Canon EOS 450D - Superb!

Advantages: Extremely easy to use, fantastic picture quality, long battery life.
Disadvantages: I haven't found any!

CANON 450D

Advantages: TOO MANY TO MENTION
Disadvantages: NONE

...Excellent picture quality, especially regarding the colour reproduction. The 450d's ease of use enhances the overall quality of the product. User defined functions are simple to set and use. The software supplied with the camera provides brilliant and simple guidance and manipulation of photographs can be made easily, if required. This software also compares well with professional software, certainly for beginners to digital photography. The price, which has been dropping since its launch, has always meant good value. But of course, that value, at current prices, is second to none. An added advantage is that all of my old Canon lenses can also be used. Add a good flash gun and you will have all you need for great photography. The best camera I have ever owned....

Advantages: excellent picture quality. clear lcd screen. simple menu

...Canon have released an excellent performing camera. This camera is nearly as good as the more expensive eos 40D. The menu is incredibly easy to use even for a novice like me. The 3 inch lcd screen is very clear and simple to understand. The 12 million pixels creates beautiful pictures and gives you massive scope for enlarging and cropping and still create excellent clarity pictures after zooming in on PC. The ability to take raw pictures boosts massively the potential to create imaginative pictures using software such as adobe photo shop. I used to use a canon powershot but am very pleased to have swapped to this versatile camera. Prices for this camera are still dropping and I consider this far better value than new eos 1000D....

The Canon EOS 50D superb image quality.

Advantages: Superb image quality, well built, High resolution, low noise, Excellent spec.
Disadvantages: Only minor gripes, no CF card included, large and heavy compared to some.

Although as with most electronic products, the value will deteriorate over time and should be able to get a cheaper version next year. Advantages: Same Canon quality we have come to expect, great ISO capabilities.
Disadvantages: Buttons can get fiddly in the cold.

It's relatively compact; lightweight; comes with an adequate lens; has programmed settings for novices - like portrait and landscape modes; but also offers manual control of apertures, shutter speeds, white balance, ISO? so that the more experienced photographers can have fun and be a little more creative. One item to note if you are upgrading from a digital compact is that you have to use the viewfinder. The screen on the back of the camera only shows exposure information, and allows you to view photographs you have already taken. It does not let you view the scene you are about to photograph. A slightly less explosive Canon.

Advantages: Typically good Canon images.
Disadvantages: Poor flash and feels a bit flimsy.

The first thing noticeable with the new 1000D is that it is a bit lighter than both the earlier 400 and 450 offerings but it feels very similar in your hand and looks almost exactly the same. Remembering that this is supposed to be an entry level DSLR you would obviously expect it to have a bit less quality then the very expensive cameras on the market and you would be right, the biggest problem with it as a package buy is that it comes with the much maligned 18-55mm Canon kit lens which has been proven over a few years now not to be of very good standard. I was starting to get a bit confused with the whole point to this camera, it was not offering anything outstanding and although it was less expensive than other Canons it was still more expensive than the entry level DSLR...
