...Camera Obscura or Tower of Tavira is to be found up the hill near the castle in Tavira. It is situated in an old disused water tower, built in 1931. Accessibility is by lift or the stairs, which encase the lift and then a small walkway to the doors of the Tower. There are the old steps up the side of the Tower but not recommended. The cost of this experience is 3-50 euro. The visit inside the Tower takes about 15 minutes, and at the most there would be 15 people inside, so not too bad for space, though when you go inside the lights are on and the inside of the old water tower is both strange and wonderful. TAVIRA A QUIET TOWN ON THE ALGARVE

...TAVIRA a small town on the Algarve, this is a very quiet place so if looking for Night Life , look elsewhere. If you are looking for Peace and Quiet and the Beauty of Nature then come to Tavira. Fly into FARO Airport, usually at the time of year we go, Early January for a pickmeup after the Xmas and New Year, I am disappointed if we have to pay more than £50 return on Easyjet from either East Midlands or Stansted. The flight times are good for us From East Mids normally 06:30 departure. Arrives FARO about 09:15. Tavira is located about 24 Kilometers towards the Spanish Boarder. We book our Transfer thru WWW.AUTO-FARO.COM They charge 40 Euros each way for the 4 of us. No extra charges that is what you pay even if flight late. They are very good and friendly, the Taxi driver will give you a little tour of Tavira...

Villa Gale Tavira in January

Advantages: Everything you want for the after Christmas rush
Disadvantages: None

...they don?t seem to bother you as they are up and out in the morning before you even think of breakfast. The town of Tavira is very quaint. We went on a horse and landau ride round the town that was very pleasant. You may see the men fishing in the main river for shall fish at low tide, but even at high tide it is very shallow. The eateries are mainly fish though as a non fish eater, I found plenty to eat, at O Patio which has a very good selection. You must go across the straight to the sand split, which they say is the largest in Europe, and we walked for a couple of hours and the only company on the beach were 4 people in the distance. They do say you can walk all the way to Faro on the split, not willing to try yet. It?s a place to go to walk and walk and just look at the sea, but remember to take some water with you as...

...When in Tavira you fancy a very enjoyable meal out then visit the O PATIO RESTAURANT. LOCATION:- Find the OLD ROMAN BRIDGE, not difficult, then with your back to the Open Air Theatre cross the bridge, on the opposite side just continue straight down the little street facing you, about 50 yards on the right hand side is O PATIO RESTAURANT. You enter by the door and prceed up the Staircase. You will pass a chilled display of the Fresh Caught Today fish on offer. In the restaurant is another chilled display of the Meat on offer. There is a small bar and then tables in Three Areas (rooms). There is also a Open Air Patio that must be delightful in the Summer. ...We have just been to Tavira, it is our 3rd visit in 5 years. Our first visit was like a breath of fresh air as I had just lost my brother on Christmas Day and my brother-in-law on New Years Day. We had booked to go well before our losses, and flew off with saddened heart. If you require peace, quiet and restfulness then this is the place to go. Catch the little ferry out to the sand split and walk, walk, walk. We have never got to the end of the split in the visits that we have taken. We have promised ourselves that we will on one of our visits. On this trip on the split, none of the bars are open so you need to take water with you as the sun is quiet warm and very little shade once walking, though this time we set off to catch the ferry back into the town when we heard music and we saw one of the bars open. ...On our recent trip to Tavira this was the Restaurant we used on our second night. See my review on O PATIO restaurant, which we used on the other two nights. The Alcatruz is in fact next door to the PATIO, so the directions are the same. Locate the ROMAN BRIDGE, cross the Bridge from the Open Air Theatre side, proceed for about 60 yards down the street oposite the end of the bridge, and there is the ALCUTRUZ on the right hand side. It has a double frontage and two doors, one of which says enter, but tends to stick, but make yourself evident and they WILL open it for you. ...the small newsagents in the back streets out of season. In august santa luzia is very popular with potrtuguese tourists, expect a long wait at any restaurant unless pre-booked. Restaurant O mourao serves a 3 course lunch complete with wine and coffee for just7 euros. There are a couple of late night bars notably meia pippa which boasts live music most weekends and Mundo run by a lovley scottish couple emma and fergus. Ther is an excellent B&B casa da Ria run by Jorge and Tensi Hermann where I have stayed many times prior to my property purchase and apartments to rent are plentiful but again it is essential to pre-book in august. A short ride on the ferry or a 1 euro ride on the mini train up at Pedras Del Rei takes you over to the Isle de tavira or Barril beaches. ...Santa Luzia is the fishing village in Portugal that we stayed in at Easter. We flew from Luton to Faro picked up our rental car and drove the 25 k to Santa Luzia. Santa Luzia is near Tavira. Santa Luzia is only about 30k from the Spanish border. Santa Luzia is a quiet fishing village on the Ria Formosa, separated from the long sandy beach by a shallow lagoon that opens out to the Atlantic Ocean. Fishing boats and a ferry use this as a harbour. The long sandy beach called Barril beach is easily accessible by either foot, a 15 minute walk or by a small tourist train, (1 euro I think. cars are not allowed. This is a blue flag beech. . When we went at Easter the town and beach was very quiet. One day we walked onto the sand dunes behind the beach and then along the beach. BOOKING.COM is another site that often appears to be the cheapest when we trawl HOTELSCOMPARISON.COM. We booked for Vila Gale in Tavira Portugal for our January trip. Booking process was very easy, we had two double Rooms with Buffet Breakfast and Pool View (Pool View was 1 Euro per night per room, Saga were Charging 2 Euros per person per night) (Total cost per room for the 3 nights was £87, thats B&B at less than £15 per person) You get Email Confirmation and you print your Voucher Off to present to Hotel. The previous September my Brother Rob, and his by far better half Roz had been caught up in the XL Failure so had ended up with a replacement holiday in Cabanas, a small town juts an 8 Euro Taxi ride from Tavira. So on the Sunday Luch we tripped over to Cabanas, there were six on this jaunt, Rob/Roz Anne and Daughter Sheryl and Jane and I.
