...Despite a chequered past in recent years, the Brighton Tavern has emerged as a mature and attractive boozer full of character. Some years back I went there with a group of fellas on a bit of a pub crawl. It was a hard schedule and as such it was halves all round. Not only did the landlord tut tut this request, he announced it to a jeering pub and chucked us all out. We were not amused. Not least because we had put 10p in the Juke box for a play. Having said that, the whole place did stink of a ronseal factory. Then, after a few years, the Brighton Tavern was transformed with little fanfare into the B Right On Tavern. the landlord was a curious and over enthusiastic antipodean who had, and I saw it, the largest collection of extreme sport videos imagineable. He played them on the several tellies about the place much to everyone...

The Ben Crouch Tavern

Advantages: Convenient, interesting decor
Disadvantages: A tad cheesy

...This is one of the most convenient and easy to get to pubs in central London, and also has an interesting "spooky" / Hammer House of Horror sort of theme to it which makes it an interesting place to visit. HOW TO GET THERE: Finding the Ben Crouch Tavern is easy. Travel either to Oxford Circus or Tottenham Court Road tube station and head down Oxford Street (if you're coming from TCR head west, if from Oxford Street head east). You want to be walking down he north side of Oxford Street (the side wiut the big Virgin Megastore and HMV). Keep looking at the names of the roads turning off and you'll soon enough come to Wells Street. The Ben Crouch Tavern is just down there- about a hundred yards or less. Easy! THE DECOR: ...is interesting... as I stated above, it seems to be an odd, cheesy mixture of Hammer House of Horror...

It Works for me....sometimes....!

Advantages: Cheap. Good for buying presents.
Disadvantages: Sell a lot of titles you've never heard of....

...The Works is a discount bookstore which can be found on many high streets. I have browsed around a fair few discount bookstores, but have always found this store to be the best in it?s class. Overall, I tend to find that a lot of discount bookstores sell a lot of uninteresting titles, & books you?ve never heard of. The Works does also fall into this category, but seems to also sell more bestsellers than other stores (often current ones at that), covering a wide range of authors. Books are laid out according to genre & are for the most part stacked on shelves with the cover facing forwards, so that you can see at a glance what titles are in stock. The more popular fiction & bestsellers are laid out on tables at the front of the store, with reference books & childrens books being on shelves running down the sides & back of the store...

...Student life requires budgeting, which often involves purchasing daily essentials in cheap pound shops or from chains like Morisons, Wilkinsons and the like. Unfortunately Oxford does not have many of these, The Works is about the only cheap shop there is ? though there are two or three of these (on in the Westgate Centre next to Sainsburys, one on Cornmarket Street and maybe one on the High Street). I don?t know how many branches there are nation wide; but I know there?s also a branch in Colchester, which is much the same. What do they sell? The Works is primarily a cheap book shop, but also sells stationery, art equipment and other bits and pieces from time to time. The books tend to be slightly obscure, but are often going cheap. ...This review is on that good old British shop, known only to those of us who for some reason admit to going in there as The Works. It is one of those shops that you just like to either love and/ or hate, but sadly I hate it. The Works is one of those shops that sells off all the old 'rejects' from other places, and they stock everything from books to music to craft things. They sell everything at stupidly low prices, just really for the simple reason that no-one will buy them otherwise. Take foro example an encyclopaedia of the Royal Family that would normally retail at £20 or more in one shop, but take it and put it in the works - and you are looking at probably £3 or £4 for exactly the same thing. ...The first CD in this fine collection of Stanford's choral works, this compilation delivers well. This collection focuses on the first period of his choral work, 'Cambridge Years'. Dominating the tracklisting are settings of the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis. Particularly outstanding are those in B flat and F. You cannot fail to be moved by either the depth of bass in the Nunc Dimittis of the former, or by the triumphal crescendoes in the Magnificat of the latter that demonstrate this composer's temendous ability to bring words to life. The other settings, in E flat and A, are no less majestic. However, it is perhaps hard to appreciate these as one should when they are found on the same disc as those aforementioned. ...The Works is a very nice, cheap and with great variety of books shop. I have been in several around Britain. I liked the one in Newport S. Wales but I?m shopping mainly from the one in Preston or the one in Chorley, Lancashire. The layout and the presentation of the shops are almost the same wherever I have been. They differ only in size and quantity. Why To Go There. You can go there if you want buy books really cheap. That?s a great reason to visit a shop isn?t it?
