City and the Ghost

Advantages: The vocal range on display here is excellent, the guitar hooks sublime.
Disadvantages: If you don't like Fall Out Boy's vocal sound you probably won't like this.

...'Life on Life's Terms' is the second studio album from the New Jersey pop rock band that is Bedlight For Blue Eyes. Vocally the sound created by the band here is quite similar to that of Fall Out Boy's Patrick Stump, instrumentally there are guitar hooks a plenty, and the music of Bedlight For Blue Eyes always here is hugely melodic. This album contains twelve tracks and this therefore provides for 44 minutes of music; an album you'll either love or hate dependent upon your thoughts about radio friendly powerpop. Coming to terms

Advantages: A very strong sense of place and an interesting story, an ambitious novel
Disadvantages: Not all the author's ambitions are fulfilled

...happened, and holding on to the discoveries that she has come all the way to Japan to find out more about. I know other readers have criticised Mo Hayder for using material that they feel is too shocking for popular fiction/entertainment, and if you objected to her other novels on these grounds, I am sure you would find some of the subject matter here offensive too. Violence, brutality, torture and murder are graphically described. For me though, this novel demonstrates several of the reasons why I love crime fiction so much, not least the fact that the genre can take up so many different things and can explore the darkest human behaviour in so many varied ways. What stays in my memory as a reader (rather different from witnessing such events) is the process of coming to terms with the past that the main characters have to go through...

...bad boy - rude, aggressive, and with a blatant disregard for rules and regulations, we still manage to see the underlying issues that have perhaps led to this behaviour . He also has a lot of great lines, including most of the swearing! The film is enhanced by some classic 80's music - lots of synthesizers and drums! Waiting , by Elizabeth Daily is a great tune, as is 'Don't you forget about me' by simple minds . While the fashions in this movie may date, the points the film makes never will - it's a wonderful film about how we perceive others, and ourselves "in the simplest terms, in the most convenient definitions. " and I think that there's a moral in this film - to not be so quick to judge others based on social stereotypes, but to get to know someone before making judgement .
