...I have been doing supply teaching for over a year now. I thought I?d write about my experiences and give some advice to those who might be thinking of supply work. BACKGROUND: I trained to be a teacher in 2006-7. I had never wanted to be a teacher, it was never something I always dreamed of being. I had always planned to be a lawyer. However, after studying History at university I knew that I wanted to work with the subject. I went on to do a Masters in museum studies and thought seriously about working in that field but the money was really bad and there were a lot of people trying to get very few jobs. I took a year out to think and to earn some money. Primary teaching

Advantages: interesting, enjoyable, rewarding, fun
Disadvantages: huge workload, irritating children

...I am in the fourth and final year of my teaching degree, which will qualify me to teach in both a primary and secondary school setting although my specialist subject is ICT. As part of my teacher training I have spent two placements teaching in Primary Schools and two teaching in Secondary Schools. This review will take a look at what it is actually like teaching in a Primary School based on my experience. My first primary placement was for several weeks in a year three class in Portslade. All pupils were from a very socially deprived area. My second primary placement was in a school in Hastings where the children were also from a socially deprived area. Teaching me ECDL? Well, sort of...

Advantages: Clear instructions, Interactive, Inexpensive
Disadvantages: Variable sound quality, Uses older version of Office

...on Amazon, but I chose this one because it was competitively priced, had a good user rating on the site (five stars), and was described as a "one stop training package for anyone who wants to pass their ECDL". The book and CD ROM balanced each other out in terms of study methods, and I recommend this as a good approach if you already have a reasonable level of IT literacy; if you are more of a beginner or lack confidence, then it might be worth considering paying more for a tutored course. "Teaching You ECDL" was aimed squarely at beginners, so anyone who could power up a PC and put the CD in it would be able to use it; installation was quick and very simple, and within minutes it was ready to go (although there are instructions on the back of the cover sleeve if you get stuck).
