10 PLACES I MISS.
Review of 10 best places to visit in Britian by  thingywhatsit

Advantages: They make memories.
Disadvantages: The cost of getting there.

...with tourists. I went late in the afternoon and found the hush and tranquility that I remember from childhood and although I missed the last bus to the top of the hill, did find a local resident who gave us a lift. TAVISTOCK I visit Tavistock on each trip down memory lane because I went to school there and love this market town. It offers people so many things. Firstly, there are the parks which run beside the canal, and super swimming pool with water features. Taking the path beside the river on the other side of the park is nice as well, because as you approach the cattle market end of town, you have waterfalls nestled under the shelter of trees, and on a hot day, this really is a nice part of Tavistock. Tavistock is a market town and has a covered Market which is always interesting as its contents vary so much with each visit. From... Read review

A LITTLE LOOK INTO MY WORLD
Review of All About Me by  LILL07

Advantages: A life that i have made for myself
Disadvantages: Never knowing what's around the corner

...Age. D.O.B:- I turned 29 in february on the 12th and was born in 1977. Place of birth:- Oakhampton Devon i only lived here for a few months after i was born so can only tell you that Oakhampton is a small town. Places i have lived:- After my parent's and i left Oakhampton we moved in with my nan in tavistock which is also in devon but again we only lived here for a few month's, after leaving tavistock we moved in with my other nan in torquay while waiting for our house in kingskerswell to be finished, then we moved to kingskerswell for 2 years before settling down in Newton Abbot where i live now and my parent's still live in the house i grew up in. Sibling's:- I have a younger sister mandy she is 27 and live's in kingsteighton with her husband of 2 years but whom she has been with since she was 16 they have a 2 year old... Read review

Lost in Devon? Eat in Gulworthy!
Review of The Harvest Home (Gulworthy, Devon) by  thebattler

Advantages: The only pub for miles! Good food for travellers.
Disadvantages: It's in the middle of nowhere!

...If you're ever travelling through Devon and Cornwall via Tavistock on a cold tiring journey and fancy a meal, drop into the Harvest Home for a warm welcome. If you head out of Tavistock on the A390 and follow the winding roads you'll come to a fork in the road signposted for Morwellham Quay where the Harvest Home greets you on the left. We've stopped here several times as there aren't many other pubs on route. Luckily they do a good range of pub grub and stock real ales for those of you who like a sample the lesser known pints. It isn't open on Tuesdays but for the rest of the week food is served from 12-2.30, then from 7-9pm. Run by Alistair and Elizabeth, the pub, which is a Free House has a friendly atmosphere without the predictable grind of the endless supply of pub chains we are so used to. They take all major credit cards... Read review

camping in a civilised manner
Review of Fox and Hounds Hotel, Okehampton, Dartmoor National Park by  Miskah

Advantages: on the edge of Dartmoor national park, bar always open for good food and drinks
Disadvantages: none in my view

...I’ve not actually slept in the Fox and Hounds but I’ve spent plenty of time sleeping in their garden and I’d best explain that comment quickly before you imagine im so drunk I cant get home ! The Fox and Hounds has Dartmoor national park right behind it. In a field behind the hotel they allow camping in tents, caravans and motor homes. I’ve spent a fair bit of time eating and drinking inside though. This is a really nice place and it was a hard decision whether or not to add it here. It would be a real shame if get clogged up, because as odd as it sounds for a place on the edge of Dartmoor national park, its not used as much as you would expect. I suspect the main reason it remains generally reasonable is because a couple of metres from the door runs the A386 road. This is a main road which connects Okehampton and Tavistock... Read review

Meet Me On The Corner
Review of London Ciao Meet by  Soho_Black

Advantages: Fun times, with friends new and old
Disadvantages: They all ended

...the last Tube is a pain in the backside! Tavistock 4 – Tavistock, Devon - Friday July 26th 2002 People you may know: JohnV, mumagain, Ozzy01, epiphany, nikkisly. Although I sadly had to pull out of a (later cancelled) Scotland Meet the week before due to a house move, this Meet was a combination of holiday and Meet for me. I moved house, unpacked, repacked, and headed West. Although not a Meet as such, the early part of the week was my first chance to meet my good friend Ophelia, who had invited me to stay with her and her husband for a couple of days, before I headed down to stay with Nikkisly. This isn’t how I would normally recommend anyone meet someone for the first time – she invited me into her house without fear, and when I arrived it was only the two of us. Fortunately, we’d come to know each other very well beforehand... Read review

Free Theatrical Fantasy
Review of Theatre Museum (London) by  Alican

Advantages: Free, interesting displays, fun for everyone
Disadvantages: none

...This museum, a branch of the Victoria and Albert museum, is situated in London's theatre land on Tavistock Street, right next to Covent Garden. The museum displays the history of theatre fom Elizabethan times to the modern day. It has displays, minature models of theatres, film footage, programmes, paintings of actors, costumes and props and so much more. Their current special display is of photographs of actors backstage during performances. The gallery is laid out like the backstage area of a theatre with dressing rooms, long corridoors and even a toilet and shower, all housing pictures of the famous as they prepare for there performances. Whilst the museum is anything but large by London standards, it still manages to house a surprisingly large amount of information and I have not once visited and felt it was crowded or too... Helping history to live
Review of Living History by  JOHNV

Advantages: see text
Disadvantages: none

...we need to consult the encyclopedias or, occasionally, go online and ask google. Two pages are devoted to ‘Past Notes and Queries’, and ‘Quick Queries’, questions sent in by readers, from letters and e-mails. ‘Footsteps’ is a concise guide to various places in the UK worth a visit, and each month it aims to find one or two in each region. This month’s selection includes the copper mines visitor centre at Morwellham Quay, Tavistock, Devon, the Norman castle at Tamworth, Staffordshire, and the timber-framed Tudor house of Little Moreton Hall, Congleton, Cheshire. No history journal would be complete without an extensive section for reviews of new books, so naturally you’ll find several pages of that here; BBC History Direct can supply all featured titles by post at discounts on the published price. This includes the Top Ten history... Read review

Getting away from Plymouth
Review of Plymouth in General by  MRANDREWSJK

Advantages: It's near Cornwall
Disadvantages: Not near enough though

...came off of my car at the same time but I decided I wasn't staying THERE, so drove on anyway to the safety of nearby Tavistock, which is also a lovely market town just on the borders of Devon and Cornwall and supped of a well deserved pint whilst the RAC fixed the car. For several of these reasons I've decided to plan my fantasy meeting of Ciao members in another op on Dartmoor. Another alternative from Plymouth is to take the free car ferry across to Cornwall. There is also the alternative of going over the river by the road bridge, which at the last time I went was a very attractive one built by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and well worth seeing, but I thought I'd mention the ferry to prove I'd been there and not copying this from a book and to give you an alternative. One ends up not more than about 15 miles from some lovely seaside... Read review

Come on down to Devon.
Review of Ilfracombe (England) by  danthepianoman

Advantages: There is lots to do for all the family.
Disadvantages: It is your typical seaside town.

...Ilfracombe is a seaside resort on the northern Devon coast, and on a good and clear day you can see south Wales - but just don't let that put you off coming here. How do I get there? Chances are you are coming from Bristol's general direction, and so if you are then carry on down the M5 until you reach junction 27. You will see Barnstaple signposted, and so follow these signs for there and once you get closer you will the signs for Ilfracombe starting to appear on the side of the roads. If you are coming from Plymouth, then just follow the Tavistock road across the moors until you hit Okehampton, and then keep going and following the signposts - initiall
