The Canary Island of La Palma offers a combination of interesting, varied walking in scenery that can be gently semi-rural or impressively rugged, from volcanic desert to jungly forest, without the over-touristification that affects Tenerife and Gran Canaria. The book contains 16 routes based on walking from, or catching buses from, the popular east coast resort of Los Cancajos - though the routes are also practical from nearby Santa Cruz. They would also be possible from Los Llanos, though usually with an extra 30-60 minute bus journey at either end of the day. The walk routes vary, from comfortable tours that are never more than 25 minutes away from a café, to energetic gorge crossings with considerable ascent and descent. There are NINE LARGE-SCALE MAPS within the text, showing Los Cancajos-San Antonio-Zumacal, Barlovento, Fuencaliente, Mazo, Puntallana, San Andrés, San José, San Pedro, and the southern end of Santa Cruz. ...Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands, the main resorts include Los Cristianos, Playa De Las Americasand Puerto De La Cruz. English is widely spoken so the language isn't a problem here. The currency is the Euro. There is no doubt about it, Tenerife is a beautiful country with amazing scenery year round good weather and plenty to see and do. Advantages: Clean, Quiet, Near Beach

...the more entertaining Playa de las Americas resort.
The hotel is only a 5 minute downhill walk to a large beach where the cost of 2 beds and a straw 'parasol' is 12 euros [2006 price]. There are literally dozens of places to eat out if you so desire.
We particularly enjoy the hotel because the main tourists are Scandinavian and the majority are there with children. This however is no problem as...

Apartment Complex in Tenerife
Advantages: Clean and spacious apartments.
Disadvantages: Too noisy and packed around the hotel area especially around the pool.
...Compostela Beach Resort was situated in between Playa d'las Americas and Los Cristianos, which is an area that is packed with plenty of places to eat and drink.
We stayed here for two weeks self catering in a two bedroom apartment. The apartment was brilliant, it was very spacious and clean. Food was good and well presented in the restaurant. The kids really loved it as there are loads...
