...I watched 'not another teen movie' on Dvd last night for the first time (rented). I was never really interested in when it was released at the cinema because I'd been through that whole spoof thing back when scary movie was first released and I thought this would be the same old thing. Okay I wasn't totally wrong but it still has charm (maybe not the appropriate word). I was actually surprised that I enjoyed it and actually watched it three times because there were two commentaries on the dvd (one cast and one crew). ...While pondering what my next op could be on and having a look through the members picks in Ciao Café I knew that I didn’t really want to do it on a product, it’s Sunday after all and I certainly didn’t want any heavy writing duties, I needed something light hearted, something funny and to boost my (at the moment, low) morale, then I saw it…. Top 10 Teen Movies – there couldn’t have been a better subject matter if I tried to find one. ...My top 10 teen movie are:- 1) Not Another Teen Movie - I love this film, it makes me laugh my head off so much even though in some scenes it is meant ot be quite serious. - It is a rip off of "She's all that" but still it is funny. - At John Hughes High School, the students are the same as just about every other teenager in a teen movie. The popular jock, Jake (Chris Evans), takes a bet from Austin, the cocky blonde guy (Eric Christian Olsen), that he can transform Janey, the pretty ugly girl (Chyler Leigh), into the prom queen before the prom. But two people are trying to stop Jake from succeeding: his evil sister, Catherine, the cruelest girl in school (Mia Kirshner), and Priscilla, the bitchy cheerleader (Jaime Pressly). Advantages: It has some (SOME) funny jokes in there
Disadvantages: it has lots and lots of bad jokes in there

...! The genesis of teen movies is, to me at least, unknown. It should stay that way, for the fate of the fool who brought about the genre would be swift and merciless, otherwise. His dastardliness has spawned artistry of maleficent device, conceived and delivered with one purpose and one purpose only: to steal forth the hard-earned money of teens and assorted idjits wherever they may roam. The Evil That Has Birthed (plot) The basic premise of Not Another Teen Movie is quite simple: slag, parody and slander all the other teen movies which have come before it. There are so many obvious references to past teenybopper movies from bygone times that I can scarce remember them all. Advantages: Funny, witty, sarcastic, ironic - generally hilarious!
Disadvantages: Rather rude- and could be considered tasteless by some.

...We've seen what Scary Movie can do to the horror genre, 4 bloody times, but when director Joel Gallen took on spoofing the teen genre in Not Another Teen Movie nobody seemed to want to know about it. I found this film to have instant appeal, with actually being a fan of American Pie and of course, good looking cheerleaders. It's very rewatchable as well, although the last time I watched it the film did feel as 5 years dated as it actually is. For a main story we see the Popular Jock (Jake) trying to transform the Pretty Ugly Girl (Janey) into Prom Queen for a bet, whilst his ex-girlfriend the Nasty Cheerleader is going to the Prom with the Beautiful Weirdo. Advantages: You're at a disadvantage if you don't buy this album!
Disadvantages: None really, but I liked the swapping of vocals on 20 Below on the last album and there's none of that here.

...The Teen Idols were one of my biggest musical surprises last year. I had heard tracks on the Honest Dons comps and I had also heard the now pretty famous Ketchup Soup on the Fat Short Music For Short People but when I saw them live I was totally blown away. Teen Idols were hands down my best live band of last year. I went straight out and got both albums. The new album, Full Leather Jacket doesn’t disappoint. I have to admit that when I first heard it I thought it was very slow, but after a few listens you get into the new pace and just sit back, relax and enjoy!! All the melodies and catchy choruses are there and there’s even a guest appearance by Dan Vapid!! Rock n’ Roll!! A big thumbs up here!!... Read review

Advantages: Teen Wolf is a kitsch retro classic.
Disadvantages: Teen Wolf Too is a steaming pile.

...Teen Wolf (1985)**** Straight after Michael J Fox shot to fame in Back to the Future this quirky teen comedy came out the same year. I recall it being received well, at least I know I rented it. It's a lot harder to explain why though, because Teen Wolf is one of, if not the, most ridiculous movies ever. And I don't say that lightly having watched Santa travel to Mars and cavemen fly hang-gliders. The basic premise revolves around Scott Howard (Fox). He plays with the high school basketball team, who get routinely humiliated by every other team in the tournament. He's infatuated with the school beauty Pamela Wells (Lori Griffin), who won't even give him the time of day. He has a childhood friend, Susan, who he treats like a lad. ...Well I like teen movies. I think everyone knows that. Ever since my brother forced me to watch "The Breakfast Club" oh so many years ago I became addicted to the idea of movies about teen people. Especially American teen people. My friends think I'm a bit weird as I am such an 80's movie freak. I just don't think they make movies like they used to. Truth be told I was born in 1984 so I shouldn't really say things like "I don't think they make movies like they used to" but hey that's how I feel. I grew up watching the movies and got all my rentals free due to a relative owning a video rental store (heaven). I have been watching teen movies since I was really young and that isn't a joke.
