Im Welsh but you could forgive me for being Scottish by my meaness when it comes to forking out for equipment (only joking, no offence to any Scottish, just mirroring an urban myth of being tight with the cash heh.) The Tannoy Reveal Actives come in at around £359. Believe me I've been to every single site to find the cheapest price and they all more or less (+-10%) fizzle off at that price. Advantages: Deep bass, weighty sound. Relatively cheap.
Disadvantages: Actually discontinued (seek out newer mx3s), treble and detail can sound a little less exciting compared to other speakers.

...As I said, I don't know what the mx3s are like, but I expect them to sound similar, but with an improved (tweaked) sound. Unfortunately, these speakers aren't bi-wireable so an upgrade involves new speakers. Perhaps Tannoy's Revolution R2s or R3s would be the way to go - I haven't heard these myself, but they have received good reviews and are more aimed at hi-fi than home cinema. If you use these in a home cinema set up, Tannoy also make rear, centre and subwoofer speakers in the Mercury range, so get yourself a surround sound (5.1) amp/receiver and a DVD player, widescreen TV... etc..... Advantages: Great price Vs performance, compact, good sound.
Disadvantages: Very minor "boxiness" in mid range.

..., probably a bit of a hump at around 800Hz, if my gut feel is anything to go by (that and 22 years in the industry)...... The Tannoy MxC is a small, compact 3 way speaker unit, with two main drivers and a central tweeter. My model has a light Maple wood finish, but it comes in other colour schemes to suit your furnishings. The speaker is intended to sit either on top of your TV, or, in my case, underneath it. It is a good idea to have the TV sit on top of the speaker if possible, as this will anchor the speaker cabinet solidly in place so the cones can move freely against the cabinet, and not cause any phase errors or other distorions. Its the same priciple as spike mounting the main speakers onto the floor (see my EVO3 review for more info). ...In what I've decided will be the second of a two part discourse on the wonders of my favourite band, R.E.M, I move forward to 2001 and their most recent offering, Reveal. This is a time where augmented blondes STILL dominate the airwaves and Slipknot show no signs of dissapearing (Damn). Musically, there isn't much to yell about except in wonderment of how Steps can have the cheek to release a 'Best Hits' album (One of life's great myseries from manufactured pop band #7657). The last R.E.M album was 'Up' which nearly scared me away with its Airportman opening track but managed to hold on with its more modern feel and the wonderful Daysleeper. So bearing this in mind, there's one word that sums up how I feel about Reveal. Finally! Reveal marks the transition that has taken R.E.M from the quite frankly pretentious self concern... ...Reveal. This is a top Easy read magazine to wander through on a quiet day…At work! Eeh I did get into trouble, what am I like? Before I really start though look at the price.. WOWEE! It's only a "quid," you cant get a lot these days for that mind? And it's weekly so you don't have to wait all month to get to know what the stars are up to and with whom! Right.. First things first, I'll go into what you get in the mag in a moment, but first I'm going to tell you why I like this fab Goss fest better than other mag's (other than Heat which I like just about the same..) Well, "Reveal" is relatively new to the market of weekly glossy magazines, it follows in the footsteps, and is very similar to heat magazine which was always my favourite until reveal came along. ...Radio Song, Losing My Religion, Shiny Happy People, What’s The Frequency, The Sidewinder, Nightswimming, Man on the Moon – a classic every one, and more, sadly, I won’t be adding many tracks from Reveal to that list. I don’t know if REM have just run out of ideas, or this is a new direction in their music that I just don’t get, whichever way it goes, this CD is already near the bottom of the pile. I’ve really tried listening over and over, but the tracks just blend into one another, the lyrics, always a bit subliminal and quirky have reached a new level of sublime and quirk. The sound is most definitely R.E.M. no mistaking the vocals for anyone else. The strongest tracks on the album by far are Imitation of Life (previously a single) and Beat a Drum, but these would only pass as filling... Read review

The reason I buy so many is I like to see every magazine's different viewpoint on a particular article/story so that I can get a more truthful picture of what is actually happening. Now I happen to have a particular fondness for Reveal magazine as it has published 2 of my letters(yay!), but it is still a very good magazine in it's own right!
