Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony: Refined passion

Advantages: Great passion, beautiful melodies, unrestrained romanticism
Disadvantages: The finale doesn't quite convince in it's purpose

...and distinctly external force that crushes our hope with brute force. In the Fifth, Fatum is not quite so overstated, but is perhaps even more terrifying. Here Fatum appears in the form of an idée fixe, a term coined by Berlioz in his Symphonie fantastique for a fixed idea that stubbornly reappears in every movement (a kind of precursor of Wagner's leitmotif). Rather than being a forceful entity appearing amid dreams of happiness, Fatum in the Fifth is more all-enveloping, intruding more subtlely into every germ of our mind. This makes the Fifth perhaps a more refined and less destructive work than the Fourth for casual listeners, but is no less powerful. MINOR CRITICISMS Tchaikovsky set to work on the symphony in May 1888, finishing the score in August of the same year. The work was premiered in St.Petersburg on November 17, 1888 under...

Tchaikovsky's Fourth

Advantages: Very exciting and powerful piece of emotional hysteria
Disadvantages: If you're obsessed with classical form and beauty, then this might just be too much

.... On a more positive note, 1877 saw the beginning of the friendship between Tchaikovsky and the wealthy Moscow widow, Nadezhda von Meck. She would become Tchaikovsky's most devoted patroness, pulling him out of his severe financial difficulties. Their relationship, however, was one of strange mystery. In accordance for a generous annual sum, she stipulated that they would never meet, conducting their relationship entirely through correspondence. Even during the very few occasions that they did meet in person, no word passed between them. Among the 1200 letters that passed between them, one of the first contained a detailed programme on his new symphony, where he would give free reign to all of his barred emotions and struggles. (Madame von Meck's later composer friends also included the young Claude Debussy who served as a pianist at her house...

GUSTAV MAHLER'S LAST- SYMPHONY NO. 10

Advantages: Embodies some of Mahlers most notable music qualities.
Disadvantages: Unfinished.

...and Naxos. There are many versions played by various orchestra's and in different decades to choose from, the most recent notable one has been Simon Rattle's Berlin orchestra's performance. Overall if you like Mahler this is a definite buy, if you are new to Mahler get this as part of a compliation package, if new to classical music perhaps sample it before you purchase. --- AVAILABILITY --- There are many labels and different recordings of this that is hard to suggest which one to go for. You can buy it stand alone or as a compilation of Mahlers other music. If you are new to Mahler buy a complilation of his other scores too as he has so many other offerings (Symphony No. 1 is one of my favourites). If you have some Mahler music already then I would suggest the Naxos label which has Symphony No. 10 all on its own for around £5....

MAHLER CREATED THIS ON HOLIDAY - SYMPHONY NO.4

Advantages: Varied movements, esp. 1st and 4th. One of Mahler's most popular works.
Disadvantages: 2nd movement a little weak.

...magnificently onto the 4th and final movement which has the addition of a soprano voice. It is at the beginning fast-paced before tailing off into to calm and hopefully leaving you in that state. --- CONCLUSION --- Like so many classical scores these days it can be found very cheaply. In fact I have recently noticed many reductions in prices of classical labels, including HMV's own (down from £4.99 to £2.99 for some very popular classics) and 5 CD's for £20 on the Naxos label. I would consider the first and last movement of Mahler's symphony no.4 to be the most worthwhile, while the middle two utilize parts of both the others, but lack the distinctiveness remaining. Compared to the other Mahler score I have reviewed I personally would place it above that in terms of quality and originality, but there are plenty of places online and offline to...

Spiros... A Stunning Little Greek In Naxos

Advantages: Close to The Beach
Disadvantages: The Rooms in the Original Building are Quite Dated

...know!! The 'Naxos Star' arrives in port following 2 rather nice looking 'Vodaphone' ferries - a local sponsor of ferries in Greece. It is by no means a 'star' but quite old and rusty and I spend the first 30 minutes after our departure watching my precariously stacked luggage on the back of the boat - expecting it to fall into the sea at any minute. Still the beer helps, and the grumpy bar tender supplies us with more at 2 euros a shot! and I happily sit watching the scenery, and people watching!!. We dock at Paros - and several fellow travellers depart, we then continue on to Naxos - the whole sea transfer taking around 2 hours. The arrival at Hora is scary to say the least - it is like a cattle market, we grab our cases and run - there are touts for campsites and hotels everywhere - I thought I was a superstar - i've never had so...

Can this really be No 1 in Lincoln?

Advantages: Great food, reasonably priced
Disadvantages: You may need to book to get a table on the weekend

...Ever since I first stepped foot on the Bailgate area of Lincoln, the Thailand No 1 restaurant has appealed to me. This award winning restaurant, close to the Cathedral and Castle, is contemporary in décor and since I moved into the city a few weeks ago, I was dying to seize the moment to eat here. That opportunity came when I had a friend over to stay and we had decided to go out to eat. My friend was pretty flexible with dining options, and there are plenty of different choices on the Bailgate, but I do find Thai food difficult to turn down. We entered the restaurant at around 700pm on a Saturday night, and my first impressions were the sheer size of the place, and its popularity. From the street, I had only seen the first third of the restaurant, but there is a second room behind, and a conservatory area beyond that, all of which...

Beethoven's symphonies: the rediscovered frontier

Advantages: A new way to hear Beethoven
Disadvantages: Surpassed by some later period cycles

...'s cycle of symphonies have since been reinterpreted by the likes of Gardiner, Mackerras, Zinman and even Norrington himself that have by now surpassed the original Norrington set, but there is a certain historical value to that 1989 set that was the first to take Beethoven in this direction and breaking a tradition that had been in vogue since the composer's death in 1827. In 2001 they were re-released on the Virgin label and are still readily available in a set of five CD. THE SYMPHONIES Symphony No.1 in C major, Op.21 The First Symphony is one of the best of the set. The overall Classical feel of the symphony most readily lends the sound of the older instruments appealing and give this work a sense of power that often seems to be missing in modern performances. The first movement has such bubbling good humor that is frankly...

Gangster No.1

Advantages: It is based on real life notorious Mobster Frankie Fraser
Disadvantages: This film may dont be everyone's cup of tea due to the volience showed

...Gangster No.1 was released in 2000 where Lock, Stock and Two smoking Barrels and Snatch where the two highly praised best British Gangster films. With these two gangster films out Gangster had a lot to live up to, and it did just.that. The violent story of the rise and fall of an East End London gangster, starting in swinging 1968 Soho, and spanning 30 years it shows brutal murder, sticking torture coming from the eyes of the victim and also by the about of times the word Cunt is used though out in the film. But also did you know that Freddy Mays is based on real-life notorious mobster named Frankie Fraser. The film starts with a group of friends at a boxing match dinner at a deluxe London hotel, Gangster now aging sits at the top of the table, (played by Malcolm McDowell) becomes upset when hearing...is due to be released from...

GANGSTER NO. 1 review

Advantages:
Disadvantages:

...Starring: Malcolm McDowell, Paul Bettany, David Thewlis, Saffron Burrows Directed by Paul McGuigan Gangster No. 1 is the latest in a long line of British-made-and-based gangster (natch) movies which started to come out of the woodwork, it seems, after the success of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. However, unlike Lock Stock, Circus and all it's brethren, Gangster No. 1 eschews the black comedy and quirky characterisation recently seen in the genre, preferring instead to remain stony faced throughout. And also unlike Lock Stock, I can safely say that this won't be successful enough to get it's own spin-off TV series. The story starts in the present day, with the main protagonist, who remains unnamed throughout (a la Fight Club, although he's credited as Gangster 55), played by Malcolm McDowell, enjoying a boxing match...

No!!... It's No.1

Advantages: can be bought from many shops, can be recycled, easy to use
Disadvantages: its rather expensive

...I have used Lexmark ink cartridge since we got our Lexmark x5200 printer at the beginning of last year which was compatible with the Lexmark cartridge No.33. Lexmark No.33 is a colour ink cartridge which can be used by various Lexmark printers including series X3300, P900, X7100, X5200, P4300 etc. The colour cartridge is made of three colours of course (yellow, cyan and magenta). I've never really had problems with the cartridge at all; it is actually the printer which I had problems with as it died on us, which was rather a shame, Therefore we bought another brand printer, so no need of buying the Lexmark No.33. However the cartridge is very easy to insert. You just open the small red box, and use a scissors to cut the thick silver plastic, were the cartridge is stored. There is a little colourless strip which you got to...
