Full of action, intrigue, and espionage, The Unit offers a dramatic, fictionalised look inside the military while also giving viewers a peek inside the private lives of the elite squad. Conceived by the critically acclaimed David Mamet (Glengarry Glen Ross, House of Games), The Unit is an elite, covert Special Forces team that operates outside the military chain of command. The first season's 13 episodes offer insight into the characters without revealing too much about the men who make up the operation. Are they extremely patriotic, or are they adrenalin junkies who have to be in danger to feel validated? The answer probably falls somewhere in between, and the viewer gets the feeling that as much as the men love their wives and children, it's their jobs that give them their true reason for living. Led by veteran Jonas Blane (Dennis Haysbert, 24), the Unit deals with terrorism, rescue missions, and assassinations quickly, discreetly, and efficiently. If all goes well, someone else gets the credit. If things go awry, it's their necks on the line. In the first season of The Unit, the action is fast, the plot is succinct, and the acting is well done (when dealing with the deadly missions). It's the secondary storyline involving the wives that's less successful. The newest member of the Unit, Bob Brown (Scott Foley, Felicity), apparently didn't fill his wife Kim (Audrey Marie Anderson) in on what their new life would be like. From the beginning, she resists the hoo rah attitude that the other wives exhibit. But rather than coming across as an independent free thinker, she is presented as a whining drip of a woman who has no clue about the definition of a secret. Of course, when faced with the military's version of The Stepford Wives, who could blame her? As Jonas' supportive wife Molly, Regina Taylor (I'll Fly Away, Courage Under Fire) is less sympathetic than usual. In the early episodes, she comes across as an almost stalkerish busybody who is always there when Kim is trying to cope with a life she never wanted. Throw in an affair between commanding officer Colonel Tom Ryan (Robert Patrick, Terminator 2: Judgment Day) and one of the wives and you've got the makings of a military soap opera. The show is at its best when it concentrates on the men and their missions. We may not understand why they do what they do, but we're grateful that someone is doing the dangerous job for us. --Jae-Ha Kim ... less

The Wachowski Brothers' The Matrix took the well-worn science fiction idea of virtual reality, added supercharged Hollywood gloss and a striking visual style...... more
The Wachowski Brothers' The Matrix took the well-worn science fiction idea of virtual reality, added supercharged Hollywood gloss and a striking visual style and stole The Phantom Menace's thunder as the must-see movie of the summer of 1999. Laced with Star Wars-like Eastern mysticism, and featuring thrilling martial arts action choreographed by Hong Kong action director Yuen Woo Ping (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), The Matrix restored Keanu Reeves to genre stardom following virtual reality dud Johnny Mnemonic (1995), and made a star of Carrie-Anne Moss, who followed this with the challenging perception twister Memento (2000). Helping the film stand out from rivals Dark City (1998) and The Thirteenth Floor (1999) was the introduction of the celebrated "bullet time" visual effects, though otherwise the war-against-the-machines story, hard-hitting style and kinetic set-pieces such as the corporate lobby shoot-out lean heavily on Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991). Elsewhere the influence of John Woo, from the ultra-cool near real-world SF of Face/Off (1997) to the raincoats and sunglasses look of bullet-ballet A Better Tomorrow, is clearly in evidence. The set-up isn't without its absurdities, though--quite why super-intelligent machines bother to use humans as batteries instead of something more docile like cows, for example, is never explained, nor is how they expect these living batteries to produce more energy than it takes to maintain them. The Matrix is nevertheless exhilarating high-octane entertainment, although as the first part of a trilogy it perhaps inevitably doesn't have a proper ending. On the DVD: the anamorphically enhanced 2.35: 1 image is virtually flawless, exhibiting only the grain present in the theatrical print, while the Dolby Digital 5. 1 sound is demonstration quality, showing off the high-impact sound effects and Don Davis' fine score to great effect. Special features are "data files" on the main stars, producer and director and "Follow the White Rabbit", which if selected while viewing the movie offers behind the scenes footage. This is interesting, but gimmicky, requires switching back from widescreen to 4:3 each time, and would be better if it could be accessed directly from one menu. There is also a standard 25-minute TV promo film which is as superficial as these things usually are. --Gary S Dalkin ... less

24 Hours in London is a crime thriller set in 2009 in which a neatly twisted story is undermined by bizarre shifts in style; yet it remains notable as Gary--2point 4 Children--Olsen's last screen work. Olsen plays a London ganglord seeking to erase his rivals while, as in The Long Good Friday (1980) before it, he completes a major deal. But when a witness, Martha (Anjela Lauren Smith), survives a massacre Olsen orders her hit before the police can close in. Thus the film delivers a set-piece assault on a police station in homage to The Terminator before relocating for a waiting game in a hotel room. Add a mystery police traitor and a sub-plot involving organ theft and the story develops with more than expected ingenuity. Unfortunately the tone veers so much it's like watching two different films: a dark thriller which doesn't have the budget to convince us that this is 2009, and a slapstick farce filled with OTT violence and cartoon caricatures better suited to TV's Bottom. Played either straight or for laughs the story could have worked, but switching between the two results in an almost unbelievable mess that proves first time directors need do more than simply parade their influences. --Gary S. Robocop 2: Series - Meltdown [DVD] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC]

RoboCop 2 isn't just the title of the first sequel to RoboCop but refers, in a plot prefiguring Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), to a second, more powerful cyborg introduced as an adversary to the tin-can man played to perfection by Peter Weller. Generally dismissed by most fans, here director Irvin Kershner does much the same job as he did with the first Star Wars sequel, The Empire Strikes Back (1980), which is to make a darker and in some ways more involving follow-up. Nancy Allen returns from the original as RoboCop's policewoman sidekick and Kershner sticks to the jet-black satire and ruthless comic-book morality of the original, making this a rarity for Hollywood: a multi-million-dollar franchise movie anti-capitalist assault on the "greed is good" mentality of the Regan era. There's even a hilariously prescient dig at the way the studio would eventually dumb the series down into family-friendly fodder, a process that began with the immediate sequel, RoboCop 3 (1993). Action is to the fore and among the spectacular set-pieces and furious carnage RoboCop 2 offers a last stand before digital effects took over for some excellent stop-motion animation for RoboCop's psychotic new foe. On the DVD: this is a perfunctory release with nothing in the way of extras bar the original trailer presented cropped to 4:3. Fortunately the 1.77: 1 picture on the main feature is excellent, with minimal grain, strong colours and plenty of detail. The sound, though four-channel Dolby Prologic rather than Dolby Digital, is likewise excellent, with every word clear and gunshots, explosions and pulsating score combining to full cacophonic blockbuster effect. The disc also contains dubbed versions in Italian, French and Spanish, as well as a vast selection of subtitles. --Gary S Dalkin ... less

Doctor Who: Spearhead from Space [DVD] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC]

"Spearhead from Space" launched Doctor Who into the 1970s with not only a new Doctor, Jon Pertwee, but a new assistant, the scientist Liz Shaw (Caroline John) and a regular place in the show for UNIT and Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart (Nicholas Courtney). It also marked the debut of the programme in colour and saw the Doctor stranded on Earth after Patrick Troughton's last adventure, "The War Games" (1969). Not only that, but it proved the only serial in the show's history to be entirely shot both on film and location, giving it a uniquely cinematic feel. Regenerating in a country hospital, the Doctor finds himself helping the Brigadier investigate an unusual meteorite and its links with a sinister doll factory. The Autons are cybernetic killers--anticipating The Terminator by some 15 years--and the sequence in which they break through high-street shop windows to slaughter pedestrians remains a chilling highpoint of Doctor Who's entire history. Things do turn silly with a subplot involving a waxworks museum, while the ultimate battle with the Nestine consciousness is more likely to induce laughter than fear, but as vintage television nostalgia this is fast-moving splendidly characterised entertainment. --Gary S. DalkinOn the DVD: The remastered picture and sound are exceptional for a 1970 TV show. Obviously in 4:3 and mono, this DVD offers technical quality easily as good as many feature films. There is a very friendly, if not especially informative, commentary from Nicholas Courtney and Caroline John, and subtitles that offer background facts and figures. With an amusing five-minute recruiting film for UNIT, repeat trailers and a gallery including previously unpublished photos, this excellent DVD is a Doctor Who fan's dream come true. --Gary S. Made to re-launch television's most famous time traveller, Doctor Who: The Movie is an expensive feature-length episode which attempts to continue the classic series and work as a stand-alone film. Transporting the remains of the Master, Sylvester McCoy's Seventh Doctor is diverted to San Francisco in 1999. Regenerating in the form of Paul McGann, the Doctor gains a new companion in heart surgeon Dr Grace Holloway (Daphne Ashbrook) and must stop the Master from destroying the world. All of which might have been fine, had not the most eccentrically British of programmes been almost entirely assimilated by the requirements of American network broadcasting. Matthew Jacobs' screenplay is literally nonsense, dependent on arbitrary, unexplained events while introducing numerous elements that contradict established Doctor Who mythology. The Tardis is re-imagined as a bizarre pre-Raphaelite/Gothic folly, while the Doctor, now half-human, becomes romantically involved with his lady companion. From the West Coast setting to metallic CGI morphing, from the look of Eric Roberts as the Master to a motorcycle/truck freeway chase, director Geoffrey Sax borrows freely from James Cameron's Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991). Doctor Who fans should feel relieved this travesty was not successful enough to lead to lead to a series, though McGann himself does have the potential to make a fine Doctor. This is the slightly more violent US TV edit, rather than the cut version previously released on video. On the DVD: There are two BBC trailers and a Fox promo "introducing the Doctor" to American audiences. The interview section features Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann, Eric Roberts, Daphne Ashbrook, director Geoffrey Sax and executive producer Philip Segal, twice. The main interviews are on-set promotional sound-bites. However, Segal's second interview was filmed in 2001 and finds him spending 10 minutes explaining why the programme turned out as it did, and coming very close to apologising for it. He also offers a two-minute tour of the new Tardis set. Alongside a gallery of 50 promotional stills is a four-minute compilation of behind-the-scenes "making of" footage. There are alternative versions of two scenes, though the "Puccini!" scene is so short as to be pointless. As usual with Doctor Who DVDs there are optional production subtitles and these offer a wealth of background information. Four songs used in the film are available as separate audio tracks, and John Debney's musical score can be listened to in isolation. Finally there is a commentary track by Geoffrey Sax, which contains some interesting material but does tend to state the obvious a lot. The sound is very strong stereo and the 4:3 picture is excellent with only the slightest grain. --Gary S Dalkin ... less

The Terminal Movie Review
Advantages: Light Hearted Fairytale, Great Actors.
Disadvantages: You've Got To Have A Decent Sweet Tooth To Enjoy This Movie.
...American movies made post 9/11 tend to have lost that uniquely American innocence - after all, who ever dreamed that international terrorism would rear its horrible head there? That was something that happened in faraway places. But in spite of being made well after 9/11, Terminal is still one of the most innocent and naive Hollywood movies ever made. It must be the combination of Steven...

Terminator returns
Advantages: Some cool scenes
Disadvantages: Overall too slow
...This is quite a strange one, as Terminator as back with a bang and its not the Terminator films we are used to. It is clear to see though that this is what tempted Christian Bale to take up the role of John Conner, as he wanted to push the story on and bring to screen what the original films suggested was coming.
This film is directed by McG who also has a major role in the hit shows...

Terminator 4 maybe hitting our screens soon!
Advantages: the new TX
Disadvantages: plot could have been much better
...other Terminator fans out there, I was expecting a lot more from it. But I did like the way it left you for more, in which we might actually see the war against the machines actually happen.
RUMOURS CIRCULATING FOR TERMINATOR 4.....................
As I said at the beginning of this review, there has been a lot of hype in magazines and on the internet of a fourth instalment.
Without trying to...
