sound and vision".
All the information and technical advice required to make my decisions easier was in the magazine. They review equipment for the average person right through to the "money no object" type (i'm the afore mentioned I hasten to add!).
After 2 hours of reading (easy to understand) I was able to make a short list and road test at the local electrical stores my choices. The magazine suggested that you shop around (how many people dont) for deals.....I did and thanks to the magazine, I saved £250 on my 2 purchases.
It is fair to say that a vast part of the magazine is a listing of "previous tests and review scores...
