H300 series
Advantages: Supports multiple codecs, easy to use
Disadvantages: Slightly bulky once in case. Battery isn't so great.
...The iRiver H300 series (covering H320, H320SE, H340, H340SE, where 20 and 40 are 20GB and 40GB respectively, and SE is the light edition which doesn't come with a remote) is an excellent jukebox. I call it a jukebox, not only because it says it is one, but calling it an MP3 player would not suffice. This device supports multiple codecs, including MP3, WMA, OGG-Vorbis, WAV, ASF, AVI (using MP4 compression), and many more (you may have to update the firmware to achieve these). This makes it an ideal player for those who have songs in different formats, and don't want to lose quality and money converting them into MP3. Or for people who want excellent quality in a small file size, choose to use OGG-Vorbis (.ogg). Personally, I find this the best compression, and is on comparison to (if not beating) the MPEG-4 Audio (.m4a used by the i...

Nice little number
Advantages: Good value
Disadvantages: nil
...The TEAC 300 mini Hi Fi is a small stacking seperates system. This shiny aluminium system is great to look at, simple to use, has brilliant sound quality when used with decent speakers, and is good value for money.
The seperates comprise of a tuner and amp, a cassette deck and a compact disc player. It has the opertunity to add a mini disc, which is around £200 more. Oh I nearly forgot to say that the cost of the already mentioned units come to around £599.
The speakers are not generally supplied with this unit and a good set of infinity, or JBL speakers costing around £200 are a perfect match.
The advantage of such a system is that it can be added to at any stage and upgraded for minimal cost (in hi fi terms!).
The unit is so nice to look at it is not worth hiding away in a wooden cabinet, but should be displayed on top...

A bit of a nerd
Advantages: Total hands free
Disadvantages: Makes you look like a bit of a nerd
...Having purchased my new Motorola L6 with free £15 airtime and bluetooth headset, it was time to have a little play about and see how good each item was.
Now I have to say from the outset that I am a gadget freak, I buy them, play with them then do what everyone else does with them and store them in a drawer somewhere. So I had no reason to believe that this smart looking Motorola H300 bluetooth headset was going to be any different.
On removing the rather primitive packaging and glancing briefly at the accompanying instructions I found myself ready to go in under a minute. Even for the totally uninformed this time scale is easily achievable being that all you really have to do is insert the AAA battery.
There are 3 buttons and a small blue light on the funky looking device, the top small button is volume up the bottom small...

Teac reference 300 - best mini system under £1000
Advantages: Great Sound, Great Looks, Great Price
Disadvantages: Remotes a bit cheap, no USB port,
...Having been in the market to downsize my old hi fi for something more compact, I've settled on the Teac reference 300 mkIII with DAB tuner. Its a 3 box system as opposed to the other smaller one box systems manufactured by Teac and others such as Denon, Arcam and Onkyo. As such, although being larger, it is more user friendly to use and has more power at 45 wpc RMS. At around £500 rrp it stands up favourably in price to the Arcam Solo Mini and comes in silver or black finish with machined aluminium fronts and a classy blue display on each unit. It actually appears slightly retro in appearance although the remotes are a bit cheap looking. The silver units can be found for as little as £349 without speakers so its quite a bargain.
Sound quality for such a small unit is really clear and well defined with a warm bass typical of Teac...

My Unbiased review of the Teac CRL600
Advantages: Compact, yet Powerful
Disadvantages: None
...After re-aranging our lounge a decision was made that the black clunky stacking hi-fi had to go, so a search on the internet and a visit to the Richer Sounds website led me initially to the Denon DM31.
I visited my local Richer sounds shop in Norwich the following day with the intention of purchasing a Denon, but a very helpful assistant informed me if I was to run powerful speakers such as mine (Bose Acoustimass 5) I would be better off with the Teac CRL600 with a higher wattage.
I hesitated as I had no info on this model, but decided to go with it when he assured me if I wasnt happy I could return it within 14days.
I plugged it all in at home and WOW I was very impressed. Far superior than my stacking ugly system. This unit sits beneath my tv ontop of the DVD player and looks well at home.
The audio quality from the CD and radio is...

Ohhh you can't half multi-task!!
Advantages: I don't get shouted at
Disadvantages: I look like fool
...say!! I've only had a paired a week though so there's still time for every thing to go wrong!!
Now came the fun part, working out how to use it!! To be completely hands free, you hold down the call button and say the name of who you want to call, but alas, no matter how many times i try to match my voice to my recorded voice i cannot. And i end up getting very irrate, that i cant immpersonnate my own voice!!
So i end up call via the handset.
Receiving calls are far easier, the H300 plays a lovely little tune in your ear and you once again press your call button and your set. To hang up you simple press the call button again! Simple.
Volume controls are little bit fiddly but once set you dont really have to fiddle that much!!
I would definately recommend getting a handsfree kit, and this one is a fine one, its comfy, i tend...

Understated Excellence
Advantages: Straightforward no frills tape deck
Disadvantages: Few
...Teac have been in operating the electronics industry for over 50 years, and whilst they don't often feature in most people's list top five manufacturers, their reputation for building no-nonsense tape drives is well established.
Compact Cassette was first launched in the UK 1964 by electronics giant Philips. The first Walkman was introduced by Sony in 1979
By 1982 sales of pre-recorded tapes overtook standard vinyl albums, however by 1993 this was eclipsed by sales of Compact Disks.
Ten years on, and we have DVD, Minidisk, MP3 and the likes, so how come people still hang on to their cassette decks, and how come it still serves as the most popular audio format for people on the move?
The simple answer is cost.
Cassette based Walkmans and car audio systems are still significantly cheaper than the CD based rivals.

Good option.
Advantages: Nice looking, nice sounding, reasonable value for money.
Disadvantages: Upgrades are not that enticing and the remote control does not send out a strong signal.
...I was drawn to the Teac 500 system because I wanted something more "high-fidelity" than an Aiwa all-in-one unit but didn't want to mix and match units.
The advantage of having separates is that you can change units and therefore upgrade the system. Over time Teac have added various options such as 7 disc CD player, DVD player, AV amp.
The advantage of having separates all designed by Teac is that the system has one remote control, can serve as an alarm clock and is semi-intelligent. For example, if I switch the amp from CD to tuner, the CD player automatically stops.
I added a pair of Mission 701s to it and have found that it sounds superb.
I have two gripes though:
The remote control looks good, has all the required functions but has to be used 10cm away from the unit. I have e-mailed Teac to ask if they have a solution...
