TAS PAYROLL
Advantages: easy to use, YEAR END FORMS A DODDLE
Disadvantages: none so far
...I use TAS Payroll on a daily basis in my job as an Accountant.
I find it easy to setup and to use, and it makes the End Of Year paperwork a complete doddle.
I am writing this review for people who know what I am talking about, so will not be explaining the nature of the forms etc!
TAS PAYROLL SAY THERE ARE 6 STEPS TO SETTING IT UP
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
1. Install software and follow tutorial
2. Setup company details
3. Setup employee details
4. Setup period to run payroll, enter any adjustments
5. Print payslips and reports
6. Post payroll and update totals.
They are right about this. The software comes in a box with CD and booklet. Insert CD into CD-Rom and follow instructions. Easy.
Once the programme is installed, you restart your computer and then log on to...

TASBOOKS 3 - EXCELLENT SOFTWARE * UPDATED*
Advantages: Really easy to use, helpful tool for your business
Disadvantages: can be a bit pricey depending on package
...I have had to completely rewrite this review, as the previous one was outdated and referred to the old product title and was misleading.
Tas Books 3 Controller is Accounting software from Tas Software. The company claim that it can save you hours of paperwork.
Well, I would have to agree with them. I am sorry if this reveiw gets a bit technical, but I am an Accountant, and presumably this review will be read by people looking for an Accounting Software package, and they will know what I mean!
Tas Books Controller has the following features:
Customers & Sales Ledger
+++++++++++++++++++++
You can maintain and access all customer details, products and services. You set up the codes that you want. It also has built-in correspondence for overdue accounts.
You can process batches of invoices and credit notes quickly...

Quite difficult to use at first
Advantages: Easy to correct transactions
Disadvantages: Not intuitive
...As an accountant, I have experience with accounting software, I have been using Sage and Quickbooks for 3 years and now I'm trying TAS Books.
Definately is better than Quickbooks, however it's not intuitive and without any help from someone who knows it already, it's difficult to find what you are looking for.
Example in SAGE, if you need to post an invoice from a supplier, in 2 clicks you are in the batch invoices window, in TAS there is no visible icon for it, you need to click 4 times through menus in order to find the invoice's window and even than, the clicking is not finished.
On SAGE you put all the details all in 1 line (account, ref, nominal code, description, net, vat, finished, job done!)
The overhall layout is very clunky, I think it needs a couple of version to upgrade itself and start to be competitive to SAGE. Until...

Tasbooks 3
Advantages: Good basic accounting practices
Disadvantages: Customer relations leave much to be desired
...Tasbooks 3 is a rather dated program that is unlikely to suit companies who have Internet based operations ... particularly if they are supplying an individual customer with goods that come from more than one supplier as their program assumes that your business gives hierarchal precedence to suppliers rather than customers. In essence, if a customer buys two items, each from a different supplier, you will have to enter the customer details to each supplier. Then at the time of billing you will need to generate two invoices or sales receipts for the customer's single order.
Regardless of us explaining our business model to a sales person at Tas Books at the onset, and advising them that their software unsuitable for our purpose well within the seven days UK Consumer Protection (Distance Selling) Regulations, TASBooks insist on trying...

Tuck into Turkish at Tas Pide
Advantages: tasty, good value food, decor service
Disadvantages: Only one female toilet
..., a Turkish rice pudding with rose water and orange peel. I did not mind paying £3.95 as it was something slightly different from the run of the mill desserts places often serve up. My dessert looked pretty in glass dish with a cinnamon strewn serviette underneath. My dessert fragrant and tasty at first but Ifound the rose water to be a bit overpowering by the end of it. Think rice pudding mixed with Turkish Dlight.
The service at Tas was very friendly, helpful and quick without feeling rushed. The toilets were on ground floor with a disabled toilet so completely accessible for wheelchair users. I liked the carved wooden toilet doors and the stone decoration inside. The only y problem was there only seemed to be one ladies toilet so I ended up using the disabled one.
I would highly recommend Tas Pide and would not hesitate to go to one...

Mac OS X (Complete Package)
Advantages: Very similar to Windows XP
Disadvantages: Very different from Mac OS 9
...purchasing this. When I installed this onto my Mac I had only one software compatibility problem and that was with a very old archiving program I had been using - other than that it was all ok. I have resolved my compatibility problem by not spending out money on a new archiving program but by creating 2 start-up discs on the one computer - there for on the Mac at the moment I have OS X and OS 9 installed but on different discs so as to not interfer with each other. This is very easy to set up but it does mean that if you are working in OS X and you then need to access your archive files you do then need to go to your startup disc, select OS 9 and restart your computer and then do the same to get back to OS X once you have done this.
Also on OS X it is much more user friendly. It lets you organise your files like digital images, e-books etc. in...

Ulead VideoStudio 8 Complete Package
Advantages: Ease of use, SmartSound, improved audio and titling
Disadvantages: No background rendering, some new features a bit fiddly.
...Ulead's Video Studio 8 adds new features to an already highly capable yet easy to use program, it's difficult to see what if anything can be added at this price point that could possibly deserve a whole version jump from 7 to 8.
Opening the Box
As well as the CD, Ulead Video Studio 8 includes not one but two printed manuals. The first is a user guide to the software. This covers all the basics and helps get you up to speed quickly without being too onerous a read. Also included is a rather neat guide to Digital Video editing in general by Douglas Spotted Eagle (really!). For beginners this is a great read and Ulead deserve a big pat on the back for including this second book.
System Requirements are getting slightly heavier with a Pentium III 800 with 512Mb being specified for editing (you can get by with 256Mb if you don...

BackUp MyPC Deluxe Complete package
Advantages: Supports a wide range of devices and media types
Disadvantages: Limited scheduling
...scheduler offering the ability to do a full backup of all files on a designated day of the week and optionally to do an incremental one on the other days. I wasn't very impressed with this and felt this option seriously lacked flexibility. The only saving grace it had was that you could specify the user account and password this task would run under to ensure it completed successfully even if someone else was using the PC
Finally, there is Disaster Recovery Preparation. This analyses the PC before recommending exactly what you need to do a full recovery from scratch in the case of total loss of the hard drive or a similar catastrophic failure. I tried it on a test laptop which it duly analysed before advising we needed a Windows XP Pro CD, 4 floppy disks and a blank DVD-R. All well and good but the laptop had no floppy disk drive so that was...
