Teac reference 300 - best mini system under £1000
Review of Teac REF 300 DAB MK III by
psilk
Advantages: Great Sound, Great Looks, Great Price
Disadvantages: Remotes a bit cheap, no USB port,
...Having been in the market to downsize my old hi fi for something more compact, I've settled on the Teac reference 300 mkIII with DAB tuner. Its a 3 box system as opposed to the other smaller one box systems manufactured by Teac and others such as Denon, Arcam and Onkyo. As such, although being larger, it is more user friendly to use and has more power at 45 wpc RMS. At around £500 rrp it stands up favourably in price to the Arcam Solo Mini and comes in silver or black finish with machined aluminium fronts and a classy blue display on each unit. It actually appears slightly retro in appearance although the remotes are a bit cheap looking. The silver units can be found for as little as £349 without speakers so its quite a bargain.
Sound quality for such a small unit is really clear and well defined with a warm bass typical of Teac...

My Unbiased review of the Teac CRL600
Review of Teac CRL600 by
IanOnline
Advantages: Compact, yet Powerful
Disadvantages: None
...After re-aranging our lounge a decision was made that the black clunky stacking hi-fi had to go, so a search on the internet and a visit to the Richer Sounds website led me initially to the Denon DM31.
I visited my local Richer sounds shop in Norwich the following day with the intention of purchasing a Denon, but a very helpful assistant informed me if I was to run powerful speakers such as mine (Bose Acoustimass 5) I would be better off with the Teac CRL600 with a higher wattage.
I hesitated as I had no info on this model, but decided to go with it when he assured me if I wasnt happy I could return it within 14days.
I plugged it all in at home and WOW I was very impressed. Far superior than my stacking ugly system. This unit sits beneath my tv ontop of the DVD player and looks well at home.
The audio quality from the CD and radio...

Good option.
Review of Teac Reference 500 by
dazzle
Advantages: Nice looking, nice sounding, reasonable value for money.
Disadvantages: Upgrades are not that enticing and the remote control does not send out a strong signal.
...but have not received a response. One solution is to buy a "learning remote" and teach it all the Teac functions. Maybe the remote problem has been fixed since I bought the system, but worth checking before buying.
My second gripe is that, yes you can upgrade the system with new units but they don't seem that competitive. For example the Teac MD500 is £349 whilst I know I can spend £250 on the Sony MDS JB940 and get a minidisc deck that is superior in every department. The only thing that the Sony cannot do is to blend in with the mini size or gold styling of the Teac system.
As such if you buy a new remote control then I can heartily recommend this system for a second room or bedroom (particularly with the alarm function) however, if you're hoping to upgrade it later with the minidisc or cinema amp then don't expect to have a state...

Love cinema? Cineworld Unlimited Card
Review of Cineworld Cinemas by
koshkha
Advantages: Great value if you use it
Disadvantages: Can be cheaper to pay as you go
...NOTE - THIS REVIEW RELATES TO CINEWORLD'S UNLIMITED CINEMA CARD RATHER THAN CINEWORLD IN TOTAL OR THEIR WEBSITE. I REQUESTED THIS TOPIC AND HAVE BEEN DIRECTED BY CIAO TO WRITE IT HERE SO PLEASE DON'T RATE IT AS OFF-TOPIC - IT'S THEIR FAULT NOT MINE.
*************************************
I used to live in Suffolk not far from Bury St Edmunds. For many years there had been proposals to build a multiplex cinema and the fighting by both sides had been intense. In Suffolk the yes/no camps for a multiplex were as firmly entrenched as the yes/no campaigners for fox-hunting, adoption of the Euro or banning smoking in public places. The situation appeared intractable and so the only local cinema option was an inappropriately named ABC Cinema - I say inappropriate because it only had two small screens - more of an 'ab' than and 'ABC...

UGC: Unbelievably Great Cinema
Review of UGC Cinema by
Guru-On-A-Mountain
Advantages: 19 screens means loads of films to choose from!
Disadvantages: Sweets are rather expensive.
...When this monstrous building was erected in the heart of Glasgow, I was a few years younger than I am now and not much of a cinema-goer. My dad told me it was the tallest cinema in Europe and I was impressed, but when I was dragged along by him to see a film there, my first experience was horrendous. First of all, their listings displayed on Teletext and outside the cinema were wrong and the film I was wanting to see wasn't actually playing, although Teletext and their billboards outside said it was. Then, when we finally decided on something else (as there was hardly anything on until later that night), we had to wait in a huge, slow-moving queue to get our tickets. The place was jam-packed with people and you could barely get moving, and it was just entirely unpleasant.
It's no surprise, then, that I was somewhat reluctant to go...

A M-agnificent C-inema?
Review of AMC Great Northern Cinema Manchester by
zoe_page
Advantages: Loyalty scheme, freebies, low prices
Disadvantages: No individual scoop ice cream
...Since January we’ve been to a Manchester cinema up to 6 times each week to take advantage of various free tickets or other offers, or just because there are some films we just *have* to see. Since Manchester city centre has only 3 decent cinemas (the UCI, the Odeon and this place) we end up here quite a bit. The AMC is the newest addition for cinema goers in Manchester and we go there, oh, at least once a week because of the freebies (see later). It’s a strange place because it’s very open plan – the box office is in the middle of the concourse on the 1st floor (from where you can also access the Virgin Fitness centre and, in the future, several restaurants and shops). After getting your tickets, you take the escalator to the floor above, where they are checked, and you are allowed through to the food stands and loos and screens. So from...

Europes tallest cinema
Review of UGC Cinema by
MJKerr
Advantages: price, location, choice
Disadvantages: lack of parking
...[Updated 01/01/03, details at bottom]
Opened on 21 September 2000, as Europes tallest cinema at 12 storeys high, with 18 screens.
Typically showing 22 films this is by far the biggest choice in Central Scotland.
Located next to Cambridge Street carpark, Buchanan Bus Station, Queen Street Railway Station and Buchanan underground these are the best ways to travel to the venue, as parking in Glasgow is severely restrcited and pricey. (If driving into Glasgow the Odeon at The Quay will be cheaper, but not as good)
The cinema opens at 10:45 (unless there are early screenings for new releases).
"Early bird" tickets are available for all screenings before 12:00, currently £3.
Sign postings to the screens is amazingly poor, but I think they assume you know you have to go upstairs!
Access is via escalator or lifts.
The screens...

Discover the best of European cinema
Review of Cinema 16 - European Short Films DVD by
gantzgraf
Advantages: A fantastic collection of shorts.
Disadvantages: None.
...Cinema16 is a fantastic compilation of European short films, giving you a glimpse at some of the most undervalued cinematographic handiworks, many who were crafted by some of the leading voices of modern cinema, such as Danish director Lars Von Trier, the controversial English comedian Chris Morris, and even the madcap French director, behind the infamous Dobermann (1999-2000), Jan Kounen.
The funny thing about the Cinema16 DVD is that there is no rating to be found on the box; especially funny when you consider the strictness of the BBFC, and also, it's occasionally ridiculous ratings (for example, Rosemary's Baby being rated 18 - pathetic).
Cinema16 could be considered a "certified 15" in my opinion.
Individually, the short lengths vary between 8 and 20 minutes, frequently between 10 and 15 minutes, bringing the whole 16 shorts...

http://www.cinema.scoot.co.uk/
Review of http://www.cinema.scoot.co.uk/ - http://www.cinema.scoot.co.uk/ by
Lukey
Advantages: Lots of reviews
Disadvantages: Unable to buy tickets online!
...The most accessible, accurate and easy-to-use film finder on the Web. Scoot even provides directions to the cinema, along with information on the facilities provided and potted reviews of the films on offer.
Simple, uncluttered and extremely effective.
Maybe it dosen't match up to some of the other sites such as www.odeon.co.uk where you can book online, but Scoot does actually seem to be attracting viewers, by the hundreds so they have got to be doing something right, I based my trip to the cinema on a review, and I liked the film so they have got their facts right!...

Maidenhead Odeon Cinema - stay away!!
Review of Odeon Cinema by
spidercallum
Advantages: there wasn't any!
Disadvantages: no food or drink, dirty, screens didn't work, didn't show any of the top movies
...I don't know anything about Maidenhead to be honest, but I'm pretty sure this is the only cinema there. I was away staying at me girlfriends Nan's last week, and we wanted to go to the cinema. We went swimming first, which is why we were at Maidenhead in the first place.
Anyway, we got there at about midday, and couldn't wait to sit down and enjoy our movie... At the time we weren't one hundred percent sure what we wanted to see... I wanted to see the new Batman film, however my girlfriend hadn't seen any of the other Batman films and wanted to see them before spending £7 on seeing the newest one. So we decided we'd see that another time. We both wanted see Wall-E, and had both heard pretty good things about it - and we'd both been laughing at the films trailer the night before when we saw it on TV! So we'd finally decided what film...
