A great CD-R drive
Review of HP Plus 9300i by
smoran
Advantages:
Disadvantages:
...This drive is excellent, really easy to install, and really nice to use. Comes complete with Adaptec software which is probably the best on the market in my opinion, very easy to use and navigate. The documentation that comes with the product is good, and so is the technical support that H P offer you as standard. Good buy, go get it !

Good, but maybe not better than ts predecessors
Review of Technics SL-PG 5 by
QuinnTheEskimo
Advantages: Optical outs, headphone outs, all the things you need on a CD player
Disadvantages: Not as reliable on damaged CDs
...I purchased two of these to replace ageing Technics SL-PG470s, and they boast several features not seen on the 470. These have optical outputs, which considering how easy it is to add, no CD player should be sold without. Thet also have headphone sockets on the front with a volume control. However, we have noticed that with several scratched and damaged CDs which the 470s could read perfectly, the 590 is not nearly so forgiving. I'm not sure that the 590 is better than its predecessor - some good points but may be outweighed by the bad points....

A CD player that you can trust!!!
Review of Technics SL-PD 7 by
jameslucjan
Advantages: Simple and it works!!!!
Disadvantages: can some times be a little bulky
...I need a CD player that was going to be reliable, hard working, simple to use and easy to connect up to a master music system or a PA system.
With all these things in mind I decided to go for the brand name that I believe to be the most reliable, Technics!!!
I had a choice between this system and a Sony product and because my master music system is Sony brand I was very tempted to keep it all the same for compatibility reasons. I eventually decided to take the risk and go for Technics. I have never looked back!!!!!
You can approach this machine in two ways, as a civilian (in terms of music equipment) or as a veteran of the music world. Either way you will not be disappointed with it.
It has a face that is extremely simple to use; play, pause, stop and track select all clearly visible on the remote control and on the main unit...

Prompt Service and Good Price
Review of qed-uk.com by
BNibbles
Advantages: Easy to navigate. Good level of information.
Disadvantages: Obviously you can't maul the goods first, but you don't expect to.
...I recently needed to replace a CD Player that was going west. Having latched onto the idea of a CD-Player that was both CD-R and CD-RW compatible, I found a suitable Yamaha model (I have also written about this). I looked through all the electronics sites that I have on my Favourites List, and QED was the most competitive. Their site gives pictures and full technical spec if you drill deeper, which is very useful if you can't find a hi-fi store to get some hands-on experience.
You get an immediate indication whether the item is in stock, and delivery was prompt, arriving on the day they said it would.
What more can you say - from about 6 sites, they were the cheapest, and delivered it quickly. QED!...

Brilliant, Long Lasting Entry Level CD Player
Review of Technics SLPG 580 A by
mattpone
Advantages: Reliable Sound Quality, Solid Construction, Optical Out, Remote
Disadvantages: none come to mind
...You can pick up one of these CD players, second hand, for between £40 and £80 nowadays and they are virtually indestructible.
A friend has owned one for the last 5 years for doing discos and it is covered in scratches and dents after being thrown around in cars and vans. Now I'm not suggesting this is how you should treat hi-fi equipment, but it is testament to the build quality of these units!
The other main advantage is that it will play copied cd's, whether they are from a hi-fi cd recorder or from a pc, which some earlier units would not.
The laser in these Technics players is brilliant and will also play cd's that have been lightly scratched on the surface which many other players have skipped on.
Further advantages are gained when you tried to fast forward through a cd using the >> buttons as it will go extremely fast which...

Good no-frills CD player
Review of Technics SL-PG 390 by
tcumming
Advantages: Good sound for the price, very reliable
Disadvantages: No remote control, only basic feature set
...This CD player was Technics' cheapest hifi seperate CD player back in 2000, when I bought it for £70, and I believe has now been replaced in the product line by the SL-PG3.
Both at the time and five years on, I have been very impressed by the overall quality of an unashamedly "budget" model. I am sure it does not sound as good as a £400 CD player, but nevertheless, to my ears it has a very well rounded sound, without the "wooliness" that sometimes characterises cheaper CD machines. It is also very well built - the drawer, controls and casing all feel very solid, and it has been perfectly reliable in the five years I have had it.
Where it loses out is on the range of features available. This machine is purely a traditional CD player - it will not play MP3 CDs or anything like that, nor will it play anything recorded on a CD-RW disc. CD...

Not wonderful
Review of PC Answers by
sjhoward
Advantages: Magazine contains relatively few adverts, and is printed on reasonably high quality paper
Disadvantages: The editorial is mediocre, and its far too expensive
...PC Answers is one of those computer magazines where they seem to spend half their time working on the CD Rom, and half their time on the magazine.
Whilst the magazine is OK, ComputerActive is a very similar type of mag but it goes much more in depth, and explains all the jargon too.
The £4.99 price tag may be low when compared to some computer magazines, but it is rather expensive when you actually get hold of the magazine and CD-Rom and see what you have got for your money: a 114 page magazine, and a CD-Rom containing mostly freeware and shareware which can be downloaded anyway.
What little editorial exists is mediocre, and is full of technical jargon.
For anyone thinking of buying this mag, I would point to ComputerActive as a cheaper, and better, alternative....

Variable vertible delight
Review of Technics SL-PG 490 by
rjs26
Advantages: Amazing sound, h/p socket, good remote, variable volume
Disadvantages: Colour, styling.
...I purchade the Technics after auditioning both the Kenwood 2010 and the Sony CDP XE 330.
All three of these are sub £100 CD players and are rated as such, compared to more expensive players can sound "electronic."
The CD player is excellent. The sound is very natural and suitable for all sorts of music. The 1 bit digital to analogue converter is a delight compared to some others, handiling all frequencies well.
There is an optical output for home recording fanatics. The inclusion of a headphone socket is a bonus from my point of view owning an Amp with no headphone socket or remote contoll.
This is what sets the player apart from the sony, both sounding better than the Kenwood. From the excellent, well equiped, well made remote control you can change the volume of the CD players output to the Amplifier.
The only drawbacks from my...

...using the remote control.
- Create normal audio CD's that can be played in a CD player.
- Create MP3 CD that can be played on MP3 CD players.or on some comaptible DVD players(most).
- Record directly on to the disk using a microphone
- Backup all your important Data and files
- Create Karoke CD's
- A few more feutures Available.
Technical notes:
Buffer under run prevention technology
auto writing speed adjustment technology

This is ideal to anyone that does alot of video recording as you can write your recorded video to a VCD (explained above).
Someone who listens to alot of music, your downloaded music can be written to a CD and played back.
Perhaps you just want to backup CD's?.
(using the tool available in nero)

Best in years
Review of Enemy Of The Music Business - Napalm Death by
rolfdrewett
Advantages: Brutal, fast and aggressive
Disadvantages: None
...This has to be the best Napalm Death album in years! Their first album on the Dreamcatcher label, it has a lot of the same intensity as a lot of their earlier albums. Lately Napalm Death has tried to get more technical with their music, especially the guitars and drums. But this album brings back the most brutal of Napalm Death. The music is in your face and extra fast. Barney Greenway is on top form on vocals. If you like your death metal with an extra dash of brutality then this one is for you. I was starting to think Napalm Death were losing it because I prefer brutal death metal over the more technical death metal (Carcass etc.), but this album is back to Napalm's roots, shredding guitars, blastbeats left, right and center and Barney's awesome growls. Well recommended. The CD has a wierd hidden track about 5 minutes after the last...
